I am currently reading The Darkest Evening of the Year but I don't think I share your high praise for the book :-) so far it is a lot of dog worship.

Jim C (avsfaninboston) | 161 comments I have a question which is off topic but I had no idea where to ask this. Every year for the past "x" number of years, Dean Koontz would release a book in early December which my mother would buy for me as a Christmas present. It was the one present I looked forward to. I noticed that the publishing dates kepot getting later and later until 77 Shadow Street was released after Dec 25 last year. Not by much so it still was a present for me. This year nothing and he will not have a release for a couple of months. Anyone know why this has happened or has Dean Koontz slowed down that he is just doing one book a year? Thanks for any info.

Dean is releasing Odd Interlude in one volume on December 28th I believe. Odd Interlude was published as 3 e-books earlier this year before Odd Apocalypse was released. Typically we get 2-3 new books out of Dean in a year and others released in new formats.

I'm just guessing at the choice of release dates but I think publishers might decide to release after Christmas to take advantage of shoppers that received Gift Cards. I don't have any other explanation why they wouldn't release before Christmas, but maybe someone else does :-)

Gift cards after Xmas never entered my mind. I always assumed it would be before so they can be given as presents.

Karen B wrote: "And you begin to look for the word susurrant to appear in every Koontz book you pick up."

Is susurrant even a word? My comment box shows it underlined in red as misspelled. I haven't noticed the word before. What does that word even mean?

message 240: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Yep susurrant is an adjective used by Koontz in almost every book I have read in the past 5 months. It's such an odd word that I have started making a game of looking for it and sure enough I find it in the book I am reading.
Actually it may be susurration that he uses sometime.
Kindle dictionary shows the noun form as meaning whispering, murmuring or rustling.

With my Kindle I have made a sort of game out of looking up the odd looking words that Koontz uses even though I can get the meaning from context. I have caught him using a few archaic words even. He loves his language.

In Shadowfires there's a line about the susurrant sound of cold air coming through the wall vents.

And later in the book he writes about pausing to listen before the patter and susurration of the rain was cut out be a frightening noise.

I know it's in Moonlit Mind as well and in several other monthly reads we've read recently. The next time I find an archaic word I will let you know *LOL*

Maybe you are reading different versions of text than the rest of us. Maybe Koontz has manipulated your mind to see things the rest of us can not. Maybe this is some sort of government conspiracy or the work of extraterrestrials. Maybe I have been reading too much Dean Koontz lately.

message 242: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Dustin, if anyone gets really curious ... like anyone cares... I can give you page numbers and I can find it in the other books too! one of the little niceties of having a Kindle. Really it is great for someone like me or forgets what I read earlier. If I know a character was introduced, but isn't mentioned until much later and I want to remember what was said when the character first entered the book I can do a quick search of the name and it shows up ... page number and context.

Give me one example of the word usage with reference and I'll look it up if I have the book. If I don't have that particular book then you'll have to give me another example :-)

message 244: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Do you have Shadowfires? Try page 17. (the pages actually may be different) "But for the susurrant sound of cold air coming through the wall vent and the occasional single ring the telephone made before the machine answered it, the house was as silent as Paul Attison's glome-shrouded office."

Yes. What Chapter?

message 246: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 884 comments Susurration is in Odd Hours I have to double check the page number in the hard back book. My books are all large print. But Kindle show it on p. 80, p.208 and p.209

What is listed as p.80 in Kindle is p.102 in my hardback copy so try those two pages in the book. I'm sorry because of the fact that I have only large print books in the hard backs I have.

From ODD HOURS, Chapter 12:

No night birds sang. No dogs barked. No whiff of breeze, no roosting owl
(Ooh, I like that part), no stalking cat rustled the leaves of any tree. I had gone too far inland to hear the susurration of the sea.

Interesting that goodreads gives the word susurration red underline in the comment box :-) but then again so does the word goodreads so go figure.
