New review by Dean Fetzer: "the best book I've read all year"

“Operation Dark Angel” is a story of what might very well be the ultimate terrorist attack.
Quite contrary to what the doomsayers have been predicting ever since, the Antichrist does not appear in a tempest of fire, brimstone, and blood. He is born as a male infant named Nicolaitanes by a human female. The only thing extraordinary about him is his amazing charisma and intelligence. With these he virtually shoots up the sectors of the wealthy and powerful and secures a position of wealth and power for himself. Once he does, he proceeds to carry out Operation Dark Angel.
Operation Dark Angel is basically a complex and enormous terrorist attack involving various cells operating all over the world. At first, the terrorists carry out their master plan smoothly. But things suddenly begin unraveling when high-ranking members of the terrorist organization suspect Nicolaitanes to be more evil than they ever could have imagined. Meanwhile, unlikely forces fighting on the side of the good are brought together to stop Operation Dark Angel. A battle eventually erupts between the two sides. Tragically, all their efforts are for naught because Nicolaitanes ultimately wins when he plunges the world into a war from which he intends to emerge as supreme overlord.

Wonderful characters who have haunted me throughout the reading, even to the point that one invaded my dreams.
I found myself frequently thinking of the story and wondering what would happen next when I wasn't reading it.
A book I spent my days so looking forward to pick up again.
A treasure for thriller fans.
And thank-you to Roz Morris, author of MY MEMORIES OF A FUTURE LIFE, for this review on Amazon:

This review is from: The Survival of Thomas Ford (Kindle Edition)
A story about a man who survives a crash in which his wife dies. But the driver who caused the collision is hunting him down because he is worried about being identified.
From this apparently straightforward premise comes a story that is tense and gripping - but far from simple. The characters Thomas must outwit are unhinged, amoral lowlifes, from a milieu that gentle Thomas has never before had to encounter - like most of us who live normally and quietly. This gives the novel a universal, mythical quality. This is a story of survival, but not just physical escape. It is a crawl back to life after a clash with barbarous, feral forces. It is also a clash with conscience - if someone died beside you, and you feel responsible, how do you survive? Do you even deserve to? How can you ever redeem yourself to live a normal life? Thomas finds himself in a world where men have no consciences as he does battle with his own.
But this is no story of navel gazing. The plot works on a literal level as well as a symbolic one and the characters are solid as much as they are embodiments of forces. The prose is bold and unfancy, yet supple enough to connect with the vast and elemental. Although there is a good deal of violence, which Logan doesn't shy away from, he has a knack of not showing it to you, but still giving you the impact of the experience. So a cat watches mesmerised as something horrid and bloody goes on in a family's living room (itself another level of irony only visible when you step back and analyse). I frequently found myself rereading pages - not because of any problem with clarity, but because a phrase drummed in my head long after the plot had dragged me past, demanding a second look to enjoy it again. The storytelling is effortless, the echoes are long lasting. Do read it.

"1998 – On-line auctions are the new craze, and tech writer and vineyard co-owner Cissy Rayburn is joining the frenzy. New friend Amy is teaching Cissy and old friend Julia how to navigate the wonderful world of eBuy. But while the ladies were at Cissy’s house on the computer, someone broke into Amy’s and Julia’s houses.
Could it have something to do with the weekend estate sale they all went to? The other big buyer at the auction was Rose Jackson, retired county government employee and on-line auction shark. Cissy wonders if Rose’s house was broken into as well. But when she stops by Rose’s house, she finds that not only was the house broken into – so was Rose’s head.
Now Cissy is once again hip-deep in a murder investigation, but with the added aggravation of providing a temporary home for Rose’s untrained and obnoxious chihuahua Paco. Both identifying the killer and finding a permanent home for this awful little dog seem like impossible tasks."

My Fiction novel, "Halfway To Nowhere", is a Literary Fiction story set in contemporary San Francisco.
Here's the blurb:
"Alex Smith is an ordinary joe lost in an ordinary world, a cruel and dreary place where nothing turns out as planned. He works the night shift at a dead end job that barely pays the bills, his sleazy landlord swindles any money that's left over, his apartment only a tiny box with roaches for company. His absent father suddenly walks back into his life asking for redemption, his friends gone or unavailable. What makes matters worse is that Alex is taunted by recurring dreams where he wakes to an empty world, where there is no one left around but him, nothing but empty streets and an empty city. Put simply, his life is a boat without oars in a sea of shallow water, and all he wishes for is some inkling to life purpose, a direction to happiness and self worth.
When Lexi, a recently impregnated prostitute crosses his path, he invites her to stay with him for a time until she can get her own life together. This small act of kindness will send him down a bizarre spiral of events that will change his life in a way he never could have predicted, and into a shape that could only come from life itself."

5.0 out of 5 stars First Class!!, 28 Jun 2012

This review is from: The Survival of Thomas Ford (Kindle Edition)
The Survival of Thomas Ford attracted me a while back for two main reasons - the title and the cover. Both hinted at darkness and mystery and left me intrigued as to what the story within was all about. Having now read the novel I can see how fitting is the word 'survival' and how pertinent is the use of shadows, dark and light on the cover. I shan't give away any of the plot here but I will speak about the writing. I must confess to not quite knowing how the author has achieved to create scenes and characters that appear more real and memorable to me now than when I first read the novel a couple of weeks ago. It is that fact alone that has led me to write this review for, initially, as soon as I read the book, I felt a little disappointed in it, let down in some way. Now I love books and I will defend books I love to anyone. Perhaps it was because I had read it in amongst some of the nineteenth century classics? Who knows? What I believe now though is that I was disappointed not WHEN I finished it but BECAUSE I'd finished. I had somehow turned into the reading equivalent of a sulky child who is angry at ice-cream because he's eaten it all and there is none left! The descriptions, the dialogue, the set-pieces and the pace are all first class. You can see the characters, you can hear them, and you will most certainly remember them. All I can say is read this book. If it has the same effect on you as it did on me then great. And if it doesn't, it's nobody's fault - and there is always ice-cream!

Also stories in there about a very strange circus at the edge of the known world; a young, wounded man just returned from World War 1 who encounters even more evil when he gets home; an old man who tries to recreate a lost love; and a meeting between a pig and a wolf on a moonlit hillside...
So it won't be short of variety!
The final story in the collection, called Sometimes All the World Comes Down, was originally published by Picador in a paperback anthology that was sold in most countries of the world (Japan to South America, Africa to Europe, America to Australia), edited by Ali Smith and Toby Litt...Muriel Spark (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), Fay Weldon, David Mitchell, and Maggie O' Farrell also had stories in that anthology (which was called NEW WRITING 13, more info on my website www.johnaalogan.com)
I suppose I've always wondered ever since if I'd do anything more with that story, and now I find that it ends the collection as though it was always meant to do so (the other 9 stories in the collection have not been published anywhere before).
I should also give a wee mention here that The Survival of Thomas Ford is a finalist in the eFestival of Words Best of the Independent Ebooks Awards
In this category: The "I've Been Shyamalaned" Award for Best Twist

Death is what you make it. . . .
Eleanor never wanted to leave the daughter she loved so much. The overpowering urge to wander -- to search, without knowing what she sought -- drove her away. She left little Cassidy in her family's loving care. But Cassidy and the others died in an accident before Eleanor could find her way home.
Now, they are all reunited, in an afterlife where nothing is truly lost: places once loved may be revisited, memories relived and even shared. Surely this is a place where they can understand and heal. And yet, the restlessness that shaped Eleanor's life still haunts her in death. Somehow, she must solve the mystery of her life -- or none of them will be at peace.

Looking for support, people to review and just some general help getting noticed for my first book A Mediocre Man.
A modern fiction novella charting the demise of an ordinary man in a world obsessed with gossip and rumour.
Given recent news stories in the UK: I should point out that the idea for this book was conceived, and large portions written, well before the events that are currently playing out in the media.
Thanks for reading.

A very talented author posted this synopsis and I loved it:
"Jameson Quinn is sick of the bright lights, fast living, and self-centered people of the big city. After a bad night with her jerky boyfriend, she throws in the towel and leaves it behind for a new life in the tiny town of Ruth Valley.
But first, she steals her boyfriend's favorite shoes.
In Ruth Valley, Jameson finds more than she expected--a welcoming community, a handsome sheriff, and new friends. But all is not as it seems. Jameson discovers that the residents have a strange habit of disappearing in the middle of the night, never to be heard from again, leaving families and friends behind. As Jameson delves deeper into the disappearances, her investigation does not go unnoticed. She must solve the mystery or become one of the next Ruth Valley Missing.
The Ruth Valley Missing is a book written by a writer that I really admire. Her protagonists are a lot like mine -- down to earth, comical, sarcastic, relatable. If you like mysteries and humor, you're going to love this book. And today you can get it as a free ebook on Kindle. Do it. You won't regret it."

Here is a link to my book, Independence.
When fed-up Claire Coulter leaves her alcoholic marriage of ten years, and her hot-tempered, man-hating best friend, Brenda, falls in love again, their twenty-year friendship is the only thing real in which they rely and trust. Claire's challenges include raising her two small children, standing firm against her manipulative soon-to-be-ex-husband, and the new employee in her department, Billy, that challenges her ideas of eternal singlehood. Brenda tries to overcome her loneliness and anger toward her unfaithful ex-husband then finds herself in a relationship that challenges her morals and boundaries. Through friendship, laughter, and tests of character, both women seek freedom from their baggage and pasts as they embrace their independence.

What happens to a musician when Music dies?
The Day the Music Died is a story of a young man's loss of the only thing in his life he had ever truly loved - music. Academia and mainstream culture (read: 'Bullshit') have destroyed it and subverted it to the point where great music can be hidden from society and nonsense can pass for greatness. For the next ten years, void of any centering influence in his life, Cameron Forsyth lives in a life of delusion and make believe; looking within himself in order to decipher the difference between talent, inspiration and acts of sheer chance, in the hope that he may resolve what was to him an event tantamount to musical deicide.
