I thought some of the jokes were forced too, Susan. But I'm the reverse on enjoying the first half and not so much on the 2nd half. Too many holes and rushed sections to really get a sense that this was a well flushed out book.

Also, do we all want to read the next book in the series together and if so, when would be a good time?
I'd be up for doing it together again. I enjoy buddy reads. Even when the book is one I would have stopped reading (thinking back to The Lord of the Vampires lol). I'd vote for some time in January.
Sounds good to me too, count me in for the group read. I agree the ending had a big hole I am hoping the next book answers those questions.

Just as a comment on this book: Whatever I was expecting, Reyes being the Son of Satan was definitely not it. I felt so disappointed by that, because I'd quite liked, found it refreshing, that this book handled the concept of death without bringing heaven/hell into it. I noticed from the synopsis, that there'll be demons in the second book, and am wondering if it's only a matter of time before angels are mentioned. Am I the only one that feels like this started off with a fresh new premise that now seems to be turning into a clichéd paranormal/UF? Having said all that, the humour alone made it a four star book. I'm just having a vent here where I don't have to be worried about revealing spoilers.
And yet you still rated it 4 stars as well Midu? Says a lot about how much we liked the writing style despite that, no? Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way!
Humor's the reason I liked Kate Daniels series. I keep recommending it to others while friends who have already read aren't too crazy about the books.
If you wind up reading the first in the series, CaroB, let me know. I started reading that book, but put it down. Maybe a BR (Buddy Read) will get me more involved.
I agree with both of you CaroB and Midu. I loved the front end of this book, but not so much in the back. I was looking forward to Reyes being something odd, but like CaroB, was disappointed with the Son of Satan angle. The ending felt flat, dragged out (aka not well written).Am I the only one that hates it when an author leaves a book in limbo as this one?
The problem I had with this book is
because
the first two-thirds of the book was so great! Then the ending didn't live up to it. Did the author run out of gas, do a "hurry-up" ending to meet a deadline, or is she saving her next best for the next book? Whatever the reason, I'm willing to give her another chance. I just wish she hadn't blown it for me - I was ready to give her five stars.
EXACTLY Lisa! Humour is my thing. A book/author that can make me laugh out loud with the sassiness or antics of it's characters (Shelly Laurenston comes to mind) or just amuse me with the wit in the writing (Gail Carriger), is priceless to me. I'm willing to overlook a lot for that. I felt like this was a 5 star book, but she blew it... rather than saying the author wrote a great 4 star book. In a way, this makes me think of
by Ellen Connor in that it's completely the opposite. For that book, even though I only gave it 3 stars, I walked away really happy with the read, with the story and the plot. Here I've walked away disappointed, even though I've rated it higher... Lol, poor authors. It must be such a fine line they tread.
Especially when they have a moody reader like me. ☺ But didn't you feel it ended on a bit of a down note, what with (view spoiler)
Lisa Kay wrote: "Especially when they have a moody reader like me. ☺ But didn't you feel it ended on a bit of a down note, what with [spoilers removed]"I was scratching my head over that. What purpose did it have plotwise? And I too was surprised by the Son of Satan thing. I thought that Charley was more "ghost whisperer" than my concept of reaper. Then I thought that the author would set up "grim reaping" as a team job. I thought Reyes would be the other half of the team. If Charley could sense if people were guilty or inocent then it would made sense that Reyes could too. So I thought that Reyes was "Death" something along the lines of "Ghost Rider".
Exactly! Good question, Gisela! What purpose did it have plot wise? I was also thinking the author was going to set Reyes and Charley up as a duo. Still don't know where to put him in my swoonworthy catalog... but maybe that is the point.
Gisela, I thought that too! Reyes as Death and Charley as the portal to whatever afterlife they've got coming. Especially with the hooded robe thing.
Setting them as a duo or as two parts of a whole(soulmates if you will) would have explained Charley's reaction to Reyes and his ability to invade her dreams. I would have liked to see her invade his. I also felt that after two thirds of the book the author decided to turn it into a series and started dragging, rushing and leaving plot holes and threads hanging. I gave the book 4 stars but would have given 5 if the ending had been better written.
Another good observation, Gisela! I think you might be on to something about her decision to turn it into a series (and when!). Makes me wonder if it was originally a stand-alone.
