I was given an audiobook version of the latest Adam Dalgliesh mystery but I've never read any PD James before. It's the 14th in a series and I was wondering, can I dive straight in or will I be confused if I haven't read the previous books?

Ten | 34 comments I've read Death In Holy Orders which I see now is #11. I hated it, it was boring and not much of a mystery at all . I don't know whether it's because I didn't know the character and therefore didn't "get" some parts, but I doubt it'd make the boredom go away.

Oh dear, that doesn't sound very promising :-(

I read this one (the private patient) having never read any PD James before and it wasn't confusing or hard to follow but it was dull and I wouldn't read any others.

I think I'll give it a miss then. Thanks for saving me from dreariness!

I've never managed to get into PD James' Dalgliesh series, despite liking the TV adaptations. I've just seen Death Comes To Pemberly on amazon, though, so I might try that. Familiarity with the characters might help me get used to her writing style, and apparently she doesn't wreck the whole Pride and Prejudice thing. I'm usually over-suspicious about spin-offs, but this one seems interesting, anyway.

I saw that too - it seems a strange thing for PD James to have a go at. I would never have had her down as a P&P fan. However the reviews are quite good so it might be worth trying.
