humph. not the infomation i wanted...
P & P is one of my favourite books. It is well written, it is witty, has good characters and a happy ending. Highly recommended. Enjoy!!
I've learned to not listen to what other people say about books. Usually the worse the reviews on amazon are, the better the book will be :pP&P is definitely one of my all time favorites. Borrow it from the library, that way even if you don't like it you won't be paying for it.
One of J.A.'s best books! Definitely read it!
Regardless of whether you don't currently feel up to it, at some point in your life, you definitely should read this book. I think it's important, especially for classics, to understand just what the fuss is all about. I would definitely say that you should read it at your first opportunity.
I don't think you should read a book just because it's a classic but P&P is definitely worth it. P&P and Emma are my favorites from JA.
I didn't like Sense and Sensibility, but loved Pride and Prejudice. S&S is too depressing, while P&P is witty and downright funny in spots. Let us know what you decide.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm in a literature class of supposed "classics" that (IMO) suck and I instantly reached for P&P for relief! I love the language and it makes me laugh. :)
Fabulous book, with great insight into people and their motives. Jane Austen, despite her sheltered life, knew a lot about what makes people do what they do. A great study in social norms of the time, and a timeless love story. As a great companion, watch the mini-series starring Colin Firth as Darcy.
I really liked this book, but if you're not used to the writing style (from the 1800s), you may have some difficulty. I did with Jane Austen's books. I watched the BBC P&P production many times before reading the book and I was better able to follow the written story. Her books are always good reads, though.
Yes,Yes,Yes! I absoutely loved Pride and Prejudice. Reading it was a little more work at first than reading a contemporary novel however it was well worth the effort!
I have no shame in admitting I enjoyed it all the more for watching the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth ...a number of times... before reading :-D
Yes, it's a classic, you had to read it, and then if you don't like it, it's ok. But I really enjoy reading it, and I thought I wouldn't like it but it's impossible not to like Lizzy Bennet.
This is one of my favorite books! I went into it not knowing if I would like it, but I fell in love with the characters - especially Mr. Darcy! Read it with an open mind and you will not be disappointed!
Pride and Prejudice is one of the greatest works of any period. Its well written and a "must read" for fans Jane Austen. I also enjoyed Sense & Sensibility as well as Persuasion. Read it; I know you'll enjoy it.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites. With a lot of classics, sometimes it helps to watch the movie first, then read the book. I recommend the 1995 mini-series with Colin Firth. That travesty with Keira Knightly seems to have been based on something with only a passing resemblance to Pride and Prejudice. It's a good read.
I have read Pride and Prejudice more than 20 times over the years. If you are not used to reading 19th century literature, it may take you a while to get into the writing, but it is worth it. P&P makes the top of most classic lists for a reason. It is one of the best romances of all time and Austen was a master at using caricature and satire. I do humbly disagree that the Keira Knightley movie is not worth watching. That movie did more to generate interest in Jane Austen than any other version. The 1995 mini-series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is excellent if you have 7 hours to devote, but the 2005 movie shows the romance in a way that no other P&P adaptation has done.

But I highly recommend it.

Lindsay wrote: "I have no shame in admitting I enjoyed it all the more for watching the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth ...a number of times... before reading :-D"Colin Firth is a completely legitimate reason to watch anything.
I must also agree that watching the 2005 film adaptation with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFayden(sp?) is not a good venture into the story.
Other than that, the book is fantastic. It's the most popular of all her novels for good reason...it's light, funny, romantic, paints an idyllic picture of the English countryside, and who doesn't like stories with clever girls and handsome, rich men? I recommend reading P&P to segue your way into Austen and Romantic literature. Sense and Sensibility is too angsty for a first Austen read.
This is my favorite love story ever written. I say watch the BBC version with Collin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and then read it. That's what I did and I get giddy with all the romance when I watch the move! it's my very favorite. BEST MOVIE (made from a book) EVER!!!!
Georgia wrote: "lots of people say this is like Sence and Sencibility and that's bad..."It does help improve your spelling, however.
No, absolutely not watch Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightly its very similair to the book, however if you insist on reading or love to read then read.
