Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) | 210 comments I can read and listen to music while I read, but I only do it sometimes.

message 52: by Claire (new)

Claire (proud-mum) | 3949 comments I can read in almost any situation from TV blaring to long car journeys. I do, however, hate to be interrupted by anyone espec in the middle of a good chapter!

message 53: by Diane (last edited May 30, 2009 02:40PM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) I can listen to "Smooth" jazz, real jazz, or classical while reading. Nothing with lyrics, else I get distracted and may start singing along.

message 54: by Sherry (new)

Sherry (sherylmarasi) | 93 comments Absolutely NO music! That would distract me!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I don't usually listen to music while reading - I like both greatly, but don't want to divide my attention that way. I kind of feel it disrespects both!

message 56: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments I usually listen to classical. I can't listen to anything with words as I start singing in my mind and lose track of the story, but I can watch a movie and read, go figure.

message 57: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Ellis | 176 comments Whilst I read I listen to the music of the Spirit within me, and tune out the earthly sounds, and some days, like today, I wonder why words like "Whilst" are not used more often as "Whilst" has such a poetic lilt to its pronounciation.
Sharon

˚•—S—•˚ (mille460) I love the playlist that Stephenie Meyer has put on her website, it is the music she listen to, and it is very suiting to the Twilight books!

Otherwise, I tend to listen to music that does not require any thinking, and that silence everything else, but that does not consume everything when i read.

message 59: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I listen to nothing!

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

mostly classical! camille saint-saens is my favourite.

message 61: by Steph (new)

Steph | 8 comments I love listening to music and reading, but I can't do both at the same time.

message 62: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) My musical preference is classic rock which is generally not very compatible with reading so I prefer reading in silence. I have been known to read while "watching" a baseball game on tv with the sound muted.

message 63: by Mir (new)

Mir Classical. Lyrics distract me.

message 64: by Bedtime Booknerd (new)

Bedtime Booknerd (shawtygurl15) I actually can't listen to music while reading I end up singing along...hahaha...but I can read & have the tv in the background can't read in silence either it makes me sleepy...

message 65: by [deleted user] (new)

I constantly soundtrack books that I read. In fact, when I was 11 reading H.P. & the Goblet of Fire, I had a copy where I wrote down all the songs and where they corresponded to the different parts of the book!

If I'm reading H.P. & the Prisoner of Azkaban, the part where they are in the Shack with Sirius, I HAVE to listen to the instrumental version of 'Oops I did it again'.

message 66: by O2 (new)

O2 I like anything soft through headphones when I'm reading. I don't like the radio or music through speakers though, has to be headphones.

message 67: by Eva (new)

Eva Fiona wrote: "I would rather read in silence or a noisy crowd, but when someone has their TV blaring or some annoying ass has their MP3 player on full blast I will read to music.

I like to read in silence. Music would distract me, though the composers and pieces you name sound delightful. I guess I'd like to give them my full attention...and same for the book. I never "multi-task" either.

message 68: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments I love to put some Coltrane or Miles Davis on and lie on the sofa reading a good book!

message 69: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 220 comments I prefer to read in silence. I can read to classical music but nothing with words. The second someone starts talking I get distracted.

message 70: by Kevis (last edited Jul 26, 2009 12:59AM) (new)

Kevis Hendrickson (kevishendrickson) If I'm reading I prefer to have no noise around me. But if I'm writing, I feel like I'm the dude in Iron Eagle who has to listen to some loud, violent music before getting ready for battle. In that case, I'm probably either listening to Wagner or Slayer.

message 71: by Tatum (new)

Tatum M (tatummcconnell) i listen to blonde by coeur de pirate a lot because i don't speak enough french to understand it in music

message 72: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (cosytomelibrary) I'm listening to music 24/7 music (and reading) is my life, so whenever I read there will be music in the background. Sometimes it's classical sometimes it's the official charts etc.

The one thing I can't stand is being in the living room and reading because the tv is such a distraction, I'll constantly be watching the screen instead of the book (not a problem I get with music).

message 73: by Sara (new)

Sara Shaw | 61 comments I listen to slow, sad songs.

message 74: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Rogers | 6 comments Anything really. The music is secondary when I'm really lost in a good read.

message 75: by Marybeth (new)

Marybeth (narutofan14) i sometimes listen to my ipod while i read which has all my rock msuic from linkin park and imagine dragons to bridget medler. then again sometimes i dont listen to music at all.

message 76: by E.B. (new)

E.B. Brown (ebbrown) | 6 comments I'm jealous of those of you who can read to music. I've tried it and simply can not focus.

Now, I do listen to music that gets me in the mood to read. I especially like soundtracks to historical movies and some classical stuff, it makes me want to delve into something dramatic.

message 77: by Book Concierge (last edited Nov 06, 2013 05:06AM) (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) I usually prefer quiet when I'm reading, but if I listen to music it's usually classical.

E.B. wrote: "I specially like soundtracks to historical movies ..."
Totally agree ... Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves are both great soundtracks for getting in the mood for a dramatic (or romantic) read.

message 78: by Xian Xian (new)

Xian Xian (xianxian) I usually listen to movie soundtracks or ambient music when i read. Joe Hisaishi and Ryuichi Sakamoto are one of my favorite composers. Sakamoto does a lot collaborations that consist of ambient music, his most well known ambient works are done with Alva Noto.

message 79: by Rachel Marie (new)

Rachel Marie (floodingaugust) | 21 comments I need silence to read. Otherwise I get distracted!!

message 80: by tiff (new)

tiff (tifflabs) When I am reading on the bus I must listen to classical- I get distracted when listening to anything else. I tend to daydream and listen to music and the bus, think, and since I am trying to read 100 books for the GR challenge I need to fit it in whenever I can. My commutes are very long so I read. When at home I have silence or Songza's playlist "Jazz for Reading".

message 81: by Sean (new)

Sean Thompson (stchrisjr) | 11 comments I don't listen to music when reading, but if I did, I'd strongly consider Nujabes. Check out his music on youtube.

message 82: by VickiLee (new)

VickiLee I must have silence when I read at home. I noticed some other folks said they couldn't read in a public place with noise surrounding them. Oddly enough, I can totally blot out the everyday jangle of life when I am reading in a public spot. Weird.

message 83: by C.T. (new)

C.T. Tunnell (CTTunnell) | 24 comments There are a few factors that go into this for me. If I'm in the mood for the book I'm reading, it doesn't matter what's going on the background. But if I'm not in the right mood, I'll get distracted easily. I can get in the mood if I push myself and make good progress in the story. This doesn't always have anything to do with the book itself, but sometimes that can be a factor, too.

But generally, If I'm reading then I'm not doing anything else.

message 84: by Ash (new)

Ash (morethanfairytales) | 63 comments If I'm reading a more technical book, I need silence to concentrate. Otherwise, my go-to is the overture from the Barber of Seville -- I'll just keep it on repeat while I read.

message 85: by Robert (new)

Robert Davis (robert_davis) | 2977 comments I can't listen to music or have the radio or tv on. Extraneous noise is too distracting.

message 86: by Erin (new)

Erin | 1 comments I like movie sound tracks like hunger games and twilight also red songs they have quite and loud songs

message 87: by Kris V (new)

Kris V (kristinarabbit) | 0 comments MAX RICHTER!

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

I enjoy reading while listening to Classical Music or Choral Concerts. I can still be engrossed in my book while these tunes play. Songs I actually know the words to distract me, as I can't help but sing along!

message 89: by Noorilhuda (new)

Noorilhuda Noorilhuda | 31 comments Bach, Beethoven, opera.

message 90: by Jodie (new)

Jodie | 10 comments I play music a lot even while I am reading, I tune in and out of the book and the music alternatively. The type I usually play is alternative and 90's grunge I could probably read in the middle of a mosh pit. I have no problem reading without music as well though.

message 91: by Stosch (new)

Stosch soma fm is good, relaxin not very beat driven. ambient type tunes. they got a selection of channels.

message 92: by Edin (new)

Edin Dedovic | 1 comments I guess it's all down to personal preference, but it looks like I might be in the minority in this group but I've never been able to read without having music playing in the background. Maybe this is because I find it difficult to concentrate otherwise, but it was a big help when I was studying. I felt like I had my own theme music playing while I immersed myself in a story.

More recently I have started to look for songs that fit in with the mood of a book, usually instrumentals or trailer music but not always. This all started after reading the Hunger Games trilogy to nothing but the Woodkid album. I found that every time I heard a song from the album I would immediately think of the Hunger Games, reminding me of how I felt during the book and bringing those emotions flooding back.

Sometimes it takes a while to find a book that fits perfectly with a song. In the event that I don't then I will revert back to some Ludovico Einaudi, but when you find the pairing that just fits I think it adds to the experience of the book as a whole. Reading the Goldfinch to the Interstellar trailer music by Hans Zimmer has got to be my favourite combination and even now when I hear that song I think back to how much I enjoyed reading the book.

message 93: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren | 293 comments I'm with the group who can read with the TV but not with music. When TV is on, I can sew, play video games, just about anything, but I get distracted with music and start singing.

message 94: by Scott (new)

Scott Ritchie Hard to read with the TV On I find but here's what i listen to when reading.

The Cure
Pink Floyd
Moby
Massive Attack
Mike Oldfield
Sigr Ros
Fun Lovin Criminals
Nina Simone

Stuff like that...

message 95: by Christy (new)

Christy Blow | 3 comments I do not listen while I read but I do when I write. If I am writing a love scene I listen to Pandora Peter Cetera station, and if it is an exciting scene I listen to Foo fighters or Pearl Jam station

message 96: by UlyssePirot (new)

UlyssePirot | 1 comments I recently stumbled upon a playlist meant to be for relaxing, but I tried it while reading and I found it really amazing!

https://open.spotify.com/user/pentato...

The Night Owl's Nook (thenightowlsnook) I don't usually listen to anything, I find it distracting but do like to like to listen to some form of instrumental jazz when I do. I find it relaxing.

message 98: by Imogen (new)

Imogen Reeves (purplegems3) | 2 comments I listen to AMSR as it gives me the peace and quiet when my family are watching Spongebob or Adventure Time too loudly or listening to Fetty Wap or Descendants 2 on full blast on a docking station. I usually listen to Harry Potter ASMR because I love Harry Potter (a lot). The ones I listen to the most is My Common Room (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIOc_...) as I'm usually in my bedroom when I want to read.

message 99: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) While I may read while watching television I never listen to anything. I find it very distracting and even when I'm in the car driving, I listen to a book on tape. I also do this while I walk.

message 100: by Isha (new)

Isha Cooper (ladyisha) I can't listening to music with vocals when I'm reading, it has to be instrumental. What I do is go on spotify and search the genre of the book... say the genre is "suspense" I search a suspense playlist and make sure that it's instrumental... really helps with the mood!
