Katerina (klymene) Funny... My mom was annoyed with me all day for being terrible at explaining things. Lol. Congrats on Mod-dom, Rae-Rae.

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Well, maybe you are, Klym, but since I knew what you were trying to say it didn't matter. And thanks! I was pretty excited when Kate contacted me about it.

Yep and standing up for what you believe/stand for takes more strength than teasing someone.

I totally agree with Kieron, that is such a dumb comment to make! People have always socialized, and because we have phones now is no reason to stop reading. Seriously, that is one of the silliest comments i've ever seen. No offense :)
I go out a lot, but I read as well.

Same here, I read a ton but I also go out a lot too. From the way alot of people put it, it's like there is this rule that you can't be quote, 'nerdy' and be social.

message 57: by Katerina (new)

Katerina (klymene) You know, if someone makes a comment like that, they shouldn't be in this group... or on Goodreads for that matter.

message 59: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 11, 2012 05:03PM) (new)

Of course not! Though, I'm called one all the time for it. But mostly by my friends, LOL. I'm totally obsessed with the hunger games and my friend was like, "Wow, just wow. You're such a nerd!" But I'm not the one who read it three times, am I? I've only read it twice, so ha!

message 60: by Lia (new)

Lia (luckylia) | 9 comments I don't actually agree that loving books makes one a nerd or a geek nor anti-social. If it does,so what?We love what we love. And who cares about the stereotypical activities the youth "normally" engage in today? "Normal" is so overrated! Here in our country, "Normal" is having a love life, dating, texting friends like every minute/chatting online, drinking alcohol, etc. If that's other people's ways on fighting off boredom during spare time, mine is reading and some on friends/family or on GoodReads. Besides, reading enriches our knowledge and it's fun at the same time.

message 62: by Adam (new)

Adam I don't like being called smart and such because I read a lot. Because, frankly, there is so little I know. I don't think I know much of anything, regardless of the vast amount of books I've read.

message 63: by £mily (new)

£mily (3mily991) | 1107 comments Nerd is a horrible thing to be branded by (yes, I have been called that many times). Because really, how do you define a nerd? When one thinks of nerd, one usually thinks of pimply teenagers who live in a darkened room playing computer games, building computers and solving rubix cubes.
I don't do any of the above things, but their is no problem with any of them. Just because I read while other people are watching X-Factor and Biggest Loser and gossiping about how John dumped Kate for Pheobe, doesn't make me a nerd, or any smarter than anyone else, it just means, like them, I indulge in a pasttime I enjoy. I still have a social life.

Irene (wingdesilverii) Adam wrote: "I don't like being called smart and such because I read a lot. Because, frankly, there is so little I know. I don't think I know much of anything, regardless of the vast amount of books I've read."

It's a stero typical assumption, reading a lot = smart, in this society.

Personally, I don't think you are 'smart' because of the amount you are reading. Being smart is educating yourself, maybe through reading, and your reading choices increase your knowledge and decrease your ignorance. Also, when you do start learning more you realize how much you don't know.

I don't play sports, and I don't care for any sport at all really. I don't think playing sports executes any chance of success for someone's future though. At my highschool, there are a lot of 'nerds' who play sports (primarily the track kids). Sports are actually a great way to get scholarships for colleges to to help pay for an education to be a teacher, lawyer, accountant, or anything really.

I do understand what you are saying though. A majority of the people who call us nerds are the people that are ignorant and should be worrying about their own future.

That is true. Perhaps I have been educated to such a level that I really see how much I don't know and don't understand about anything.

message 67: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 18, 2012 07:14PM) (new)

There's no need to be insecure about being called a nerd. Of course, 'nerd' can translate into many different things, and when it's directed at me, I like to think of it as a compliment. I don't mind if people think I'm a genius, lol! What's interesting though is usually the people who make that comment are ignorant and haven't ever given reading a chance because of that 'scary' nerd stereotype that surrounds it. Before, I never actually liked reading either until I picked up a book I actually enjoyed. That's all it takes, for people to start reading more. Sometimes I want to smack classmates on the back of their head whenever we do novel study in English class and they come out of it really amazed that a book was actually interesting.

Reading has really helped me with my writing skills - therefore I can actually say that I'm really proud of my writing. Mostly I just think it's their loss if they don't want to give it a chance.

Then again, I know plenty of really, really intelligent IB students that have no interest in reading as a recreation either. So I guess it can go both ways.

Taking college classes has really shown me how much I don't know even though I am learning more. I guess it's because more doors get opened and behind them are new ideas and endless amounts of information.

Yeah, I've actually reached this point where at University level I have learned how to do a great many things. Then I've run into a particular subject in my field where they are delving even DEEPER into things. It's seriously like starting all over again! And now I realize I may not have fully understood those things I already learned about haha

message 71: by Sophia (new)

Sophia No it does not. It may make you a bookworm but not a nerd. You're not a nerd as long as you have some sort of social life outside your books.

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think were dorks because we read so much. All my friends enjoy reading, so does that make me and my friends dorks? I personally have never heard anyone call someone a dork because they read so much. At my school, some people say to people that are reading, reading horse do you ever want to talk. Most people just ignore this if it is said to them. To answer your question, non of us are dorks.

ReadingToTheStarsAndBack Yes! The best people are people who are nerds and read! Think of John and Hank Green! Think of nerdfighteria!

Nerds Unite! DFTBA!!

message 75: by breanna (new)

breanna (bremanley) Nooo I prefer the term geek.

message 76: by Elysia (new)

Elysia (elysia_rae) Okay, I'll admit, I'm a bookworm and a HUGE nerd, but I don't see anything wrong with that. I don't really see how reading a lot makes you a nerd or a geek, but if it does, who cares? You read a lot, that's great! You're a nerd? Brilliant! I wouldn't let something a bully said make you stop doing something you love. And besides, the best authors are the best readers, and then that would make them the best nerds!

So nerd or not, just have fun reading, however much you do!

This may sound stupid, but I think reading a ton (especially across genres) makes you the life of any party with the wealth of trivia you have tucked away. Not to mention it makes you a great partner in "Trivia Pursuit"--LOL!

Reading makes you a nerd......WHO CARES!!! We ALL love reading and it only matters what WE think.
"FOLLOWING" the crowd, NO ONE should do that, everyone is INDIVIDUAL, and they are allowed to do anything they LOVE, or PASSIONATE about, they are their own person. And if reading makes you a NERD, a DORK, SMART, then so be it. Everyone reads, and we ALL love it,and just because we LOVE reading, it doesn't mean we make reading the first priority of our life, we do OTHER stuff as well, so how does this make us a NERD.
Most of us like being called smart or a nerd, so WE ARE NERDS, AND WHO CARES!!! It's us who choose, that we are nerds 'cause we are obsessed with reading.
I DON'T THINK WE ARE NERDS.
I DON't MIND BEING A NERD. But I don't like being called smart. But that is what I CHOSE. So it is US who choose.

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (Oceanwhisper) | 28 comments I don't think you're anything but a creative person if you like to read! But at my other school when I lived in aussie (Australia) they often called me 'Writing freak' and 'Book nerd'. Sure it hurt when people put it like that and the way they said it, looking down their noses as if they were of higher status than me, but I felt quite proud of it also, as I am (lol).

message 82: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 21, 2013 06:02PM) (new)

That is exactly how everyone should think.

message 83: by Adam (new)

Adam To me, reading is an escape from the mundane outside world where I can battle dragons, fly, and do anything. So to answer your question: no, I don't think reading makes you a nerd. It just makes you more cultured.

message 84: by Jadyn (new)

Jadyn (fldsmdfr) It makes you a more experienced person as well. You can learn so much from reading.

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree. :D

message 86: by joanne (new)

joanne (cabeswaters) For me, I DO think that reading a lot makes you a 'book nerd' of sorts. But I really don't see the problem. Usually those who read a lot are also naturally smart, and they do their work ON TIME, and yes, in some places they call us nerds.

I personally think I go to a wonderful school. As a matter of fact, its referred to a lot by kids in other schools as a 'nerd's school' because you have to sit an entry test. Here, yes, the smart kids are called 'freaks' but they're also admired. For example, one girl in my class ALWAYS gets good marks in her maths tests. Of all the tests we took, she got below 100% only once. Instead of being teased, people go to her for help during class, and ask to see her test papers once we get them back. No-one really cares that people whether people are smart or not. Some of the most popular people in my class are also smartest.

The main thing is, EVERYBODY has reads books. Even those who tease must have enjoyed at least one book in their lives. If not, well, I don't know why they bother living their lives if they're not going to do something with it. Our class isn't afraid to constantly exchange books, and more then once I've been walking around with my head in a book only to have someone tell me 'Oh, I've read that book, it's really good.' I once overheard an exchange between some of the 'popular girls' where one said 'Oh no, you're turning into one of those sad people who read during lunch.' Her friend replied 'So what, the book's really good.' and continued reading.

I'm still told I read too much, by everybody, but I don't really give it a second thought. I've been called a nerd before, but never picked on for it, and so I never let myself be bothered.

There is NOTHING wrong with being called a nerd, especially for such a reason as reading lots of books. Why should these people stop you from doing what you enjoy?

Wow that was a long rant...

message 87: by Jadyn (new)

Jadyn (fldsmdfr) Yeah, it was. But there is nothing wrong with that! Plenty of people on here do that! I've probably done it once or twice! :)

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah!!!!!! Big messages are great!!!!!!! There ARE plenty of people who do that.
And you have made a very good point.

message 89: by Erica (new)

Erica | 98 comments No Way! I'm one of the most popular kids at school. I'm not a nerd. So what if you read a lot? Just tell them to get f****d.

message 90: by Erica (new)

Erica | 98 comments BTW. I LOVE books!!!

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

Just reading books does not make you a nerd, but if you are devoted to the practice and consider yourself a booknut, then yes. But being a nerd is the funnest thing on the planet, and is not a bad thing.
"Saying 'I notice you're a nerd' is like saying, 'Hey, I notice that you'd rather be intelligent than be stupid, that you'd rather be thoughtful than be vapid, that you believe that there are things that matter more than the arrest record of Lindsay Lohan. Why is that?' In fact, it seems to me that most contemporary insults are pretty lame." - John Green
I think that just about sums it up, don't you?

message 92: by anilee (last edited Jan 23, 2013 02:39PM) (new)

anilee (anileesghost) | 46 comments No because despite the term John Green used, that's more "geek" than "nerd".

I agree reading takes me to a place I've never been

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

THAT is completely true, the one thing I LOVE about reading, is that it takes you to a place, where you can DO ANYTHING!!!!

message 98: by [deleted user] (new)

Not sure because definition of 'nerd' is variative, some wears it with pride, some takes it as an insult. The thing is, don't care what other people think of you, don't give up reading just because someone labels you. If they think reading = nerd, it's THEIR LOSS because reading is a wonderful journey.

Thank god for people like you guys in this forum who really love books and doesn't look down to people who likes to read. Maybe we don't know each other but I feel really close to you all. You guys restore my faith in humanity, literally.
