Goodreads Description
When tragedy strikes Michele Windsor’s world, she is forced to uproot her life and move across the country to New York City, to live with the wealthy, aristocratic grandparents she’s never met. In their old Fifth Avenue mansion filled with a century’s worth of family secrets, Michele discovers a diary that hurtles her back in time to the year 1910. There, in the midst of the glamorous Gilded Age, Michele meets the young man with striking blue eyes who has haunted her dreams all her life – a man she always wished was real, but never imagined could actually exist. And she finds herself falling for him, into an otherworldly, time-crossed romance.

Michele is soon leading a double life, struggling to balance her contemporary high school world with her escapes into the past. But when she stumbles upon a terrible discovery, she is propelled on a race through history to save the boy she loves – a quest that will determine the fate of both of their lives.

Discussion Questions

Chapters 1 - 3
1) I thought the book started out nice. The dream intrigued me. I was wondering if the book was going to go a little 'Alice in Wonderland' on us, but now I'm not so sure. Anyone else's thoughts about who the guy in the mirror is and how the two will meet? I'm assuming they will meet.
2) What did you think of Michele's mom description of her dad? Is there something off about it or do you think that's just her mom's fanciful remembering of him?
3) First impressions of the Grandparents? Do you like them or not?
4) First thoughts of the mansion and Michele's room? Would you like to live there?
5) We now know the key in Michele's dream is the same one her father gave her mom. What do you think happened to Michele's dad? Do you think he left because of Marion's parents? Do you think something else happened? I wonder if she has a picture of what he looks like?
6) Do you feel what Marion told Michele was a bit of foreshadowing of what would happen or do you think it was just sound advice? "Listen to me, Michele. There is nothing in this life that can ever destroy you but yourself. Bad things happen to everyone, but when they do, you can't just fall apart and die. You have to fight back. If you don't, you're the one who loses in the end. But if you do keep going and fight back, you win. Just like I won with you."

Chapters 4-6
7) I know we haven't heard much about him, but do you think that Michele's dad is dead?
8) Michele has a lot of deja vu going on. Could we be dealing with some kind of reincarnation here?
9) There are some eerie similarities between Clara and Michele: both are orphans, both were taken in by Windsors (though Michele is technically a Windsor herself, but you get the picture), and they both meet up on the same days (albiet different year). Do you think that this is could be the same thing that happened in Juliet where history kept repeating itself time after time? Or is it something else entirely?
10) Any ideas/theories on why Mr. Windsor would adopt Clara when he already has biological kids? Do you think that he is genuinely a kind man looking to adopt an orphan (*scoffs* yeah right!) or does he have ulterior motives?
11) “We’re the only students here from families of the New York Four Hundred. Our mission is to take over where Mrs. Astor left off and rule the next generation of society with elegance, and defend against the antics of the nouveau riche—who just make us look bad.” Bleh! Who are these girls??

Chapters 7 - 10
12) Why can only certain people see Michele and others can't?
13) I wish we knew more about the key and how it works and where Michele's dad got it from.
14) Were you surprised that Cassie was okay with being Michele's alibi? Were you surprised she seemed open to possibility that what Michele was telling her was true?
15) Thoughts about the coat traveling through time?
16) Thoughts on the Fakin' Jamaicans?
17) So now we know why Clara was adopted into the Windsor family. Do you think Clara would have found out if Michele wasn't there? Did her presence alter the situation in any way? Did someone need to know in the future that Clara was a true blood relative? I just can't help feeling like there must be some reason Clara can see her. Could this be why or do you think there is another explanation?
18) What did you think of Ben Archer? Should Michele hold out for finding a way to be with Phillip or should she move ahead in her real time?
19) How do you think the field trip will affect Michele's time traveling?

Chapters 11-13
20) His uncle is here for the money, that I can buy. But the way Philip's mother is reacting over the engagement.. What do you think?
21) Thoughts on Einstein and his theory. Seemed like the author just tied the problem of time-travel into a neat bundle with it. Promising that Caissie could use the key. Wise?
22) Hmmm..Phillip called her and it worked. How?
23) Did you connect the lawyer in the past with Michele's father before the revelation? Also, Michele isn't showing enough interest in finding out the connection.
24) Michele realized that when Phillip was mentioned by the guide, this was the first time anyone mentioned him in the present. Why didn't she think that her grandparents had denied any knowledge about Phillip?
25) "In the year 1927, at the age of thirty-five, Philip Walker was declared dead." Why say "declared" dead? Could it be that he had managed to time travel and he left his body behind?
26) Do you think Michele'd be able to keep her promise and not see Phillip again?
27) Dorothy thawing and trying to comfort Michele. That was a great scene.

Chapters 14-16
28) So, what DID happen to Phillip? Why didn't he show up on Google?
29) Lily scoffed. “It’s only my favorite of Shakespeare’s plays. Yet another example slang used today. Sleepover?
30) Was it fair of Michele to risk taking Lily to the Club just so she could draw out Phillip?
31) I hope they're doing the right thing in trusting Wolfe. He seems like a lech to me.
32) Interesting, her father can see her? Why?
33) Michele must have known how Lily's parents would react to her singing on the stage. Yet, she convinced Lily to go. Selfish much?
34) If they wanted to keep their reputation intact, shouldn't Lily's parents have waited instead of creating such a big scene?
35) You told me you were 22. Really, who buys Wolfe's excuse?
36) I liked that Walter was proud of his mother's achievements. She must have been a helluva woman to have raised him as a single parent at that time.
37) Will it be wise of Michele to go and see Phillip? Surely, he'd be a middle aged man by now.

Chapters 17-19
38) Why do you think Clara and Lilly couldn't see Michele when she returned to 1944?
39) Michele finally puts together that Henry Irving is her father. Why do you think her mom never tried to tell Michele about time traveling?
40) Phoenix Warren is Phillip Walker...did you see that coming?
41) So Michele fell in love with her great-grandfather? Thoughts?
42) Thoughts on how it ends?
43) What do you think they'll cover in the sequel?
44) Will you read the sequel?

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Just finished. I never get my reading done until late in the day due to my weird work schedule.

Questions for Chapters 1 - 3

1) I thought the book started out nice. The dream intrigued me. I was wondering if the book was going to go a little 'Alice in Wonderland' on us, but now I'm not so sure. Anyone else's thoughts about who the guy in the mirror is and how the two will meet? I'm assuming they will meet.

I'm guessing that the boy is someone very important to a past relative. Based on the summary we know she goes back in time, so probably the love of a great aunts life or something.

2) What did you think of Michele's mom description of her dad? Is there something off about it or do you think that's just her mom's fanciful remembering of him?

I think that her memory is a little tainted. There's got to be more to the story then what we're hearing.

3) First impressions of the Grandparents? Do you like them or not?

They're exactly what I picture rich snobs to be like.

4) First thoughts of the mansion and Michele's room? Would you like to live there?

Michele's room sounds more like an apartment then a room. Sounds like she'll be spending a lot of time in there.

5) We now know the key in Michele's dream is the same one her father gave her mom. What do you think happened to Michele's dad? Do you think he left because of Marion's parents? Do you think something else happened? I wonder if she has a picture of what he looks like?

There's definitely something weird happening with her father. Maybe he's somehow related to the guy in her dreams? Or maybe he stole the key? or maybe it opens some treasure? who knows.

Advice I guess. I mean it could have foreshadowed her mom's death, especially if there is more to the story of how she died (yay conspiracies!).

Jex may be right. He could be a relative from the past. So far, I'm not too impressed with the story. Michele has a habit of capitalizing the first letter of every word.. Confusion and Mystery.

2) What did you think of Michele's mom description of her dad? Is there something off about it or do you think that's just her mom's fanciful remembering of him?

Yeah, the description makes it sound like her mom was in a one-way love affair with the dad.

3) First impressions of the Grandparents? Do you like them or not?

I'm supposed to not like em and keep thinking they're the villains, I think.

4) First thoughts of the mansion and Michele's room? Would you like to live there?

You know it!!

5) We now know the key in Michele's dream is the same one her father gave her mom. What do you think happened to Michele's dad? Do you think he left because of Marion's parents? Do you think something else happened? I wonder if she has a picture of what he looks like?

Went back to the past he came from? No, I don't think Marion's parents were involved.

Foreshadowing, most definitely.

message 30: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Hehehe. Well, I'm going to debunk your theory. My grandmother uses SO and every other phrase we youngins used and do use. Then again my granny is pretty hip. She has been listening to Metallica, Floyd, and Zeppelin since I can remember and listens to all of the new radio music plus stays up on celebrity gossip, news, court cases, TV series (her favorites being American Horror Story and Enlightened), and stays current with fashion trends.

She's one busy, hip lady! Embarrassingly, more than me. :\

Your granny sounds like my kind of lady. My grandmother would probably think that Metallica is an element and her idea of pop culture is Judge Judy. I still love her though <3

Sashana I'll have today's set of questions up by 8PM EST. I read yesterday's section but I haven't had the chance to answer the questions yet.

Sashana Answers for Chapters 1 - 3

1) I thought the book started out nice. The dream intrigued me. I was wondering if the book was going to go a little 'Alice in Wonderland' on us, but now I'm not so sure. Anyone else's thoughts about who the guy in the mirror is and how the two will meet? I'm assuming they will meet.
I didn't get the Alice in Wonderland vibes. You know what grabbed my attention even though it was minute? The fact that Michele has a stellar relationship with her mom. Usually in YA books the protagonists runs around doing crazy things and you have to wonder if the author forgets to mention the parents. I know it was a random thought, especially with so many other things going on. But that stood out to me.

2) What did you think of Michele's mom description of her dad? Is there something off about it or do you think that's just her mom's fanciful remembering of him?
I think that there was something shady of about how he disappeared. The grandparents said that he denied the money they offered him (and why would they lie about that?) and he sounds as if he was in love with Michele's mother. So I suspect some foul play. Personally I thought Michele's mother's story was a cliche. Young, runaway love that didn't work out...struggling single mom...I read about it and see it (in real life) all the time. Nothing earth shattering (excuse my cynicism)

3) First impressions of the Grandparents? Do you like them or not?
I'm still making up my mind. They could have met her at the airport even though they have a chauffeur. The jury is still out...

4) First thoughts of the mansion and Michele's room? Would you like to live there?
Visit? Sure. Live? No. It seems like one of those places where you can 'look but not touch.' Almost like a museum. I have a family friend and she has the nicest house that I have ever seen but her furniture, while aesthetically pleasing, is very uncomfortable. And you have to sit upright and perch, not lean back and relax.

5) We now know the key in Michele's dream is the same one her father gave her mom. What do you think happened to Michele's dad? Do you think he left because of Marion's parents? Do you think something else happened? I wonder if she has a picture of what he looks like?
I think he's alive, that's what my instincts are telling me.

Yup.

Sashana Questions for Chapters 4-6

1. I know we haven't heard much about him, but do you think that Michele's dad is dead?

2. Michele has a lot of deja vu going on. Could we be dealing with some kind of reincarnation here?

3. There are some eerie similarities between Clara and Michele: both are orphans, both were taken in by Windsors (though Michele is technically a Windsor herself, but you get the picture), and they both meet up on the same days (albiet different year). Do you think that this is could be the same thing that happened in Juliet where history kept repeating itself time after time? Or is it something else entirely?

4. Any ideas/theories on why Mr. Windsor would adopt Clara when he already has biological kids? Do you think that he is genuinely a kind man looking to adopt an orphan (*scoffs* yeah right!) or does he have ulterior motives?

5.
“We’re the only students here from families of the New York Four Hundred. Our mission is to take over where Mrs. Astor left off and rule the next generation of society with elegance, and defend against the antics of the nouveau riche—who just make us look bad.” Bleh! Who are these girls??
-----------------------------------------------

Side note: I'm getting flashbacks here! The way she gets pulled into the diary reminds me of how Harry (from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling) gets pulled into Dumbledore's pensive. The diary also reminds me of the diary from A Great and Terrible Beauty and the similarities between Michele and Clara reminds me of the similarities between Juliet and Giulietta from Juliet by Anne Fortier.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Questions for Chapters 4-6

1. I know we haven't heard much about him, but do you think that Michele's dad is dead?

Maybe he somehow traveled back in time without the key and he got stuck there. That's why the key was only thing left behind from him.

2. Michele has a lot of deja vu going on. Could we be dealing with some kind of reincarnation here?

I don't know about reincarnation, but there's definitely something strange happening.

Maybe she's really Clara thrown into the future via time travel. Actually I have no idea. They do seem very similar though, especially now that we know Clara may be a Windsor as well. Finding out about that made me think that maybe there is more to the family story (of Michele's) then we are being told. Maybe she's an illegitimate child and the Henry stuff was all some weird cover up. (I'm full of conspiracy ideas today apparently..)

4. Any ideas/theories on why Mr. Windsor would adopt Clara when he already has biological kids? Do you think that he is genuinely a kind man looking to adopt an orphan (*scoffs* yeah right!) or does he have ulterior motives?

Well we find out at the end of the section that Clara is his daughter from a mistress. Maybe it took him this long to find her after finding out her mother had died. And now he wants her to have a good life even if he can't explain to others why.

5. “We’re the only students here from families of the New York Four Hundred. Our mission is to take over where Mrs. Astor left off and rule the next generation of society with elegance, and defend against the antics of the nouveau riche—who just make us look bad.” Bleh! Who are these girls??

Rich snobs. End of story :-P

P.S. - I'm also having a lot of flash backs to books. The being invisible to all but a few reminds me of Hereafter and the back and forth between present and future reminds me of Juliet, although I'm pretty sure this one is actual time travel not just another story.

1. I know we haven't heard much about him, but do you think that Michele's dad is dead?

I do, but am unsure.

It is strange. Maybe we are dealing with reincarnation.

3. I don't think so. The girl from the dreams looked like Michele and Clara doesn't so I'm not thinking they're the same person.

4. Any ideas/theories on why Mr. Windsor would adopt Clara when he already has biological kids? Do you think that he is genuinely a kind man looking to adopt an orphan (*scoffs* yeah right!) or does he have ulterior motives?

Maybe she's his child with someone else or a child of someone they knew who died???

Elitists.

1. I know we haven't heard much about him, but do you think that Michele's dad is dead?

I think he's dead, yeah.

2. Michele has a lot of deja vu going on. Could we be dealing with some kind of reincarnation here?

I don't think so. I think its just time travel.

3. There are some eerie similarities between Clara and Michele: both are orphans, both were taken in by Windsors (though Michele is technically a Windsor herself, but you get the picture), and they both meet up on the same days (albiet different year). No, like Lisarenee said. Michele and Clara aren't the same person.

4. Any ideas/theories on why Mr. Windsor would adopt Clara when he already has biological kids? Do you think that he is genuinely a kind man looking to adopt an orphan (*scoffs* yeah right!) or does he have ulterior motives?

No, I just thought he had a reason to, not a sinister reason but just a secret one.

Yep, that's the scene I was talking about.

Sashana Kim, are you still doing today's set of questions?

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapters 7 - 10

1) Why can only certain people see Michele and others can't?

2) I wish we knew more about the key and how it works and where Michele's dad got it from.

3) Were you surprised that Cassie was okay with being Michele's alibi? Were you surprised she seemed open to possibility that what Michele was telling her was true?

4) Thoughts about the coat traveling through time?

5) Thoughts on the Fakin' Jamaicans?

6) So now we know why Clara was adopted into the Windsor family. Do you think Clara would have found out if Michele wasn't there? Did her presence alter the situation in any way? Did someone need to know in the future that Clara was a true blood relative? I just can't help feeling like there must be some reason Clara can see her. Could this be why or do you think there is another explanation?

7) What did you think of Ben Archer? Should Michele hold out for finding a way to be with Phillip or should she move ahead in her real time?

8) How do you think the field trip will affect Michele's time traveling?

Midu Hadi | 2744 comments Questions for Chapters 7 - 10

1) Why can only certain people see Michele and others can't?

I think only the people she has to help or get help from can see her.

2) I wish we knew more about the key and how it works and where Michele's dad got it from.

True but then this is just the first book, right?

3) Were you surprised that Cassie was okay with being Michele's alibi? Were you surprised she seemed open to possibility that what Michele was telling her was true?

Yeah, I was. Is it that easy to accept your neighbor's been time-traveling? Not!

4) Thoughts about the coat traveling through time?

Yeah, weird. Maybe objects can make it through.

5) Thoughts on the Fakin' Jamaicans?

They were hilarious.

I think eventually the spiteful daughter would have let something slip. But maybe Michele's presence gave Clara and her father a chance to bond. Kinda feels like Juliet Michele righting wrongs, as opposed to rebirth till she can be together with her guy.

7) What did you think of Ben Archer? Should Michele hold out for finding a way to be with Phillip or should she move ahead in her real time?

Ben's a nice guy but I hope Michele finds a way to be with Phillip.

8) How do you think the field trip will affect Michele's time traveling?

She should be all right since there's a Walker house there.

Sashana Answers for Chapters 7 - 10

1) Why can only certain people see Michele and others can't?
I don’t know- maybe because it’s Clara’s diary? But I can’t explain how Philip can see her.

2) I wish we knew more about the key and how it works and where Michele's dad got it from.
Me too. And I wonder if she can travel to different time periods. Why hasn’t she tried to test that out? Her first instinct should have been to try going back to see if she could save her mom. Thats what I would do.

3) Were you surprised that Cassie was okay with being Michele's alibi? Were you surprised she seemed open to possibility that what Michele was telling her was true?
No, I wasn’t surprised. I knew that they would be friends from the beginning.

4) Thoughts about the coat traveling through time?
That was odd. If things can be taken through time why not people?

5) Thoughts on the Fakin' Jamaicans?
>.< I know she probably added that scene to be funny, but as a Jamaican I am really offended. It’s such a stereotype. First of all we don’t speak like that, second: we speak English and NOT Rasta. Our dialect is patois NOT Rasta. Rastafarianism is a religion.

I don’t think she would’ve found out if Michele wasn’t there, because she was searching for Michele when she stumbled in on the conversation. I don't think that's the case. How come the rest of her blood relatives can’t see he? I don’t think it’s a family thing. I think it’s the diary.

7) What did you think of Ben Archer? Should Michele hold out for finding a way to be with Phillip or should she move ahead in her real time?
IMO she doesn’t know much about Philip OR Archer. Insta-love much? She’s been there for a week and she’s already in love? Yeah right! (Excuse my cynicism)

8) How do you think the field trip will affect Michele's time traveling?
I think she might get in trouble because she seems to lose track of time when she’s in the past. I predict mayhem.

Was this word in use back then?

#6: That's a good way to look at it. Retribution as opposed to reincarnation, it didn't cross my mind.

Philip declared, the sparkle returning to his eyes. “I’m taking you on a proper date.”

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm betting that it wasn't a popular term. I would think dating would be too risque, but I could be wrong.
