[*him, *mum xD]

"No," he whispered, shaking his head. His eyes went from blank to burning the moment she started speaking, and he was in front of Erin in an instant. Bruce took her by her arms, a tall, menacing figure, yet he did not crush her in his anger. His grip was firm and controlling.

"You don't get to cry," he said in a quiet rage, lips curling into a snarl. "Because your parents aren't dead." He paused, realising that he had no reason to waste his time on this traitor, this girl that was no more than a weak, spineless worm. Bruce pushed her away from him.

It was too much; Bruce began to walk away. He stopped for a moment, looking back at the girl, disgust plain on his face. "Go to hell, Erin Fry. And do me a favour - stay there." Then he left.

Jo (Penname8) | 3183 comments Erin felt petrified with terror when Bruce grabbed her so rudely, and for a single cowardly moment she thought Bruce would actually attack her. When he released she was trembling from head to foot, and she scrambled back shakily, unable to manage herself.

But when he jabbed at her that her parents weren't dead, Erin somehow regained possession of her body. And when he said goodbye like that and spun on his heels an uncharacteristic rage sprung in her. Before she knew it, her wand was in her hand and she said out clearly, "Petrificus totalus!"

Bruce froze just as he'd turned, his body locked in place. If he'd have had control of his mouth, he'd have asked the girl how far her cowardice would go: was it not enough to stab him in the back with the deaths of his parents? His eyes blazed now, filled with the hatred that had soured his heart.

He thought with grim sarcasm, What is she going to do? Kill me?

Jo (Penname8) | 3183 comments Erin, had she been in her right mind, would have calmly put her cards on the table and explained reasonably. Right now she sighed, trying to get her heartbeat to a reasonable speed, and after approaching him, proceeded to speak.

"Now, just hold on. Firstly, I was not providing information to those lunatics at the time of your parents' death, Bruce. Secondly, my parents aren't dead, but my family will be if I don't cooperate!" She felt like she was being outright rude to him, and she needed to convince him not to tell. "And I'm not even doing it properly. I am lying to them and putting my family at risk, and doing everyone in this school a favor, and this is where you are going to listen closely."

Erin stood before Bruce, and although she was dying to let him go she needed to say everything. Why it was better this way. "Their first choice for information is what they're doing to me now. Blackmail. But if I fail, Bruce, they'll pick one of us to take my place under the Imperius curse. And it will be someone trusted, influentual, liked--like you and Daniel. Who do you want it to be? Esther? Rosaline? Dom? Cecil?" she asked, outrage seeping into her voice. She was risking everything with this maneuvre, and she was not going to have her family killed like this.

Her voice softened to how Erin actually was. "Now, soon, they'll have a second attack. I haven't been told when or on whom, but it'll fail, because I've been feeding them lies. And then they'll realize what I'm doing." Her voice turned husky and pleading. "Give me a month, or until the attack. Please. Bruce, I'm not even doing this willingly." She sighed, but pulled out her wand. She had to remind him of the danger there was. "I'm going to release you, but let me remind you that if you tell on me, you don't just kill my family and send me to Azkaban. You're clearing these people's way for success, and condemning a student to do what I'm supposed to be doing, and he or she won't have a chance to fight back."

With that, she spoke the countercurse, and leaned on the wall nearby for support, being absolutely terrified.

Bruce didn't listen until she threatened his friends. Erin had it in her power to say no - he had. His parents had died, yes, but now Bruce saw the answer to the lingering what if. Now he saw that he would have become Erin, and he would have contributed to the twisted movement. He would have taken lives that weren't his to bargain with.

But now, what was the right thing here?

"Listen here, Fry," he growled, with a gaze like sharpened slate fixed on Erin. "Don't think that I'm keeping quiet because I feel sorry for you. Quite frankly, I don't care if you go to Azkaban. But when you threaten my friends - your own family, for God's sake - then I draw the line. Nothing is going to happen to them.

"And if anything does," he towered over her. There was no mistaking the look in his eye - Erin was dead to Bruce now. He would look at her and see nothing but the spineless traitor she was. "You will sorely regret this."

Jo (Penname8) | 3183 comments Erin was now trying to keep the tears from even cropping up in her eyes. "Didn't you even listen to me! I'm not helping them! I'm stalling them, pretending to cooperate in order to have my mother and siblings saved from this horrible movement my father supports!" Her voice was shaking. She couldn't let herself look weak.

"I don't want anyone to be hurt. Least of all my family, my friends," she confessed, and she covered her face. "Ever had your loyalties divided even within your own family, Ackerman? When your father would just let strangers kill you and your family without lifting a finger?"

message 157: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"They're dead, Fry!" The laugh that followed was mirthless and metal. "My entire family. I have no one left. I don't need you to lecture me. Go take your tears to someone who gives a damn," he spat, regarding her as though she was no more appealing than something one might find in a gutter.

"Now," he said, the new-found civility fragile in his tone. "I will go, and you will let me go, because I won't hear any more of this. I've had enough."

message 158: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 3183 comments Erin stood up, and clinging to the last bit of dignity she had and fled to where she had originally been. Out of all the people that could have found her out, it had to be the one she couldn't really face. She couldn't face anyone, really. Loyalty. What did it matter here? Someone was going to die no matter what she did. Could it be her family, who knew their lives depended on her? Or could it be her friends, that had done nothing to deserve the oncoming storm?

She was tempted to tear up the letters, everything she was forced to do. The longer she kept this up, the longer her friends were freed of this burden of betrayal. She couldn't give up, and if no one understood it, so be it.

It had been a rough adjustment, these past few months, and Dena was tired of forcing herself to smile at strangers. She wasn't outgoing, she wasn't friendly in the typical sense. Never had she felt so coarse and out of place - even her American accent ashamed her. She rarely spoke to anyone other than her teachers.

The library had become her refuge, and it harboured such a wonderful collection of books that Dena could stay in there for hours. She often did, leaving only to eat and go to class. Its size was comforting. There wasn't any worry that she'd exhaust the resources any time soon - she was safe until her graduation from the school. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't counting down the months.

Resisting the Irresistible lay open in front of her, a thousand-page book that detailled the more unpleasant effects of certain gruesome curses. It was beautifully illustrated and Dena was clearly mesmerized; her mouth was slightly parted as she earnestly absorbed the words, green eyes shrouded behind dark hair.

[Dena wouldn't approach anyone, which is horrible when it comes to roleplaying :( I was thinking Daniel could see her and approach her out of sheer boredom or maybe the book she's reading is one of his favourites?]

Persephone set her stack of textbooks on a desk, and slid into a chair. With only one hour before Arithmancy, she had decided to work on her Charms homework. Which, of course, meant that she didn't have time to eat in the Great Hall... She glanced over her shoulder, then pulled her slice of steak-and-cheese pie out of her satchel. The mouth-watering smell vanished as she put a quick Bubble Charm on it. So long as the librarian didn't catch her eating it, she should be fine. Grabbing a fork out of the satchel, she began to devour her lunch, while scanning the chapter of her Charms textbook she needed to read.

"The Colour-Changing Charm's wand motion is a swish-and-jab. The slower you drag out the motion, the brighter the colour becomes," she read aloud. A smile flickering across her face, Persephone took her rosewood wand out of her top-knot. Her hair fell down past her shoulders as she pointed the wand at her half-eaten pie and muttered the charm, neatly swishing and jabbing the wand. Slowly, as if a coloured light was being directed onto it, the pie crust faded into a pale violet colour. Persephone checked over her shoulder again, and ate the rest of the pie quickly.

"Tergeo," she whispered. The crumbs vanished off the desk. She glanced up at the clock. Arithmancy began in seven minutes. Rising to her feet, Persephone swept her books into her satchel and re-did her top-knot, sliding her wand into place. She was looking forward to Arithmancy- it was the first class of the year, and one of her favourite subjects.

. (onawhim) | 1139 comments "Neat," Finn whispered enthusiastically, clamping a hand over his mouth as the passing librarian shot him an absurdly evil look. Giving her an apologetic (and only mildly terrified) smile, Finn turned over to the girl with the shock of platinum blonde hair, and his trembling smile changed abruptly to a wide and toothy grin.

"That was some wandwork," he continued in a deadly quiet whisper, conveying his approval with a thumbs-up. "I haven't seen you in Charms Club, though - you should join! I'm Finn, Finn Wallace -" a hand jutted on in preparation for a handshake, " - very pleased to meet you, what's your name?"

His overly friendly attitude could scare away some of the shyer students, but Finn's smile was so charming and genuine that it was really only a matter of time before he befriended the entire school. He made a point to know and like as many people as he possibly could - he'd just been sitting in the desk opposite the blonde girl when her whispering had pricked his ear, and being Finn, decided to make an introduction.

message 162: by [deleted user] (new)

Persephone looked up and smiled at Finn. It wasn't often that someone would chat to her. Everyone was so absorbed in their own lives that they would pass over her. She reached out and shook his hand firmly.
"Persephone," she said. "Persephone Typhana. Are you part of the Charms Club?"
She tried to remember if she had seen this Finn before. He looked about her age- perhaps a year older- he seemed the sort of person who would normally be surrounded by a gaggle of giggling girls or a gang of mates. His smile was warm and inviting, and Persephone found herself hoping that this wouldn't be their last meeting. After her friend Bethany had moved to France, Persephone had been hoping to make some new friends.

. (onawhim) | 1139 comments "Oh, yes," Finn gushed, linking his arm merrily into hers as he accompanied her through the shelves of the library.

"It's so much fun. Poor Geraldine Bridgewaters was hiccuping for a week thanks to John Fairling - so don' ask her, of course - but quite honestly, yes, it's a lovely time! And then there's the fact that we're ahead of Charms assignments so often, so that's a bonus. Are you in any clubs?" Finn turned to look at Persephone expectantly, his high-powered speech coming to an abrupt stop at the question.

message 164: by [deleted user] (new)

Persephone blinked, taken aback by his charming, eager ways but pleased as well. Most students seemed so dismal, but Finn seemed to be a genuinely cheerful boy.
"No," she admitted, blushing slightly. "I haven't joined any. I've been thinking of for a while, though...Charms Club sounds like fun. Charms has always been my favourite subject- along with Arithmancy, of course."
They continued walking for a short while; then, spurred on by an uncharacteristically bold urge, asked;
"Where can I sign up?"

The typical library scene: a young Ravenclaw engrossed in a book. More of them lay scattered on the table, stacked precariously on top of each other. Volumes on general magic, ranging broadly from arithmancy to the healing arts. No subject was left unexplored.

As the atypical Ravenclaw, however, Logan was also surrounded by some Muggle books. Sent to him by his father upon request, these were more oriented to chemistry. It seemed that Lammergeier could only carry so many books back and forth, and Logan was running out of storage space.

As the typical Ravenclaw, Esther found herself in the library once more, skimming the shelves for some topic that would catch her interest. However, it seemed that today's subject was not on the shelves, but instead on the desk of a certain housemate of hers. There were pictures of things she hadn't seen in years, but were easily recognizable. She caught a few headers and eventually words as she made her want towards Logan.

"'Lo," she greeted with a smile.

message 167: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"Hello," Logan replied in a drawl, although his eyes did not leave the page until he finished the paragraph, some seconds well after he'd heard the greeting. Glancing up to see Esther, the neutrality of his expression brightened with a smile. Even if he was in the middle of some particularly interesting research, a friend was always welcome.

"Esther," he said, the greeting more genuine.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
"Logan," she replied with a small laugh. Esther pulled a chair and sat across from him. "What are you up to now?"

Clearly something to do with Muggle Chemistry, but why? It wasn't anything particularly useful Wizarding world, as far as she could tell, especially since a lot of people got touchy when it came to Muggle technology.

message 169: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"Oh, just doing a bit of research. Not the boring kind, though." Logan rolled his eyes towards the history-focused section of the library as he slouched against his chair, then his exaggerated bored expression broke into a grin. "This is way more interesting. You're Muggle-born, right?"

Logan gestured to one of the covers, a rather generic graphic of a molecule on it. Some of the others were less obvious, as he was going into some specifics, and he doubted that Esther was too concerned about inorganic chemistry.

"Recognise this?"

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
((apparently, inorganic is worse than organic, according to my old tutor o3o))

"Half-blood," she corrected lightly, but nodded. "I do. But why are you learning about chemistry of all things?"

She couldn't deny her interest in Muggle science (despite how long it had been since looking at a textbook). Her mother was a doctor, and it seemed the interest had been passed down to her. Before Hogwarts, she'd spent countless hours reading from her mother's books.

((o.o))

"Ah, sorry." His smile turned apologetic. Those kinds of things tended to slip his mind, although Esther didn't seem to have a problem with it. "Why not?" he retorted as playful light jumped into his eyes. "We study magic, right? That doesn't automatically mean that everything scientific doesn't pertain. To us, especially, Esther."

"All this is fairly interesting on its own. But what about when you involve magic? How can we transfigure things? How does that work at a molecular level, you know? I just find it all fascinating because it reminds so unexplored."

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
"Huh. I suppose you're right. I never really thought about it. But you're right; it really is fascinating."

She turned a book towards her to inspect it. How strange it was that seemingly no one else had bothered to think about it. In some ways, it was exciting to think that Logan might be the first to make some sort of discovery between the two.

message 173: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"I wish people were more aware of this. Magic is excellent, but I don't like to forget about science." His parents were adamant on having him well-rounded since he was young. Not that it had been a bother. Quite the contrary, he was glad to have an understanding of each.

Logan tilted his head to the side as he regarded Esther. "Do you remember any of it?" he asked, gesturing to the book with his chin.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
Esther nodded. "Most of it. I used to get really into it. My mum's a doctor, so she has a lot of books in her study. She kept a lot of her old text books from university. I used to go through when I got bored," she explained. "I can ask her to send some of them, if you want."

message 175: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"Wow, lucky," Logan said, his envy only playful. It might have been cool if his mum was a doctor, but she was already in a position he'd found interesting since he was a little boy. "My mum wanted to be a doctor, but then she became a botanist," he chuckled. "Go figure."

"She deals with magical and Muggle sciences. I guess that's why I always found this stuff so neat. What kind of doctor is your mum?"

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
"That's actually really cool," she said with a small laugh. Her father might have adapted well to Muggle culture, but anything to do with science sailed over his head. The same was true in reverse for her mother. "She's a paramedic."

message 177: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"Oh, then you must know loads more than me about that kind of thing. I'm not very good with human biology, or human anything, really." While Logan's smile never faltered, Esther was probably aware of what he meant. His friendliness was not always reciprocated, and in his younger years he'd been labeled a target. That had grown to be a smaller problem as he aged, but he still remembered it nonetheless.

"Oh, and thanks for the offer, I'd love to see those books. If you'd like, you can take some of these. One could say I have too many, but that's only in the aspect of physical space."

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
"I guess I just inherited the interest in it." Logan was sweet, Esther thought. Maybe a bit eccentric at times, but most definitely endearing. It seemed strange to her that so many people took to avoiding him. "We could start our own library with how many there are."

message 179: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
Logan let out a little snort. That was a funny way of looking at it, although it seemed that he'd inherited the same thing. "A Muggle-sciences section of the library might be nice," he mused. "Speaking of inheritance," he said, dismissing the other subject entirely in a burst of excitement. "Have you seen the report about the genetics of magic? It's really quite amazing. You might want to take a look it. I could probably ask my father to send a copy."

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
"It would be, but I doubt anyone besides us would be interested," Esther said. Her eyebrow raised at the mention at the article. "No. But I'd love to read it. What is it about?"

message 181: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
"A shame," he replied with a shrug. If only more young wizards and witches found the subject more interesting. Perhaps with time an awareness would grow. Still, he was glad to be alive in this time of undiscovered possibilities. "It's about the gene that causes a person to have magical capabilities. Why it's possible for wizards to be Muggle-born, or for two magical parents to have a Squib. A Muggle-born discovered it, naturally. So I'm not the first to make a connection, but it's still exciting to think we're at the crossroads of opportunity, isn't it?"
