Linda Nance is a wonderful author who has started a brand new Facebook page for everyone's promotions. I (and she) hope you'll pop over and start using her site for your promotions. https://www.facebook.com/pages/NEA-Wr...

Thanks for your comments, Sandy and Tim.

Virginia Llorca | 9 comments @Kelliane. Did I mention Absolute Write Water Cooler? It is very genre specific, and it has critique threads and promo threads.I haven't spent much time on it lately, but sometimes they really get into it with each other. Kinda fun. All this promo stuff is boring, takes up too much time, and produces few results. I keep hearing it takes word of mouth and new publication. I get NO word of mouth even from family or friends. They say they enjoy them and don't even bother to review much less spread the word. I am getting very discouraged.

And (TO ALL) if you delete the "he said" she said" portion of the message and just put @Kelliane or whomever, it takes less time and space to get to the heart of the new message.

Norma Budden (normabudden) Well, the time has come...today I begin to write book 2 of my Freedom in Love series, When Love Abides. I'm looking forward to an interesting journey and wonder where my characters will lead me next.

I will still be taking the time to read and review books in the process. I have no intention, whatsoever, of neglecting my new blog and I still intend to promote other authors as I am able.

If anyone is interested, I've written a new blog titled, Chase Travers: Family Man - Heroic Cop and you can read it at http://freedominlove.com

I will still pop in, from time to time, over the coming days. I'm hoping to have my book completed in 2-3 weeks.

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 180 comments Thanks Virginia for the tip on deleting the lead stuff. Sometimes it helps remember what I was going to say...if I get distracted by something or someone else.

I hear you about the family and friends not spreading the word. It does get discouraging at times. Good thing we have fellow indie authors to vent to...they understand our frustrations. The friends I live with don't understand half of what I try to explain to them.

Thanks, everyone, for spending time on our thread. I had no idea if even one person would post, and somehow we now number many and have chalked up 7 pages in fewer days :-)

Norma Budden (normabudden) Yeah, imagine that! 316 messages so far. Who would have thought from a simple hello message? And to think I was skeptical about joining a group for fear it would consume so much of my time. I shake my head in amazement.

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 180 comments Hello Tim,

I think you have a great group of friends. :)

I just found out about this new website from Vincent Lowry of the Goodreads/Authors group.

http://www.genrebuds.com

It gives authors and readers a chance to connect by matching them up with the books they'd like to read. I just posted our book on there. The only issue I ran into was trying to import the Goodreads TBR list from here to their website but hey they are still beta testing it I think. They also give ribbons out for different things. Maybe this might be an answer to our mutual concern of not getting our books out to the readers.

Well, I'm off to spread the word to some more people. I believe I read that if you have a blog and spread the word about GenreBuds they give you some points...but I think spreading the word just might be mutually beneficial to readers and authors.

Lynn

message 322: by mountainmama (new)

mountainmama (jcallenbooks) | 29 comments Lynn, I just tried to import books on there too and couldn't get it to do anything. Since I'm not the author, I don't think it will do me any good to be there. I'm spread so thin now, that it's probably just as well.

Lynn & mama,

Are you telling me that you can get family members to actually read your work? How the heck did you do that? The big response I get from my family is, "I don't really read."

message 327: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 180 comments Sandy,

Well my sister was the first one to purchase our book. She got it for her husband. My ex-husband purchased the book. He read a few pages and made up a different excuse. Does it matter if the book is paid for? :) Tell them it is called support.

My co-author's wife even bought our book for moral support and to have in case he wanted to see it on Kindle.

Virginia Llorca | 9 comments @Sandy. Or they give you the 'I don't own a Kindle' deal when you can read it on just about anything. I tell them you don't have to read it, just buy it to show support. But how could they resist reading my darling stories?

message 330: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Llorca | 9 comments Okay, EVERYONE. Suppose you bought and read a book that you heard about on the Amazon author threads, (or, hypothetically, here) just to be supportive and hope they might reciprocate and they ask you for a review and you think it is so awful you could barely skim through. This person has a zillion 5.0 reviews and I just don't get it. No point, not fun, badly edited. I think the best and most honorable thing is to just not get around to reviewing. What do you think? (Haven't seen the person on here, so stop cringing.)

And surely not either of these beautifully edited and written tomes. That don't sell at all)

First question, did they ask you for an honest review? If so give them an honest review or contact them directly to let them know how you feel about it.

Some books are just not everyone's cup of tea. You could start out that way. Now if they didn't ask for an honest review, then maybe not write one at all. They obviously only wanted to get high marks.

Well something similar happened to me. I decided to say that I didn't find books in that genre appealed to me. So therefore I wouldn't be able to give an honest review.

message 333: by mountainmama (new)

mountainmama (jcallenbooks) | 29 comments @Virginia: There are certain genre that I do not care for, and I can't review something I don't like. I think most authors would appreciate if you just let them know that. If it's something that can be fixed, I let them know that too, but privately.

@Virginia, I'd just let it be. If they keep bothering you for a review, then I'd e-mail them and explain the situation.

Charity Parkerson | 19 comments @Norma I liked your FB page.

As far as getting reviews goes...be a joiner!!
Join everything that you get invited to, even if you don't have time for it. Library Thing is an awesome tool for reviews. Do giveaways. These are just a couple of my ideas. I don't have very many reviews on Amazon, but I have had better luck with other sites. Plus, it's always a good idea to apply for membership in genre specific guilds.
One of the biggest opportunities that has come my way came from me joining a group here on Goodreads that was specific to my genre, but I never once promoted myself. One day, out of the blue, I received a private message from one of the moderators offering to do a group read with one of my books. I don't know if anything works any better than anything else, but I know that I stay far far away from the Amazon forums.

message 339: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 180 comments C.S.,

I couldn't read it all but I get the gist of what being said. I agree it is interesting. I saw an article earlier today that was 'shown' to me by a fellow author, Marla, I didn't get all the way through it either but you might:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/17/tec...

It seems to be one of those Announcements everyone was expecting kind of thing.

Lynn

Lynn Hallbrooks (lynnhallbrooks) | 180 comments Charity,

I think it is best summed up by saying, do what is right for you but it's great to know what your options are so you know what you can pick from.

Mostly, I use the trial and error method. I try it and it either works or it doesn't (for me) but it might for someone else.

I agree about Amazon forums. I know of a couple of great threads but even those have basically fizzled out. I'm even not comfortable with promoting on the threads I started. I've had a couple of silly people pull not so nice things on me. (this is the cleaned up version of how I really feel about that kind of thing) I choose to be the adult and not get ugly but just move on.

Anyway, weather is getting nasty and I need to go to bed soon.

I Have to admit that I find myself ready waaay outside my comfort zone somedays, but I find I enjoy most genres once I find my way into the story. No matter what, I always read and review authors who have done the same for me. I'm slowly catching up with all the owed ones :-)

I find that I really don't pay that much attention to who is or isn't buying or reading my work anymore (though I'm fortunate that most of my family does read my books and even help with my marketing efforts). I keep coming back to one simple truth...a career in writing requires thousands of sales, not a few dozen so the goal is to reach a mass audience...hence, a few stragglers really don't matter :-)

Fascinating stuff, CS. We are living in a volitile world...and as I've always said, depending on other people for your paycheck is the pits. Hence, I'm a huge fan of indie writers because, for better or worse, they are blazing their own path...and succeeding or failing on their own efforts. No publisher is cutting a bad deal for indies :-)

I agree with Tim. I write and promote and keep it moving forward. I don't worry about who does and doesn't read my book. Like I told someone on twitter, this is a marathon, not a sprint. You continue writing and promoting and the reader support will be there. You have to believe that if you want to keep the drive to continue on.
