michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Hi! I'm Michelle, wife, mother, geek, and homeschooler. ;) I've been on Goodreads for a few months now, and it just occurred to me to look for a homeschooling group.

I have seven kids -- aged 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, and 13 -- and we have been homeschooling since the beginning. We live in the great state of Texas (w00t!), where men and homeschoolers are free. ;)

We took a year off of formal schooling to try out unschooling last year, but the kids did not enjoy it, so we're back to something a little more structured. We're using a combination of living books, an online grammar course, and Switched on Schoolhouse, plus Alpha-Phonics for the beginning readers.

Mary Findley | 19 comments Hi, Michelle. I am new to this group myself, and fairly new to Goodreads, too. I expect the homeschooling moms are busy with their startups, establishing their routines. We are post-homeschoolers, since our kids are all in their twenties, but I have known very few people who homeschooled all their children from the beginning and stuck with it. So impressed! Do you have groups in your area that you can get together with and do things? We were so isolated, in a very rural area in PA, and I wish I could have interacted with other homeschoolers more.

michelle+8 (michelleplus8) Hi, Mary!

"I have known very few people who homeschooled all their children from the beginning and stuck with it. So impressed!"

Thanks! My husband was homeschooled, and at this point I really just can't imagine living any other way. :)

We live in a big city, so there are lots of homeschooling groups and classes in our area, and even a family of homeschoolers who live right down the street. We used to hang out with my SIL and her kids, also homeschoolers, but they recently moved away. :(

Mary Findley | 19 comments This does seem to be kind of an inactive group. The ones on Kindleboards is even less active. I wish I knew where to connect with homeschoolers. We have just begun to publish homeschool curriculum, e-books, hoping to be as inexpensive yet comprehensive as possible.

Alba HI ladies, I am rather new to the group as well. I am in Kansas, homeschooling our 3 boys ages 8, 7, and 2. We have homeschooled from the beginning and have tried many different styles and right now we have moved to unschooling and it is going ok so far, but we will see how it continues to go.

My hope to is to try to help you gals get this group active as well, so I guess we will see what happens.

Nice to meet you!

Great, Alba! I keep joining small groups and finding out they have gone dead! Hope we can resurrect this one!

Patricia Herr (patriciaellisherr) | 6 comments I'm new too. :) Just joined Goodreads as a author. I'm a homeschooling mom who lives in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. My girls are 8 and 6, and we have a relaxed, flexible homeschooling style. We're not unschoolers but we're not very strict either...I guess we're somewhere in between. :) Looking forward to connecting with you folks and hearing about some great books. We just finished reading the classic Anne of Green Gables -- loved it!

message 8: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Patricia, welcome! (Not that I'm a moderator or anything, but welcome anyway). A few years back I wrote a play based on Ann of Green Gables for a friend who was struggling with a licensed "professional" script that had little to do with the book. I had never read it before, but it was such fun to write and produce it. We were pretty relaxed with our homeschooling but did a lot of writing and had pretty fat portfolios. I encouraged writing as a Christian school teacher, too. My children all love to write and draw, as do I. I will just post a link to our blog, where yo can see our books and what we write about.

Patricia Herr (patriciaellisherr) | 6 comments I'd be interested to read the play you wrote, sounds like it was fun to create.

I'll trade blog links with you -- here's mine. :)

message 10: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Patricia, the play belongs to a friend who turned it into a musical and has performed it at schools she taught at. She wants to publish it, and then we could all see how it has evolved. I would love to see it performed as a musical myself. Thanks for the link. I will check your blog out!

message 11: by Alba (new)

Alba It has been fun already with the few of us who have spoken up, would you, Mary and Patricia be willing to be friended by me? I would enjoy sharing books we have read, are reading, and plan to read. I look forward to checking out the blog links, I don't have one to share, my husband started a family blog for me and I haven't done much with it yet. Maybe this will encourage me to start again!

message 12: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Alba, if you check my friends list, you will see that I could us more! Happy to have you. I had so much trouble setting up our blog, I cried over it, so I don't blame you for being slow to start. I have been dealing with technology over 30 years, but this blog and forum stuff is making me crazy. Still, I am getting the hang of Goodreads and finding some friends. Hope I can be a friend, too.

message 13: by Alba (new)

Alba Thank you Mary, I will send you a request. This is what I have so far on my blog...http://losblockers.com/

Wow, Patricia, your pictures and story are fantastic! Look at those plucky little girls! Gorgeous photography!

message 15: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Alba, you have a sweet family! Enjoyed your pictures! When we homeschooled in PA, we had to file an affidavit with course plans and goals and get a licensed evaluator to review a portfolio of work each year. We also have a hard of hearing daughter and I had to have a special ed instructor review my course plans for her. It was good discipline, but you make me wish I'd lived in Kansas!

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Herr (patriciaellisherr) | 6 comments Alba, please send me a friend request. :) Mary, many thanks for the compliments!

message 17: by Alba (new)

Alba Thank you Mary, I think blogging would be a more enjoyable way to keep records. I am so glad that homeschooling laws are so laxed here in Kansas...at least for the time being.

message 18: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Blogging might be just the thing for record-keeping. Sounds great!

message 19: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Herr (patriciaellisherr) | 6 comments Alba,

Wish homeschooling laws were relaxed everywhere. When we lived in MA, the school officials used to try to put us through the wringer. Would have to constantly remind them that we knew the laws and our rights.

message 20: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments Patricia, we had one school district that tried to do that to us in PA. Sent a ton of forms to fill out. I sent them right back and told them there were no such requirements in the homeschool law. Never heard another peep. MA must be really tough, considering the state of the state. God guide you!

message 21: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Herr (patriciaellisherr) | 6 comments Hi Mary, our district was a pain -- we live in NH now, where the laws are supposedly tougher, but it feels much more relaxed here than it did in MA.

message 22: by Mary (new)

Mary Findley | 19 comments So glad you are having a better experience, Patricia! Homeschooling is hard enough without government grief! Sometimes it is just a matter of reasonable expectations and rules that make sense and help instead of persecute you.

Mary Findley | 19 comments Hey, homeschooling moms, question for you! Would you be more likely to consider buying e-books for your children if they came with discussion/review questions or activities? BTW I have a quiz for my YA Medieval Suspense book Hope and the Knight of the Black Lion here on Goodreads, which is on the historical background/customs of the book. I would appreciate it so much if you would check it out. (Not necessary to read the book to take the quiz, but all the answers are in the book!) Most high school or even JR High should be able to read it, though it does have some violence. Thank you!

Mary Findley | 19 comments Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We were able to spend time with our daughter in Tulsa OK. Turkey, Muppet Christmas Carol, and I got a start on my Graphic Novel Project, the Alexander Legacy, with classic lit characters in Victorian England solving a mystery. My husband got a horrid cold but finally seems to be recovering.

Patricia Kemp Blackmon (itstimetoreadmamaw) | 2 comments Hello I go by Patricia aka Mamaw. I use to homeschool but now my 5 daughters are all grown and gave me 14 grandchildren and number 15 on the way. I have a book blog for Christian Fiction and Children's book reviews/interviews/giveaways. Thought some of the giveaways for Children's and Christian YA books would benefit your homeschooling.
I have a giveaway going until 3/20 for a darling book.

Karyn Tripp (karyntripp) | 6 comments Hello! I thought I would take a minute to introduce myself. I homeschool my kiddos ages 8, 5, and 2. We love reading and I love finding more good books to read. I try to keep my goodreads profile pretty current, and have hundreds and hundreds of books on there.

I would love to know favorite books that you have loved and been influenced by. Also, what is everyone reading now? :).

I am reading the Carlotte Mason Companion, and the MoneySmart family system, both are very interesting books!

I saw someone posted a while back about wanting to connect with other homeschoolers, the best way I have found is through yahoo groups and blogs. I have found lots of support through both.

I write a homeschool blog:

Check it out if you are interested.

Have a great day everyone!

message 30: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Hey, I'm here too! We have two younger homeschoolers aged 5 (just now reading easy readers) and a 2 year old. We live in NC where it's very homeschooler friendly and I'm looking to connect with other families about books that you've enjoyed! I thought we'd follow a Waldorf approach but that proved too rigid for me. Open to any great ideas!!

I love the Read out Loud Handbook; I found it very inspiring!

message 31: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Hello! Here's another introduction:

I'm homeschooling my kids ages 10 and 5. We've been using the Ambleside Online curriculum for a number of years and really like it. Their website has lots of suggestions for books to read with your children or for independent reading, when they get older.

I've also read the Charlotte Mason Companion and try to re-read sections as needed to refresh my memory and re-inspire me.

I'm currently reading a book about ancient Alexandria. Looking forward to reading your book recommendations in the coming year...

message 32: by Robin (new)

Robin Stevenson (robinstevenson) Hi Karen, Ashley and Tracy,
Nice to see some people introducing themselves here so I thought I would too... It'd be great to see this group get busier ;)

I live on the west coast of Canada and have an 8 year old son who is a home-learner. We're pretty child-led and unschooly in our approach. I'm a very avid reader (though not so good about updating my goodreads lists) and I also write kids/YA fiction.

I read anything from literary fiction to mysteries to memoir. My son is currently enjoying lots of comics and graphic novels, as well as sci-fi and fantasy stuff. Always looking for suggestions as we both go through books rather fast!

message 33: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Nice to meet you mamas! I'll definitely try to check out your suggestions. Personally--I'm reading Barbara Kingsolver's The Lacuna right now, just picked it up yesterday. I believe parts of it take place here in Asheville. Seems like there are quite a few authors here in this group, maybe you'll reinspire my habit of journal writing which sadly died with motherhood and the infinity of information to be found online. How do you carve out time to write?

message 34: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Ashley, I recently (just this week) started doing something called Story Slices (the idea came from writer & writing coach Laurie Wagner) where you just write up a few lines that describe something memorable from your day. You can either write them as you experience them (carry a little notebook, etc.) or think over your day in the evening and choose something to write. They aren't crafted -- just jotting things down. It gets me writing and reinforces paying attention and noticing whatever is happening around me. It's much less daunting than trying to carve out a big chunk of time to write.

message 35: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I just tagged the books I've read with my children over the last several years with "homeschool" in my profile. At some point, I'll try to put them into more specific categories, but thought if anyone was interested, they could check it out.

message 36: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Thanks for sharing the book list and story slice ideas! The story slices idea is being shared for now with my daughter and I both working on our journal habit. Tracy I perused your homeschool list and found a few books to add to my list, thank you!

I also found the Charlotte Mason sight; the ambleonside curriculm-free! Very cool, keep the good ideas coming please.

Sara | 1 comments I'm new here and glad to find some other homeschool moms! I have one child, a son 15. We live in the Orlando FL area. We have always homeschooled and love it!
I love to read and have recently become a blogger and book reviewer. I'd love to help any homeschool moms who might be writing to get some exposure. my website is www.lostislandofbookreviews.blogspot.com I'd love to connect with everyone. I do a lot of giveaways also.

message 38: by Ashley (new)

Ashley cool, I'll check it out! Daughter just finished her first chapter book solo! Couldn't be prouder over here. The Boxcar Children #1. She cruised until the last chapter and then didn't want to finish it. What?!

message 39: by Miranda (new)

Miranda Hi, I'm Miranda. I'm new to the group and new to homeschooling. I have two boys who are currently in public school but I'm going to pull them out and start homeschooling them in September. I've been doing a ton of research on homeschool. Just trying to get prepared and figure out what kind of curricula to use.

message 40: by Tina (new)

Tina (tinamama) Hi Miranda! A friend and I do a homeschool podcast, Savvy Homeschool Moms, that you might want to check out. www.savvyhomeschoolmoms.com

Miranda Thanks. I'll check it out.

message 42: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Hi Miranda! How old are your boys?

message 43: by Hazel (new)

Hazel Gifford | 10 comments Hi miranda i added you for goodreads but i wasnt sure how to message you. If you use facebook there are some great pages where parents commu icate all the time. I am not sure how to send them to you, still trying to figure good reads. The one group is called homeschool co-op and freebies. My name will be listed under members. If you want you can add me and i have and you can search my likes for homeschool groups.

message 44: by Miranda (new)

Miranda Thanks Hazel! I'll look for it.

My oldest is turning 10 next week and my younger one is 7. I would pull them out of public school right now but I think that would be to much of a drastic change for them. So I'm trying to just hang in there til the end of the school year (May 29th!!) and not pull my hair out in the process!

message 45: by Miranda (new)

Miranda Robin, that's how I feel with the time. There are so many things I want to do with my boys but have no time for. Plus my husband does a lot of traveling for work and their are times we really want to do with him, but we can't because of school.

message 46: by Miranda (new)

Hazel Gifford | 10 comments I felt the same way when my oldest wa in kinder, he is a senior now. Btw i have a 14 yearold and a six year old boy. My oldest ds just told me the other day he is so greatful he homeschooled. He feels like he really had a chance to enjoy his child hood. My six year loves homeschooling, he is my pumpkin. I can truly understand why you want to wait, i suggest you find some homeschooling groups amd get him acquianted with other homeschooling kids.

message 48: by Ali (new)

Ali Dent (allident) | 1 comments JUmping in on this discussion ladies. It's good to hear your stories. Hazel I have a graduating senior and a 14 year old son still at home. My daughters who were home schooled are 26 and 27. Whew! Time flies. My senior, James told me just this morning that he is so glad he was home schooled. He said it gave him freedom to think about things when otherwise he might have been caught up in the social pressures of high school. HE said when he was 13-15 he was trying to figure himself out and he felt quite awkward and if he had been under social scrutiny by his peers it would have made life difficult for him.
I thought this was a neat insight but then again, I am his mom:)

message 49: by Hazel (new)

Hazel Gifford | 10 comments Ali , yes time does fly! What an insightful young man. Our children would have been good friends. My son does not like to get caught up with the "smiths and the Jones" saga. He also does not like the pressure of dating and the antics that come with it. He tells me life is dramatic enough. Btw nice meeting you.
