Kitten I need something comparable to the Outlander books to read until the newest installment comes out...Does anyone have any suggestions??

Karen Try Niccolo Rising by Dorothy Dunnett, one of the best historical fiction writers ever!

Lisa Thomas Try 'Into the wilderness' Into the Wilderness

I would also suggest, though it is set in the 12th and 13th centuries. Here Be Dragon's, Falls the Shadow and The Reckoning By Sharon Penman, Strong love stories and family saga.

Ahh.... I LOVE Sharon Kay Penman. You'll definitely get more history with her books, but I love history. I totally and completely agree with Jerelyn. When Christ and His Saints Slept is also amazing; it comes before Dragons ... historically speaking. It's a stand alone book ... not part of a series. But! The history is accurate and AMAZING. There's also drama, betrayal, and love. Penman is awesome but different from Gabaldon. It's history rich and makes you think and cry and sometimes laugh. However, the dialogue between Penman's characters and Gabaldon's is different. Again, though, Penman is one of my favorite authors.

Now, you might think I'm off my nut, but .... If you loved the connections between Gabaldon's characters, the dialogue, and reading a series more than the fact that it's historical fiction, you
could try Louise Penny's mystery series. Granted ... it's set in present day Canada and they're mysteries, but she's got the relationships between characters, great character development and witty dialogue. She's another one of my favorite authors.

Gosh! I forgot. If you haven't already given The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley a go, you might love it. I did.

Midwive of the Blueridge is good as well. Midwife of the Blue Ridge by Christine Blevins

Kitten Thank you all for your ideas, I can't wait to check into these books...!!

Lananorris definitely Sharon Kay Penman! Her first and stand alone novel is the Sunne In Splendour. All are equally enthralling and romantic but NOT romance novels. She crafts believable characters to love and "to love to hate". Until OUTLANDER series Penman's books were my favorite of all time...now I'm undecided...

LilaBird I was JUST talking about this in another forum and my firm recommendation is that you try The Muse of Edouard Manet. I am madly in love with Jamie and Claire, like I"m sure all of you are. My favorite scene of ALL TIME is when Claire walks into the shop in Edinburgh and Jamie's facing the other way and he hears her voice and freezes. Aaaahh! It melts me every time I read it.
If you want another couple that will "get" you in the same way, I think you should try Edouard and Emily. They would be a great way to spend your time while you're waiting for more from the Frasers. :)

Kitten I agree, I'm on the 3rd book right now! Thanks for your comment....

I definitely agree! Penman is marvelous so I hope you are finishing the series about Eleanor and Henry II and their "Devil's Brood." But my all-time favorite historical fiction writer is Dorothy Dunnett. Well, and Patrick O'Brian.

LilaBird I just finished the book I mentioned above and posted my review! It is seriously one of the most amazing books I've ever read. If you loved Outlander, I think you'll be blown away by The Muse of Edouard Manet.

Yay! Enjoy!! :)

Gladys Quintal Diana is my favourite author and a big inspiration for me even though I write Paranormal Romance. Barbara Eskine is a very good Historical Romance writer too:)

Angela I've just started reading Susanna Kearsley's "The Rose Garden" and am REALLY enjoying it, (time travel included)!!!!!

Rebecca The Fever Series by Karen Moning is also excellent. Check those out too

Melissa Read The Bronze Horseman. Very good!!!! I loved it!

MJ Another historical fiction that I loved was Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I also enjoyed the sequel "World without End."

Tracey Anything by Susanna Kearsley. She is a wonderful author. She has a wonderful talent to pull you into the story. I have read almost all of her books. I highly recommend them.

Claire Diana herself recommended the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman on her website the other day, so i tried the first one in the series "Wine of Angels" and really liked it. It was the first 'real' (as opposed to 'e') book i have read since i got my e-reader and it was well worth it. Similar writing, characters and dialogue as Diana's with a ghostie presence in the background which i liked. Merrily reminds me a bit of 'Claire' which was nice too!

Lizbe I would definately recommend reading The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons probably my favorite book(s) of all times! It's a trilogy and absolutely amazing! It was recommended based off of me liking Outlander from several people and I have to totally agree. Also recommended based off of Outlander was Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati really enjoyed this too :) I'd also give The Tea Rose (The Tea Rose, #1) by Jennifer Donnelly trilogy a try. It was great as well & reminded me of all the above as well. Happy reading!!!

Melissa I have been thinking of Reading the Tea Rose trilogy but not sure about it. Is really good like the Bronzehorse man or Outlander, or is just ok? I didn't really like into the wilderness.

If this has been mentioned I apologize but I just read the first two books in the MacKinnon Rangers series by Pamela Clare and really liked them the third book is due out this summer. No time travel, but three brothers, (highlanders) who are fighting for the British during the French and India Wars. I am usually leery of highlander novels some can be gawd awful, but I was pleasantly surprised by these. They definitely have heat. :)

Carolyn Vana Has anyone read the Jack Whyte Skystone series? I just started his new boook about William Wallace called "The Forest Laird" and so far am really enjoying it. Although I loved "Braveheart", this is much more ture to the real William Wallace and still just as interesting.
A good "fix" while waiting for a new Gabaldon book!

Jill I will say a big You must read Into the Wilderness (Wilderness, #1) by Sara Donati , it started off great but ended up surpassing the outlander series for me. I still love Jamie and Claire, but Nathaniel and Elizabeth's story is amazing:-)

Andrea Sara Donati's Wilderness Series! I looved the audio version of Wilderness series. The Bronze horseman and Tatiana and Alexander by Paulina Simons. Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Julie Garwood-The Bride, Jude Deveraux-A Knight and Shining Armour,Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas. I've been told to read and it's on my list:Lynn Kurland's Stardust of Yesterday and A dance through time and Kathleen Given's books.
I'm now reading Karen Marie Moning's book 2 To Tame a Highland Warrior..I like it so far. Book 1 was pretty good too but I heard book 2 and so on are very good.
These are all historical fiction/historical fantasy
