Jeannette, I hope Santa is very good to you this year.
There are two versions available, Touch with wi-fi, and Touch 3G. To the tune of a $50 price difference.

Thanks, Jeannette. I'd need 3G. I don't even have wifi at home and when out am usually reading in places that don't have wifi. I think they're too pricey for me. If I got to travel a lot, I'm sure I'd get one.
ETA: It's not the price of the Kindle, but the price of the books. Nearly 99% of my books are now library books.
I have wi-fi at home, and hopefully my library will get Kindle format soon. I'll load the thing up before I travel, so I don't need 3G.
I have quite a few Kindle books on my iMac, but it's not fun reading at my desk. And, I am also considering getting Kindle versions of my daughter's textbooks. They are half the price, and she can carry all of them on the Kindle. (I'm talking myself into this.)
@Rosie: I think the Nook is comparable in price, but the iPad is expensive.

I had a chance to read through the article carefully. I appreciated that both the good and bad points were mentioned. It summarizes at the end that if you are going to use this for reading perhaps the most advanced touch function isn't that necessary. I will keep my Kindle 3 at this point. I know it is out of date, but even this model allows audios from Audible. If I had no Kindle I would probably buy one with the touch facility. However let me mention that the 3G is extremely nice to have!

I had the same trouble with Daisy books, which I was told of at the meeting.
