They can be proud to be British, right up until they remember about Brexit. Then things may get more iffy.

I have read a lot about the pros and cons of the EU, but I don't know much about it or Brexit.

One good thing about Trump is that he has scared a lot of Europeans, and the radical right wingers are losing power.

I just heard "adult" used as a verb for the first time - as in, "adulting", or acting like an adult. I don't remember anybody ever giving me the choice.

My favorite is journaling. It goes both ways. The big reveal at the end of a book.

message 1060: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Douglass (rdouglass) | 2433 comments Mod
I've been hearing "adulting" a lot. I kind of like it when applied to the older teens just making the transition (Second Son is kind of into adulting; his older brother not so much).

"Journaling," as in writing in a journal, has been around for a long time, I think.

Did I miss anything important?

I've been watching a British TV series called detectorists for the first time this weekend. If you can find it either on cable (Acorn) or at the library, watch it!

message 1064: by Brena (new)

Brena Mercer | 617 comments Detectorists is fun. Cuckoo and Vexed are also good. On Sunday nights I watch new to me episodes of Death in Paradise and Unforgotten on PBS. Usually Netflix gets shows before PBS.

Martin (oldfossil) | 378 comments Another good BBC TV series is "Cunk on Britain" (BBC 2). The actress Diane Morgan plays Philomena Cunk, a po-faced unbelievably ignorant humourless lady who is attempting to create a series summarising British history. It is hilarious. She interviews real experts and academics, asking them the dumbest questions. I don't know how they keep straight faces, as when Cunk asks if "King Arthur came a lot"? (confused by Arthur and Camelot). Once or twice one can see that they are struggling not to break out into giggles.
I believe that there is some way of tricking the BBC into releasing the iPlayer episodes to people outside the UK, but I can't remember how it is done.

I looked up Cunk, and full episodes are on Youtube. I will definitely have to check that out. One of my very favorite shows is Episodes. I also liked Extras and Very British Things. On the very British I noticed that a lot of the national quirks are also very American. Probably because so many of us are British descent.

Republicans have so corrupted EPA, Americans can only save it in the voting booth
Last week, [EPA Administrator] Pruitt implemented a new policy that makes it much more difficult for EPA to use science to create regulations that would protect public health. It’s a policy straight out of the tobacco playbook. ...GOP leaders value polluter profits over public and environmental health...

Has anyone else noticed that the foreign press is now fairly regularly holding up the Trump administration as an example of government corruption?

Worried about your cable and phone bills????

Tired of being overcharged?

Tired of seeing poorly explained fees appear on your monthly bill?

Then you may want to write your congressman and senators IMMEDIATELY because your bill will very likely go up next month.

And, as an added bonus, your internet provider gets to decide what you may see.

If you don't get involved now, you will indeed pay for it later. ...Literally. ...Starting next month.

U.S. 'net neutrality' rules will end on June 11 -FCC
The Federal Communications Commission said in a notice on Thursday that landmark 2015 U.S. open-internet rules will cease on June 11, and new rules handing providers power over what content consumers can access will take effect.

Senate Democrats force vote to reinstate net neutrality
The issue galvanizes Democrats and is poised to pass the Senate, but it faces an uphill battle in the House and would likely be vetoed by President Donald Trump if it somehow gets to his desk.

Can't say I'm a big Fitzgerald fan. If I had to pick the one book on the list that I enjoyed the most, I'd say Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth. I'm not a huge historical novel reader, but that one definitely appealed to me.

I caught most of the show last night on PBS of their run down of the books. Apparently, you can vote once a day until voting ends and it doesn't have to be for the same book. Choices are tough, but I like "Catcher in the Rye" and "Alice in Wonderland".

The country once thought it was a great idea to put a businessman in the Oval Office and elected Hoover, whose administration was a disaster. We've now elected another businessman and there isn't a single person in his party or administration who isn't cleaning up after him.

So, the real question is: How could you NOT notice????

I'm having trouble with this myself. I have a few neighbors who had Trump signs in their yards, and I try to avoid them whenever possible. I'm afraid that if one of them complains about the heat this summer, I'll let loose with "I GUESS YOU SHOULDA VOTED FOR A PRESIDENT WHO BELIEVES IN GLOBAL WARMING AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES, HUH?"

I don't have any problems with Trump supporters. In fact, I feel compelled to help them by offering directions to the local public high school's free literacy program.

message 1091: by Martin (new)

Martin (oldfossil) | 378 comments My laugh for today. I went to the hardware shop to get some things for a diy job: two packets of small woodscrews and a pair of steel corner braces. All came in plastic packets. The screws are labelled "Average contents 23" and "Average contents 17". That's fine. I wasn't planning to actually count them to check. The pair of corner braces are labelled: "Average contents 2". My wife and I are still chuckling over the idea that occasionally one might find a packet with just one corner brace, or even three corner braces.

message 1092: by Brena (new)

Brena Mercer | 617 comments I have never seen anything labeled average numbers. Average 2 could be a problem.

I recently put together a barn door that required 15 huge bolts. There had to be about 100 identical bolts in the packaging. What happened there? Lazy factory worker didn't want to count out 15?

I just bought some shampoo and conditioner that didn't have any directions on the bottles. I had a moment of panic. Am I that person who eats the silicon bags in the pockets of clothing?

Stick-on swimwear is summer’s hottest new trend as models storm Miami catwalk in Duct-tape bikinis
We thought taking off a normal swimming costume was a pain...

Silliness a 50

At first, I genuinely thought fashion designers had finally fallen completely in the deep end of the wacko pool by sending their models out wearing duct tape. BUT... Then, I realized what a terrific time saver this could be for women. At the same time, they can remove their bikini and give themselves a Brazilian.

Joel wrote: "On the subject of So Many Books, So Little Time - I'm curious. How many books do people actually read in a year?"

It's tough to keep track because I go in spurts. I'll read maybe one a week, then I'll burn through 3 or 4 over a weekend.

It's also not all apples in that barrel. I'll read a sci-fi or action adventure and just speed on to the end. However, I also read a lot of non-fiction, where I'll sometimes read a bit and mull it over for a while before continuing. So, the depth of the material is a factor.

Overall, I'd say I'm consistently inconsistent.

I am retired, so I read an average of at least 8 hours a day. Sometimes I think it may not be healthy to read that much. I have several books going at the same time and read what I am in the mood for. I break that up with Netflix. It is a treat when I go somewhere and don't read all day.
