I will second Alana's suggestion.
It's the first of a series and the only one out but a great read by itself and the ending is beautifully done. You know there will be more but this "chapter" of the story is finished. I've read the book and listened to the audio which is wonderfulThe best book I have read this year. I'll happily read it again.
I will third A Discovery of Witches, an amazing book!I have also heard a lot about these books but I haven't read them yet.
Nora Roberts actually has a great trilogy out about witches, I devoured the books.
also this is a great series!!
It is cute and mysterious and laugh out loud funny. A really good series you will love!

I read the Mayfair Witches YEARS ago! I might have to re read them but I think I am going to start reading A Discovery of Witches. I need a little break from the vamps :-) I did read the Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith too. Still young at heart :-) Thanks for all the recommendations..Keep them coming! :-)
There is a vampire in A Discovery of Witches (just so you know). More than one. The heroine is a witch and she is a really wonderful character - the last of a long line of witches. Her family are of course witches and their historical home is populated with ghosts of witches from the past. This book really goes into history, science, and pulls it together in a fascinating story that delves deeply into the history of witchcraft. It's a story to be savored for every detail. I should mention it is an amazing story of REAL love.
This is going FAR back, but I really loved the Alanna series by tamora pierce. It isn't witches exactly but LOTS of magic and such. It is set in medieval times so that depends on your taste. I don't like to do this on forums like this but I did write the last witch series which does involve lots of magic plus vamps and weres and greek mythology set in modern era.
I have never read many good witch books. So many ways people can write the magical abilities and such of a witch. So I'll have to check out A discovery of Witches! You all make it sound so good!
Hahaha- I have that one on my TBR list- just because of the name alone. Gotta love reading about another Alana- even if she spells it slightly different
hehehe. It's a fab book! It's actually what inspired me to really start writing down my short stories and books. I think I was 12/13 at the time. There is even more magic when Diana or is it Diane. Been so long! Comes into the picture in the next four books after Alanna.

There are some very funny witches in
and for Magic I love the Celta series. They all have familiars basically

Absolutely agree PA> I think The Witching Hour in particular is Anne Rice's best novel.I'd really recommend the series, especially for readers who like an intense, multi-layered, evolving story.

I read
and I absolutely love the new spin on witches and vampires. Witches are my first love, but I like vampires too and I loved how this book connected them.
The Circle of Three series by Isobel Bird is really good. It is a YA series but it is about a group of friends getting involved in Wicca and what happens during their year and a day study of Wicca and they must decide if they want to become initiated witches. Good books, I have read them four times. There is a total of 15 books, usually around 230 pages each.
I liked the Kelley Armstrong women of the other world series. The books shift main characters and several of the books are focused on witches. Even when the witch isn't the main character they are still in the other books. I really enjoyed almost all of the books. There were a couple I could take or leave but none that were terrible. I just finished Waking the Witch and it was good. The world Armstrong creates is believable. You don't have to read all the books but I love when you get to see the progression of the characters throughout the series. I also second (or third) the Mayfair witches series by Anne Rice. These were the first PN books I read. I still love them. I made my husband take pictures of me outside of the First Street house when we went to new Orleans on out honeymoon. I look like a stalker.
Hey Kate, i might be going on a big holiday to the US next year (fingers crossed) and really want to go to N.O. Is the First Street house the house where Anne Rice used to live? I thought I read somewhere it was opened to the public now. Any recommendations on other good stuff to see for PNR lovers? thanks. what a great place for a honeymoon!!

Anne Rice did live in the house at First and Chestnut at one time but doesn't anymore. I was so excited to see if it was as beautiful as it was in my imagination in the the Mayfair witch series. It was really fun. We saw the house in the French Quarter where Louis and Lestat were and we went to Lafayette and St. Louis Cemetery. We ate at the Commander's Palace and went to the Ponchartrain Hotel. (didn't stay there, though $$$!) We did all kinds of fun Anne Rice stuff, kind it made own own tour. We havent's been back since Hurricane Katrina but I can't wait to visit again. It was so beautiful.

This is actually a YA book but its really good and there is enough angst to make it sexy. ;-)Its gotten really high reviews so hope you enjoy it!
The Southern Witch series
I just finished this series a little while ago and absolutely loved it. The authors blog says that there will be more in the series
Also the Enchanted Inc series was good. The female lead is not a witch but shes completely immune to magic. The main hero was different then most PNR in that he's not a bad boy type, but more a goodie goodie. Not usually the type I go for but I had a crush on him by the end. This was a really cute series.
Enchanted Inc. Series
Annette Blair has written some brilliant books about witches. There are two trilogys, the second is more magical than the first:
I totally agree about the Anne Rice Mayfair witches! Those books are crazy strange. I loved them. I read them a long time ago though, so this thread has me wanting to read them again!Oh, and Kate -- totally jealous you went to all the locations!! I've always wanted to go to New Orleans. Maybe someday.

It really was fun. I was a total geek stalker. My husband humored me. I'm not sure he knew what he was getting into when he agreed on New Orleans for our honeymoon. I would love to go back but now we have these pesky children running around! It was soooo beautiful and the food was amazing. Ahh, memories.
I would kind of love for witches to be the next hottest thing in PNR. I think it's less explored than weres and vamps!
