When i first started reading the book Chains, I hated it. I thought it was dry and boring. It was really hard for me to get into as well as to enjoy this book. It didnt really have the adventure parts that I was hoping for and was more of a mellow book about African American history. With that said, I can understand why a teacher would choose this book to read for their class. Because it is more approperiate than other books that they would read about this time period.
When I first started to read "Chains" I did not like it at all. The book was very hard to get in to and was not very appealing to read. I had trouble continuing to read it because it was really "bland." However after finishing the book I came to the conclusion that it is a great book to read if you want to learn about slavery in the U.S. I would use this book to teach my students about this time period and what life was like back then for Whited and Blacks.
Well, I can't even find words to totally describe this story! I think it is a bit violant... but very accurate. It taks beatings, whippings, and punching women in the face, all just in the Lockton Residence itself, it is a great, heart-touching book. I think this book would be good for older kids, about 5th-6th grade! It introduces readers to the real horrors of slavery. It also has a pretty good story line. I think it can bring to life the hardships of Isabel being branded, beaten with a riding crop, smacked and beaten, locked in a potato bin and Mrs. Lockton. We learn about these hardships in a unit in social studies but to really see it and understand is another thing. I think the book is pretty good. It starts out slow and is negative... but over all a good educational book!
