Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments I read a bit more before I had a nap this afternoon. Wanted to stay awake, but my eyes were closing (damn you eyes for not staying open!). What a cliffhanger (already) and only at the end of chapter 1! (Not much of a spoiler since it's only chapter 1, but I was gobsmacked when I learned who he thought The Bleeding Man might be).

So excited to be reading this ;-)

message 103: by Aunty Janet (new)

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments I abandoned this book at around 37% because I really wasn't enjoying it. I'm sure it is very well written, but was just too dark for me, it was giving me nightmares! Sorry!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Good job we don't all like the same thing Janet - or some of us would get killed in the rush for Book 3!

Edit to add, yes, that is a pathetically thinly veiled hint Cornelius!

message 105: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I did persevere to the end but I found the book to be too dark for my taste and the florid (thanks for that descriptive word, Darren) prose to be cumbersome. I found myself to be skimming through and skipping whole pages. Instead of being pulled into the story, I found I was being pushed out by the language.
As you say, Ignite, we all have different tastes. I was expecting to love the book, and was engaged at a couple of points but overall, it's not a style of writing that suits me personally.

message 106: by Aunty Janet (new)

Aunty Janet (janetauty) | 296 comments Completely agree Ignite and Patti!

message 107: by Kath (last edited Nov 11, 2011 04:01AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Now you see, the language pulls me in but so does the story. I've nearly finished it again and I'm still noticing bits of lovely prose where I was too engaged in the story before. It's not an easy book but I feel it repays the work you put into it so many times over.

Edit to add, I didn't expect everyone to like it - I'm just happy that some people did!

message 108: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I loved it :o) I'm beginning to think i have a bit of a twisted side to me, what with all the dead people and bones obsession and enjoying darkly grotesque books. I'm really a nice person though

message 109: by Kath (last edited Nov 11, 2011 04:19AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments We are nice people because we let our dark side out Jud! (What would we be like if we repressed it?)

message 110: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments that's not something I care to think about Ignite

*shudders*

but maybe you're right, better to let it out in small doses and control it.

message 111: by Cornelius (new)

Cornelius Harker | 830 comments I'm back. I've just used a bottle of Lynx 'Dark Temptation' shower gel, so I'm feeling quite menacing at the moment. Firstly, thank you very much for the Amazon review, Jud (there was room for you in the suitcase, by the way, I left my coffin behind). I was really pleased with that, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. It appears as though the majority are ok with the novel, and it always pleases me to know that I'm not alone in the shadows. Also, Jud, Lynda and Mo Brown, thank you for the Goodreads reviews. I'm always very appreciative, since there are many out there who will look to the reviews first before deciding upon whether or not to make a purchase.

Patti and Aunty Janet, I'm sorry you didn't take to it. I hope I didn't give Aunty Janet too many nightmares. I had a dream only recently where a man had a giant TV for a head. The TV itself, however, was showing a cookery program (something to do with eggs), so it really took the shine off something that could've been quite darkly surreal. As for Patti skipping through a few pages here and there, I did that with 'War and Peace' during those lengthy chapters detailing the war itself, which I didn't think added much to the story. I'm glad you reached the end though, Patti, even if it wasn't your type of thing. I'm more than aware that I'm sitting in a niche market; sometimes I feel as though I'm writing from the confines of an aperture that's been inched into the side of a cliff by an indignant century-long storm, while overhead on the surface every other indie author is enjoying the resplendent sunshine. I'm happy to be here, however, since I do love an echo. Sometimes I like to growl like an angry monster, since the acoustics here are fantastic.

Overall (it's ok, I'm going now) I'm really pleased with the way the book has been received so far, and I'm very happy indeed that many of you have enjoyed reading it. I shall now take my leave before I outstay my welcome and take up too much room in this thread. I'm off now to kick small stones off the edge of my little aperture; it really annoys the people below.

Cornelius

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Welcome back Cornelius. I hope you'll join in a bit now that you're home. Certainly, when we get the Discussion thread there will be room for questions which I hope you will answer (and not merely lob over your cliff edge!)
Hope the holidays were relaxing and you didn't have to keep the Wanderer in order too much.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Finally started this last night.12% in. I am really enjoying it. Great writing style.

message 114: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I find it grows on you too Simon. After a bit of Cornelius, many writers seem very bland. It's like getting habituated to chillies! So glad you like it.

message 115: by Audrey (Seaholly) (new)

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments It certainly does make some other books pale into insignificance. Took me a while to decide what to read next. I am saving book 2 for the christmas hols ;)

message 116: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm agitating for Book 3 Audrey but I think I'm wasting my time before early next year!

message 117: by Audrey (Seaholly) (new)

Audrey (Seaholly) | 219 comments Thats why I am prolonging the start of book 2 Ignite. Its the anticipation.

I shall of course make myself available for questioning and all manner of interrogation using bright lights and electrodes. Don't worry, though, I know my place; I have no intention of butting into conversations unnecessarily. I shall speak only when spoken to.

message 119: by Kath (last edited Nov 14, 2011 08:05AM) (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm sure the questions will come when we get the spoilers and discussions thread. The only one I have is one I know you can't answer (and you are no doubt sick of being asked!)
Book 3. When?

Edit - no electrodes. Promise. (Unless you cancel Book 3 and decide to write chick-lit.)

message 120: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments As tomorrow is the 15th, we need to remember to hassle Simon to put the discussion threads up.

Ah, soon, very soon. I'd say early next year. In its current unedited form, Book Three is just over 295,000 words; it's a monster, but anyone who is familiar with the first two books in the saga will know just how important Sirrenvaag is to the narrative.

Edit: I may include a little chick-lit for Book Four. The Wanderer falls in love and spends his time skipping through meadows.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments ..picking up lots of forget-me-nots?

Pass the sick bucket Patti!

message 123: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Nope. Get your own. This one is in use.

message 124: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Hmm. Does that count as feedback Cornelius?

message 125: by Cornelius (new)

Cornelius Harker | 830 comments I believe it counts more as upchuck, Kath.

message 126: by Maureen (Mews) (new)

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments I must hurry up and try to finish quickly. I am at 80% and still loving it, but the reviews section with spoilers has been taunting me all day with the little red new posts count going up and I am desperate to jump in and read them all! ;-)

message 127: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Be patient and read faster Maureen!
