It's frightening, really. There are so many people who have no clue, and worse, no interest in the state of the nation.

Can you imagine Trump running the show without anyone keeping an eye on

A couple years ago I referenced Winston Churchill's letter to Hirohito declaring war on the Empire of Japan. After stating a list of nasty things the British would do to Japan, Churchill signed off with the 19th century standard, "I remain Sir, your most humble and obedient servant." I was in my late 60s and my friend was 30 something. I'd been so struck by the humor that it never occurred to me that it wasn't general knowledge.

Just curious... Is anyone else concerned about the EPA gutting regulations on clean air, clean water and greenhouse gases that took decades to implement?

It seems to me that, in the age of Climate Change, when we're already feeling the effects with droughts, wildfires and 500-year storms, extending the life of coal-fired power plants, etc. is political and economic expediency at the cost of cutting our own throats.

Is this a situation where our children will indeed pay for the sins of their fathers????

Yes, yes, and yes. It makes me furious. Most things the Idiot-in-Chief is doing are reversible. Environmental destruction isn't. And the window of opportunity for minimizing the harm from climate change is closing fast.

In other news--we attended Eldest Son's college graduation Sunday, and are taking a few days hiding out in an Air B&B in Grand Junction before doing some backpacking in Utah then finally returning to CA.

The road trip has been... a trip. Roasted to death in the heat and humidity of North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana. Then yesterday we crossed the Rocky Mountains in a snow storm that ended up closing the freeway (fortunately AFTER we got through).

Yes, Virginia, there is still good news in the world!

Drinking 25 cups of coffee a day is still safe for the heart, study says
...research, presented Monday at the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) Conference, claimed that after looking at the heart scans of 8,412 people, it had “debunked” previous studies linking coffee to poor heart health.

I find this particularly heartening (pun intended) since every afternoon the enticing aroma of my second pot of coffee is just so irresistible.

Martin (oldfossil) | 378 comments I have often ranted that the man who invented the Mute button on the remote control deserved to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

In today's "Guardian" newspaper an article (about Uber cabs) states that it was invented or introduced by a Robert Adler, of Zenith Radio, in 1956. What a pity that Nobel Prizes are never awarded postumously.

Martin (oldfossil) | 378 comments How irritating it can be, not to hear clearly. I am sure that I have just heard the announcer on the BBC classical channel (Radio 3) announce a "Concierto for elbow and short orchestra".

Dear old Gerard Hoffnung would have loved that. How many of you remember the recording of his talk to the Oxford Union? He read out letters, supposedly from foreign hoteliers replying to enquiries in English? "I can accommodate you and your wife but cannot abide your dog" and the classic "There is a French widow in every bedroom offering delightful prospects". Also the hilarious bricklayer story.

I must get out my copy of that recording. It's on a ten inch vinyl. No, madam; a ten inch vinyl is an old fashioned sort of gramophone record, not a medium-sized vibrator.

Sadly, the raconteur has gone the way of disco. I was lucky enough to have had a local library years ago that had Hoffnung recordings. Nowadays, British classic entertainment doesn't extend farther than Downton Abbey.

Actually, PBS offers quite a lot of variety in areas with multiple PBS stations. I used to live in LA with 5 PBS broadcast channels, and received all sorts of British entertainment, current and nostalgic.

What the Hell is happening to our world? Is is a re-run of the 1930s, when men who went on to become aggressive dictators were elected by perfectly democratic processes: Hitler, Mussolini, Peron, etc (I exclude Stalin and Franco who seized power).

Spanish police arrest cocaine bigwig with drugs hidden under toupee

Sillines 75

Every time I catch myself doing something which can only reasonably be called stupid...

Invariably, I come across a story in the news such as the one above about a fellow trying to hide half a kilo of cocaine under his toupee.

Such stories prove beyond doubt that, in comparison, I am a damn rocket scientist!

Amazing, isn't it????

Not only are we offered an excuse to spend an entire day eating ice cream...

thick-373064_1280

...but the purveyors of ice cream are conjuring up a holiday that ALMOST sounds legit.

scale-3311708_1280

Fortunately, the country is more health conscious...theoretically.

obesity-3217137_1280

HOWEVER, it's only once a year, we might as well succumb to the marketing ploy and ingest FREE SUGAR all day.

Damn! That subliminal marketing really works!

I remember a newspaper report, years ago, of a German shoplifter who tried to smuggle a frozen chicken past the checkout by hiding it in his homburg hat. He was discovered when he fell down in the checkout queue. The frozen bird had cooled his brain into unconsciousness, and then rolled out of his hat onto the floor.

First kidney failure, then a $540,842 bill for dialysis
The bill was more than the typical cost of a kidney transplant.

For the record, there was a followup story noting that the company in question forgave the bill once the media reported the story nationally.

However...

This healthcare system of ours is bankrupting families all across the country. I honestly do not understand how our elected representatives, or anyone of conscience, can defend this type of price gouging.

pap -noun-

A young man in India who received a BMW for his 22nd birthday pushed it into a river because it wasn't the Jaguar he had been hoping for, police claim.

Excellent article from the head economist at JP Morgan Chase which very clearly explains the uselessness of Trump's tariffs.
(See, even Wall Street thinks he's nuts!)
What Chinese Tariffs Mean for the US Economy

AND NOW THIS...

Here’s what new tariffs will cost the average American household
J.P. Morgan estimates the average American household will be down $1,000 per year thanks to the newest round of tariffs on Chinese goods.

Honest responses please:
How many of us, including Trump supporters, are really willing to pay $1000 this year (and possibly, in future years) for this president's ridiculously obvious political grandstanding????

Frankly, Rebecca, I was surprised to get any response at all. The HC seems heavily into the usual summer slowdown.

Unfortunately, we don't have any Trump supporters brave enough to defend his obvious insanity. Also, it's entirely possible that China will win a trade war with the US. The reality today IS a global market, and, unlike Trump, President Xi listens to his economic advisers.
