The Infernal Devices discussion
Have you noticed the similarity in the names?

yeah people have different theories on that, i think there's a discussion we had about it under the MI & ID family connections thread.

Didn't Cassandra Clare mention that there is something between Tessa and Clary in one of her interviews?

yeah, i tweeted her abt the names and their similarities, and she said she did do it for a reason. I don't know if it will be more important in the upcoming books.

Palak (Dust and Shadows) wrote: "Didn't Cassandra Clare mention that there is something between Tessa and Clary in one of her interviews?"Yes, she did. She said she couldn't say why their names are similar, because it's a spoiler. But I hope we find out the reason soon.
Clary also said that Tessa looked familiar. I'm thinking Tessa might have worked with Magnus to protect Clary, so she remembers something familiar? Jocelyn picked the name Fray, maybe just making it smiliar to Gray. Or perhaps Magnus suggested it.

If you guys haven't already noticed let me point this out FRAY is NOT Clary's real last name. It should be Fairchild like Charlotte's maiden name. Also Izzy is a lightwood not a Lovelace. Trust me if you haven't read the second ID book then you wont get who is related to who... SO if you read the book you can see who's related to who. But if there is a reason Fray is picked as a last name I would kill to know why.

Fray is not her real name, but anyway CC picked it as fake name. There could be a reason she chose that very one.

Anyway, maybe Tessa had to do with Clary's memories being erased. Maybe she helped out or something.

Okay I'm not sure if anyone has theorized about this yet, but i find it interesting that Tessa's last name is Gray and the GRAY BOOK is the book that Raziel wrote down the laws of the Clave. But i seriously have a hunch that the two are connected.

Have you not read all the TMI books? I can explain it to you , I just don't want to spoil anything if you haven't read them yet.

OOOH that's a good one! I never thought about that, and that would be bad ass ! haha
Palak (Dust and Shadows) wrote: "I've never gotten why Clary's last name is different than her mothers. it doesn't make sense."Typically, a child, who's parents are no married, get's their father's last name.
And also Jocelyn's real name is Fairchild not Fray but she used Fray to cover up her identity when she fled the Shadowhunters.

OOOOHHHH!!! Okay- it makes sense now

I believe cassie said there is no connection between the gray book and Tessa gray.
Elena wrote: "Anyway, maybe Tessa had to do with Clary's memories being erased. Maybe she helped out or something."I think that's it's too! Maybe Jocelyn knew Tessa and used her last name as an inspiration and put Fairchild and gray together. Or Tessa was so helpful she wanted to reward her and decided to use her last name.
I read this online:"Aloysius' grandaughter, Adele shares the same name as Jocelyn Fairchild's mother. Interestingly, he holds a grudge against the Fairchild family.
Aloysius shares the name with Jocelyn Fairchild's grandfather. Ironically, as said above, he holds a grudge against the Fairchild family."
Anyone else find this connection interesting?
Well if her real last name is fairchild maybe her mum new tessa and it was a mix of grey and fairchild- frey

PS nice picture. Will rocks.
I noticed that the author, Cassandra Clare, is a redhead, as is Clary. And Clary's real name is Clarissa, which is sort of a combo of Clare and Cassandra? Anybody notice that?

Fairchild + Gray = Fray :) My teory AND I DIDn'T READ CP2 I'll have or two weeks or a month to have that)

You know the ceremony Jocelyn had for Clary to make her a shadowhunter? With a Silent Brother sworn to secrecy and a female warlock? *SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ CP2* It was Jem and Tessa! That's why Clary said Tessa looked familiar in City of Glass. (This isn't my theory, I saw a comment on YouTube.)
Can someone explain to me how middle names are chosen? In my country you get your father's name as a middle one, so I'm very confused. I feel stupid asking this, but I really don't know.

Aleksiel wrote: "Can someone explain to me how middle names are chosen? In my country you get your father's name as a middle one, so I'm very confused. Anmol wrote: "Aleksiel wrote: "Can someone explain to me how middle names are chosen? In my country you get your father's name as a middle one, so I'm very confused. I feel stupid asking this, but I really don't..."o.O I thought having a middle name was mandatory :D
Some people have middle names and some don't. My nephew has two. In America parents generally choose the name. It could be of some relative or just a name they like.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I still find it weird, but I guess it's just as odd for you how things are where I live :)

You guys are geniuses! Connections that make me most curious:Aloysius > Jocelyn
Henry > Jocelyn Charlotte > Fairchild
Gideon > Alec
Cassandra Clare > Clarissa
Clary's shadowhunter ceremony > Jem and Tessa

What is the connection between them? I've read everything, I just don't remember this, so you won't spoil anything for me :)
I'm pretty sure we'll find out the connecting between Clary and Tessa's last names in TDA since they're supposed to meet.

Chandana wrote: "I'm pretty sure we'll find out the connecting between Clary and Tessa's last names in TDA since they're supposed to meet."I thought they're going to meet in CoHF.
If you read The Last Stand of The New York Institute (the ninth Bane Chronicles book) then you find out the connection.

(Sheepish Smile) That's what I meant. One of the reasons why I'm so eager for the book...I think I have 30 reasons now.
Clary and Tessa'a first meeting is in 'The Last Stand of The New York Institute'. The explanation of how Frey became Clary's last name is there. But yes, Cassie posted a snippet indicating they meet again in CoHF.

Why do you even look at such threads when you basically haven't read anything? This is about the similarities between the characters names in both TMI and TID.

WARNING CONTAINS COLS AND COHF SPOILERS!
In COHF it explains that Fray is a combination of Fairchild and Gray. This is because of Jocelyn's maiden name and the fact that Tessa performed the protection ritual on Clary when she was a baby.

Also, Clary's middle name is Adele, which is the name of Tessa's mother; Adele Starkweather. Perhaps this was done for a reason.

I'm sorry but if you were to read City of Heavenly Fire it describes how the F in Fray is taken from Fairchild and the Ray in Fray is taken from Gray because of Jocelyn's maiden name and Tessa was the one to perform the protection ritual on Clary.

Jocelyn invents the alias "Fray" from a combination of "Fairchild",
her birth name, and "Gray" after Tessa Gray,
who helps her when she flees from Valentine with Clary and goes into hiding.
Later we learn that Tessa Grey's mother, Elizabeth Grey, was actually Adele Starkweather, who was switched at birth with a mundane child

Okay it's stupid but I just noticed it so I thought it'd post it >.<
