RandomAnthony | 14536 comments How is the new McDonald's coffee, Sheila?

message 52: by Sheila (new)

Sheila It's drinkable - not spectacular, but drinkable.

I like the vanilla lattes myself.

message 53: by Sheila (new)

Sheila I went to Starbucks yesterday trying to decide if I was going to sacrifice my chance for (more) caffeine and get one of their salted caramel hot chocolates. "Chocolate? Salt? Oh yeah."

I asked if I could get one with a shot of some sort of coffee or expresso or something and they informed me that they already offer that - as an expresso truffle or something? So I got that instead.

I'm hooked now. It's everything, AND the caffeine too.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments RA, you're not alone. I bow to the diet coke gods early in the morning, too. I don't drink coffee. It doesn't agree with my stomach. But I need caffeine in the morning. The only time I ever drink coffee is when there's no diet coke (or carbonated caffeine or tea) around for me to drink. Then, and only then will I drink it - black, over ice...

message 55: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Krispy Kreme's Bold coffee is probably just this side of legal stimulant. I swear, I had flashbacks to my meth days. It's some powerful fucking coffee!

*mmmm, doughnuts*

message 56: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Oh, Sheila... you just hit on one of my pet peeves... it is ESPRESSO. It's not eXpresso. It REALLY bugs me when someone who works at a coffee shop gets it wrong.

That salted caramel chocolate espresso thing sounds yummy and decadent, though. Is it super sweet? I don't mind sweet but I hate cloying.

message 57: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 10, 2008 08:34AM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I might try espresso soon, Sarah. I like the idea of doing it as a shot. When you buy it at Starbucks, do they just...I don't know...give it to you like a shot? When I was in Italy they did it like a shot.

Or am i confusing that with another kind of coffee?

message 58: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Thanks for reminding me Sarah. I didn't even think about the word when I used it. I really do know better.

And yes, you can just about chew it, really but, to me anyway, the salt keeps it from being too sweet.

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

RA, you're funny! Yes, it's like a shot. It's really strong that way, though. Do you like cream? I get three shots a day. Either on ice or hot, but always with cream.

message 60: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) I might try that drink, but with only 1/2 the sweet stuff. And extra shots of espresso. That might help cut the sweet.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I need a mocha. And maybe some aspirin, too. I did NOT sleep well, thanks to cranky old cat and snoring husband.

Soooo tired...

Ungh. Mocha, yes. With two shots.

message 62: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I want to try one of these espresso things.

Today I got coffee from the coffee shop at work. They asked me if I wanted "strong" or "mild". I went with strong.

Italkedreallyfastforawhileafterthat.

message 63: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments RA, the milder coffees have more caffeine in them, it's all in the roast. I prefer the dark roasts for the flavor, but if you're in it for the caffeine then you should stick to mild.

message 64: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Fuck, Logan, I didn't know that. Thanks. Coffee is too goddamn complicated!

message 65: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments But it's so rewarding in its complication! A whole new world of tastes and cracked-out-itude.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

I love espresso, RA... I'll make you have some in Chicago.

But let's face it, coffee -- like hard alcohol -- is an acquired taste. So just sit your ass down and start acquirin'.

No one is born liking this swill. Just man up and quit being such a coffee wuss.

message 67: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ingenting) "RA, the milder coffees have more caffeine in them, it's all in the roast."

They do? I would have thought the opposite was true. I had better learn to embrace the dark roast.

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

RA, did you ever explain what was going on with your avatar?

You don't, like, have your hands on the back of your wife's head and she's, um... Is this a family website?

message 69: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You see, I could man up easier, David, if it weren't for all the complicated coffee rules. If I could just get the one kind at Dunkin Donuts or whatever this would be much easier. But no...there's entire beans that you grind yourself...and...like seventeen different kinds at the goddamn coffee shop at work...I guess Logan has a point, I should embrace the possibilities...

Maybe I'll get try espresso tomorrow.

I still don't understand why people would drink decaf, though.

message 70: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ingenting) Wait until RA sees message 84.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Decaf, like Sartre's endless regression, is absurd.

message 72: by Lori (new)

Lori RA, have you tried the latte freezes at Costco yet? Orgasmic!

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm waiting for you answer, RA...

Or -- was it time for another photo?

message 74: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I was going for "punched in the face" but I've, uh, learned a lot about different people from their reactions to the avatar...

And a lot of you have dirty minds. I've kept a list.

I'm not even going to think about iced coffee yet, Lori...I'm still getting the hot coffee thing down, I don't need any more options:)

message 75: by RandomAnthony (last edited Nov 11, 2008 05:06PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, and actually, David, as I took the photo one of the puppies had just bitten my stick...

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

Was it slathered? Sometimes the viscosity of the slathering medium can prevent serious injury.

message 77: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Slathered? Yes. With beef gravy, unfortunately.

message 78: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 11, 2008 05:12PM) (new)

Our conversation is suddenly more homoerotic than the bath scene in Spartacus.

SEE??? No one ever thought a puppy thread would turn into this!

Edit* Oh, never mind. This is the coffee thread, but who the hell cares? It's all about dead puppies and slathered sticks sooner or later.

message 79: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (ingenting) The puppies are sleeping now.

Oh, coffee thread?

RA, you should try iced coffee. It's delicious.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

All those puppies do is fucking sleep, sleep, sleep. It's time they got off public assistance and got a job. I'm not paying taxes so that they can bite each other's ears and fart in their sleep all day. (Am I? Oh, hell, I'm sure my taxes have gone for worse...)

message 81: by Lori (new)

Lori You're just bitter. You'd love to have a dog's life. No eyebrows raised when you hump, just a tolerant smile.

message 82: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I suppose I'd love it. Just no spaying or neutering please. That would take all the fun out of my favorite solo hobby.

message 83: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Maybe the puppies need some light roast and a gin chaser before we set then loose on RA/David's slathered member. Seriously, gay porn tonight people.

Not that there is anything wrong with gay porn. sometimes it is a refreshing change of scene.

message 84: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments I love gay porn.

message 85: by Gåry! (new)

Gåry! (garyneill) Of course you do.

message 86: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm with Dan on this one. When at work go regular. Tea is typically milder, and you can add sugar to it if you need. At home add Baileys or Kahlua to your coffee. Fresh ground is the best if you want to go to that extreme, otherwise try some samples from a local coffee shop until you find one you like, and then buy the ground beans from them if you want.

message 87: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Oh, I want some Baileys in my coffee. Now.

message 88: by Katrina (new)

Katrina mmmm...coffee. Gotta go with regular. Generally the more caffine the better, but it just has to be there in mass quantities. I don't function without the stuff. I love to get my hands on a triple-shot Americano with just a touch of vanilla or carmel flavor in it. Then it's almost like plain black coffee with just enough flavor to take the bitter edge off. That's my fix to Starbuck's bitter and burnt coffee.

I love the Bailey's in my coffee too, but can't do that one within 8 hours of work so usually I go with the flavored non-dairy creamers. They still taste good and if I get enough in the first cup at home then I don't have to add more at work to hide the fact that the coffee is nasty there.

message 89: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Coffee is magic.

message 90: by Arminius (new)

Arminius Regular - cream and sugar.

shellyindallas At the store the other day I saw that Starbucks is selling bags of half-caffeinated coffee. I was going to try one, but it was already ground and I have a French Press.

ISN'T THAT EXCITING?!?!

No? Yeah, didn't think so.

message 92: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, somebody please explain to me why I'd want to grind my own beans. I just buy the pre-ground kind of coffee at this point.

shellyindallas Freshness, Anthony. Freshness. I work behind the counter at my friend's bakery one day a week and we have an espresso machine and get our beans from a friend who's a local roaster. He's so serious about that shit, that he said do not pre-grind anything. So, the beans for drip coffee and the beans for espresso aren't ground until it's time to make the coffee. And even then, with espresso, if you have milk to steam he says do that first. The whole--whole bean to grind to shot to customer should be as quick as possible.

I don't know. I know some people don't take that shit as seriously as others. But I know we're stealing coffee business from Starbucks and we're just a little bakery making wedding cakes that you can't even see from the street.

message 94: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
The way I understand it, RA, is that the moment you grind the beans they start to dry up, and the flavor is in the oils inside the beans. If they are ground and brewed immediately, the flavor goes into your java. If ground and allowed to languish for a week, the flavor dissipates into the air.

My brother in law is a roaster/coffee shop owner in Lawrence, KS, and he is serious as shit about this stuff. He always has much more artful and intelligent explanations for me than I'm managing to transpose. But it all boils down to taste.

As I was pouring my first cup of black heaven this morning I was thinking about y'all. Similar to how this summer's "birthday" thread would bring all of you into another daily ritual.

message 95: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Goddamn. Maybe I'll get a little, uh, grinder or whatever. When I bought coffee at Costco I went with Dunkin' Donuts because it was already ground but they had more "whole bean" kinds I couldn't buy because I didn't have a grinder. Thanks, people.

(Oh, and Sally, I'm mailing that package tomorrow...)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Coffee is magic.

I think I just found a new maxim for me.

message 97: by Arminius (new)

Arminius It is not only magic it also has good health benefits.

message 98: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Man, I wish I could find a picture I saw in Nat'l Geographic a while back of the caffeine after it's extracted to make decaffeinated coffee. After seeing it I was totally not suprised at coffee's effect anymore. It looked just like a monstrous pile of cocaine!

message 99: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 347 comments Mindy, do you remember about how long ago you saw it? I have 6 years of Nat'l Geo back issues sitting in my storage closet.

message 100: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Are you going to cart them with you when you move, Logan? Because if you are I'm sure as hell not helping you move.

There is something about old National Geographics...they seem to weigh about 400 pounds.
