Hi, Everyone. A Goodreads friend just emailed me information about her site. Looks similar to smashwords (though a little more colorful :-)

http://www.ezread.com/

Anyone with information, good or bad?

We are authors, why not create the magic silver bullet? Seriously, I hear what you're saying. I agree.

Linell Rae Jeppsen | 71 comments Hi Tim and Tee- I had to do a wipe-out on my puter, but that was a couple of weeks ago. Didn't realize that you guys were not showing up- sorry. I really like this thread. Tim...I took a cue from you and Bryden and decided to do a little reviewing in between my own book projects. Then, I heard talk from another thread saying that an author should never be allowed to review another's work, as it is either pandering, or a sorry attempt to sabotage another's work. What do you think? I have given some 5 stars to a couple and a couple of 4 stars, but that is because the work (like yours) was exemplary. Now- am I pandering? (It gets very confusing for me sometimes, you see...) Nel

Linell Rae Jeppsen | 71 comments Hi T...see? I've been lost and out of touch with you guys! Shasta Summer arrived about a week ago, with your pic. Thank you. You will be showcased in January. Nancy Morse, and Jeff Dawson are up now. I see that these posts are going to my e-mail now, so hopefully I'll be stopping in more often.

I enjoy reviewing books Nel and to be honest most of the time I get snowed down, but the way I see it... if you've given an honest opinion of a book, what is the problem.(Better not read one at all if it is genuinely rubbish though) Occasional I get one that is really not my thing at all but I judge it on the content NOT on my preferred taste. I disagree about pandering, if you're just reviewing a book for self gratification then that is a definite no no.

message 515: by Linell (new)

Linell Rae Jeppsen | 71 comments That's my feeling, as well, Tim. I dread the day someone sends me something really bad. I would e-mail them before I posted the review to let them know about my issues, but I WOULD be honest! These other threads I watch sometimes make it seem that anything and everything an author does is suspect. It's a little depressing!

Hi, Tee. Please remind me are we talking about an interview for me or for you? Sorry, but I'm in between writing grant applications and didn't open my box to check. I've been answering guest blogs and interviews for at least three hours a day this week, but I still have quite a few left in my box to handle.

In short, please remind me and I'll move yours to the top of the list :-)

Linell wrote: "What do you think? (about writers doing reviews)"

Nel, I read at least a novel every seven days, some by people I know, some not. I review each and every one, and I try not to worry about how other people feel about that. If all readers would write reviews, we wouldn't all be needing them so much. In short, someone has got to do it, and I will continue to do my part. Are my reviews biased? Probably, but better that than none at all, and I try to make my reviews as informative as possible so at least readers will know what kind of a story to expect.

So, in short, I absolutely think you should review other people's books, as many as possible. We all should, including readers who don't write.

Linell wrote: "...I WOULD be honest!"

Nel, I don't often voice my opinion about this issue and please don't use me as a poster boy for future discussions, but here goes: I don't write bad reviews but I do occasionally NOT write any review. If a book isn't deserving of at least some kind of praise, I'd prefer not to be the ultimate judge.

HOWEVER, I never offer feedback on those bad stories unless it's someone I know well and unless I'm asked. Most writers don't really want to hear negative feedback...and that is their right. So, I praise when warranted and remain silent when not. Besides, I've disliked a lot of books that have sold millions of copies...which clearly illustrates that my opinion is only valid for my tastes.

Linell wrote: "Other threads...sometimes make it seem that anything and everything an author does is suspect. It's a little depressing! "

Nel, I have learned as authors and public figures it's important to support your friends and peers, but it's equally important to keep your head down and never become the lightning rod for any given issue. Of course, we all have opinions but it's best to forget most of them when we're in public forums. Making enemies and welcoming problems when it can impact your reputation, sales, etc... is just not a good idea.

In summary, I wouldn't let other people's issues with authors bother me, and I would never take a side and argue or even state my opinions. There are plenty of people without books and reputations on the line to work those topics out. We're better off to do what we must in the background.

message 520: by Linell (new)

Linell Rae Jeppsen | 71 comments Hi Tim>>thank you for the thoughtful response to my question. I am continuing to do reviews...I feel the same as you. Reviews are huge for writers, both indy and small pubbed, but they are so hard to come by. I want to continue to help out when I can. I was just taken aback by some of the posters opinions...wondered if you had gotten any flak. (sure hope not!)

Thankfully, I haven't had any issues with anyone about my reviews or communications at all, Nel. I think most people recognize that I'm working hard and am supporting an industry and people that I'm passionate about. I also don't insert myself into discussions than can get disagreeable. As previously mentioned, you and I have too much on the line to get involved in personality or opinion issues.

message 523: by Linell (new)

Linell Rae Jeppsen | 71 comments Yes... I just now recieved a less than stellar review from a fellow author...pretty stingy with the stars especially since he admitted he wasn't paying very close attention. Oh well...you ask for someones opinion- you might just get it!

VETERANS DAY

One day each year we set aside to honor the men and women of our armed services. Though today is a moment when we all stand in concert to express our gratitude to our veterans each and every one, don't forget to make time during all your other days to employ them, to encourage them, and to assist them and their families wherever and whenever they might be in need. Soldiers don't make policy, but they do have a policy, a code...to do what they must to keep us safe. Let's adhere to the unwritten civilian code: let's support them in all ways possible, not just today...but each and every day of the year. Tim Greaton

5.0 out of 5 stars A STUPENDOUS, FANTASTIC READ!, September 9, 2011

By Diana M. Hockley "lacock2" (Australia)

(REAL NAME) Amazon Verified Purchase

This review is from: Under-Heaven (Kindle Edition)

I can't believe this book is only .99c. Having read it, I know it is worth so much more in emotional investment; a story of such power, written so beautifully has my vote every time. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

Tim Greaton became one of my favoured authors with his Santa Story and he has gained my respect and further admiration with this novel about a young boy, murdered and taken to Under Heaven, where he has to make a "life changing" decision.

I was wondering how Mr Greaton would tackle the ending, so was amazed and delighted with his solution.

This novel is the stuff of which QUALITY films are made and for which boxes of tissues were invented.

I highly recommend Under Heaven.
