Oh goodness, that's a long list. Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:Pride and Prejudice
His Dark Materials Trilogy
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Color Purple
The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe
All of my Richard Brautigan books
And I would say the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but I don't actually own them :(
My Harry Potter series -- other than that, I'd probably lend out anything else that I have. If it's a book that I really like, I'll bother people to get them back.
I had some fantastic books in my flat in London - a very irreverant, funny and interesting book on Turkey that was banned in Turkey and out of print, one of only 100 copies of a book of engravings and a huge white-leather with gold tooling book of a 1,001 Nights with tissue paper between the coloured plates (the book was really old). I would never ever have parted with these but they were stolen. The person who stole them would have sold them too.
Cheri (message 54):I agree! I have to tell myself that not all books are keepers. My sis joined BookMooch and I've "donated" lots of books to her to trade up for something we both have on our TBR.
For me, it would be my Stephen Kings, Harry Potters, Narnias, my new fav (Lamb), the Evolving Self, The Lazarus Case, and I'm sure some more. I have a bunch stored right now in preparation for selling my house, so it's hard when I cant' see them.
For me, I have a stash in the garage right now of the ones I haven't been able to part with including several autographed ones:a Serendipity book autographed by the author and illustrator that I got as a Christmas present one year (strangely from an aunt that didn't appear to like me much)
Julie of the Wolves, autographed by the author whom I met at a reading/booksigning when I was rather small
and a couple others I can't think of right now..
I also have a hardbound set of the Little Women/Little Men books that my grandmother gave me ... she also sent me a set of the Little House on the Prairie series... I never knew her well and these were probably the coolest things she ever did for me.
A full set of the Black Stallion books that I collected as a kid (seeing a theme yet)
My Chronicles of Narnia set that my dad gave me for Christmas
I also have a set of Dr. Suess books, and these Disney series books that I learned to read on.
I have this amazing set of books.. they all start with "the Value of..." and contain stories about historical figures. I think my mom got them from a door to door salesman but I don't remember for sure.
Like most of us there are really too many to list, and the books I love and keep around are the ones that impacted me in some way... I am definitely going to need a larger space eventually...lol
I don't think I'll ever see my Narnia again. We didn't have a falling out or anything, more of a way to busy to call each other thing. And now I live 800 miles away. I'll get a new copy eventually and I won't ever lend it out again. As soon as they stop releasing those movie versions...I have thought of a few others, still in my possession, that will never leave my house: H2G2, my Ann of Green Gables box set, and some of my better art books.
Years ago we moved about an awful lot... seven times in six years at one point... and we had to get rid of some books along the way for various reasons. The experience was painful, and some of the books which we lost are now impossible to get again. I have vowed never to let any of our books go again. If we end up with too many books and have no space to move, well we'll move into the garage :o)
I will never ever in life part with Birdy by William Wharton. It is the first full length novel I had read and loved since I became a novitiate reader back in my first year high school.Just opening the cover brings back the time of age of innocence and the day of discovery.
This book made what I am today--it made me awake.
My warm regards and happy reading..^_^
Gina, we also moved around the whole time and I made sure the first things I would pack were my books and keep a really good eye on them!!!!
The last time we moved, the removal company did an inventory check to give us a quote, but didn't seem to notice the vast number of books - I think they were concentrating on the furniture. When the removal day arrived, the poor men were groaning and struggling along. The one guy was counting the book boxes as he went along... he said he gave up at box number forty.
Gina, I used to put my books with clothes when moving, so my parents wouldn't realize how many I had noticing the weight of the boxes! For about 23 years I manged to hide it to them and then after only two years my boyfriend realizes when he is moving our stuff while I am working!!!
