Experiment BL626 | 358 comments Hello, this GR Librarian ( http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/12... ) have been deleting the series' name and number in book titles. For example: she's changing "Blah blah book (Blah, #1)" to just "Blah blah blah."

Her profile is set to private so I am unable to PM her to tell about the rules. And it looks like she has been doing alot of these bad changes (http://www.goodreads.com/librarian/us... ).

Would an official from GR please PM this user about GR's Policies & Practices? And could someone undo all the bad changes that she have made?

Technically, while not encouraged, this is ok. (It's not encouraged because it keeps the book from showing up when searching by series name and certain other places.) The series information shows up properly on the book's page if the book has been added to the series properly.

I don't understand, the "Librarian Manual" says differently.

http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/73...
Section: Title.

If the book is part of a series, that information should be included within parentheses following the title. The standard accepted format on Goodreads is as follows:

(Series Name, #_)

Regarding the formatting of series information in book titles: many different formats have been used to label a series in the past on Goodreads and it created problems with librarians changing formats back and forth. After a discussion in the Goodreads Librarians Group, it was decided that the best way to format a series label was according to the example above. However, if you see a series labeled in a slightly different format, it is not necessary to re-format the label. The most important thing is that the book at least have a correct series name and volume number. But when adding a new series label, please use the accepted format stated above.

*The bolding is my own.

As far as I understand, the manual are the rules and people must follow the rules or else you'll be having people re-editing everything to their preference rather than adhering to GR's standard policies & practices.

If GR does not want the series' title and number in the book's title, please state so. I really despise people following standards other than GR's. There should be only one standard and everyone should follow that standard.

Drat, I keep forgetting to update that bit of the manual to reflect more recent consensus based on discussions in this group (since the series feature was added).

Thanks for the reminder.

Experiment BL626 | 358 comments Please pardon me if I gave you any impression of hostility. It just frustrates me when I edit something and someone else re-edit them back without a very good reason. Putting series' title and number in the book's title is easy enough of a task, but it's tedious and long, especially for 15+ books series. I do not like having 30-something minutes of GR Librarian work disappearing on me because someone else prefer it another way, their way. It would be a whole 'nother matter if I did something wrong that went against GR standard.

Meredith (mcgraced) | 84 comments Experiment, I'm glad you brought it up, as I'm been diligently following what the manual says on siting a series - and I read a lot of series!

Rivka, it might be worth a head's up post to librarians when that update happens. Thank you.

MissJessie | 866 comments Amen on the update notice re changes. Perhaps at the top of the Board under a separate heading. It's not always possible for everyone (me anyway) to read every single post that comes to the Librarian board; I don't think I am alone in this. But it would be easy to read an Update even when time is short.

Lori (moderatrixlori) | 75 comments If I'm understanding this correctly, unless a book has the series name in parenthesis in the title, it will not show up when you search by the series, correct?

My group is producing a free anthology, broken up into 5 volumes. 2 have already been released and uploaded. These stories were produced in response to an event we held in our group called "Hot Summer Days". The name of the anthology is "Don't Read in the Closet". We created two series because one of the series includes the individual stories that some authors wrote and uploaded as a single story and the other series just contains the anthologies. Some people search for the books by "Hot Summer Days" and some search for it by "Don't Read in the Closet". The problem is that "Hot Summer Days" is not in the title of any of the books so a search on that does not turn up anything.

So, do we need to add Hot Summer Days to every anthology/story in order for the search to work? Are there plans to be able to search by series name?

Thanks!

Caroline | 58 comments If you're updating the manual, someone probably wants to take a look at the "edit details" page for books. I noticed this morning it still has the "If this book is in a series, put which book it is in parenthesis after the title" pop-up prompt when you go to edit the title field.

I still prefer to have the series info in the title field, but in the end it's just nice to have a consensus and not do double-work.

Correct. However, it only needs to be on one edition of a combined work for search to find it.
