Barbara No - you are not the only person who thinks this book is overrated.
I thought it was poorly written and thought the author took advantage of the women upon who she based the story.

I completely agree!

Vonda I'm going to have to agree. The book to me was "okay"...just "okay". I won't say that I didn't enjoy reading it, but I will say that I think it was played up more than it lived up to. The theme in the story is definitely not one that is original. The idea of racism, sexism, and the general unfairness of life has been written about from several different perspectives and contexts. This book was readable, but I wouldn't put it in my top ten books.

The movie was also overrated in my opinion. Again, it was "okay" - just "okay".

Anne I didn't really enjoy this book at all. The characters seemed to me to be a 'generalisation' not convincing really.

Rhonda Louise "I was waiting for something monumental to happen. But it never came."

That's exactly how I felt - despite the build up nothing really bad actually happened to any of the main characters - its like the author liked them too much to hurt them. Liked it, didn't love it.

Julia Nace I can see how it would be life changing for some people, but I guess it really depends on the person and your own experiences when it comes to any book out there. I personally thought it was amazing, maybe not life changing, but I admit I cried both times and really did think about some things afterward.
It all depends on the person

I liked the book, but I agree that it is over-rated

message 158: by Shelly (new) - rated it 2 stars

Shelly I thought it was disappointing. I had everyone in the office that said "Oh My God, this is the best book, you have to read it" I read it and kept going... OK... so what is the so great about it ??
It was a fair at best book.... nothing I'd want to read again in the future but it was very over-rated and disappointing for me. But we all have our own opinions on what we like.

Amanda I agree 100%

Kate Snow Definitely doesn't live up to the hype. Only 2 stars from me and I actually didn't bother to finish it.
