Thanks , I am happy too :)
Maybe we can assign a week between mid-March and mid-April on the 52's Calendar to signify we're reading the memoir "Wild Swans", and I will continue to feature it for a month on The Imprinted Life.
Asmah wrote: "Maybe we can assign a week between mid-March and mid-April on the 52's Calendar to signify we're reading the memoir "Wild Swans", and I will continue to feature it for a month on The Imprinted Life."Sounds like a plan! :)
Marieke wrote: "Sounds like a plan! :) ..."I haven't checked the Calendar for a while; actually, can't find where it is.
Some of us all already into Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China @ Wild Swans Discussion. I don't know whether anyone posted yet. There ought to be some impressions and thoughts about three generations of Chinese women.
Jenny wrote: "Ooh forgot to start!"You're okay, Jenny. I'm starting in about a week (reading Kokoro first). It's kind of read when you can fit it in. But I do hope you can also fit in Mary Novik's Conceit in a couple months. That should be really be an exciting story, too.
i'm really feeling both overwhelmed and superdooper excited for March. so many good books in my stack...i'll probably be starting Wild Swans around March 14 along with Imprinted Life.
Marieke wrote: "i'm really feeling both overwhelmed and superdooper excited for March. so many good books in my stack...i'll probably be starting Wild Swans around March 14 along with Imprinted Life."That's terrific, Marieke. I always enjoy your comments. I hope you'll be able to make it your 'China' book.
i'm planning to! i have a lot of shorties in March. i'm also planning to try to finally get to 1Q84, but with a lot of short books, i think it will be manageable.
Marieke wrote: "i'm planning to! i have a lot of shorties in March. i'm also planning to try to finally get to 1Q84, but with a lot of short books, i think it will be manageable."1Q84 is also on my soon-to-read list, before March ends, after some Japanese sake (i.e. Natsume Sōseki) and sakura (cherry blossoms) :)
Asmah, i thought you read 1Q84 already?!i'm excited about Soseki, too. i'm going to try to read two...Kokoro and B-- shoot, i forgot the name.
So the group is actually starting Wild Swans on the 14th not finishing reading and beginning the discussion on the 14th? I'm confused....and I haven't started it yet either. I'm also planning to read My Name is Red over the next several weeks with MENA. And there are so many other books to read (as well as the ones I've already started).
Sue I'm in the same boat. I'll be leading that discussion for My Name is Red and it won't be an easy read. But March is six weeks long, right?! Haha. Anyway, I think the MENA lit books will each be two months for reading and discussion. That should help.
I'm glad the MENA books are 2 months for reading and discussion. I think that book will likely need it. I will have to get to Wild Swans soon.
Sue wrote: "I'm glad the MENA books are 2 months for reading and discussion. I think that book will likely need it. I will have to get to Wild Swans soon."This is an excellent book, but it is dense with history so it cannot be read quickly. Just thought I'd mention it.
indeed, Anne--i tried to read My Name is Red several years ago and couldn't manage it on my own. i'm hoping for a really rich and helpful discussion. Sue--i'll probably start reading it soon, but i'll read it slowly. i'm hoping that Wild Swans is a relatively quick read; it seems like it should be. Also, several friends here at GR whose reading habits i admire really, really liked it.
Marieke, I was referring to Wild Swans, tho maybe it will be a quick read for you. A lot of the history of what went on during WW11 in China is very detailed and new to me.
Marieke wrote: "Oh no! Really?! Uh-oh...."I'm just saying that it's not a book you can whip through in a 2 days - unless all you do is read this book.
Ah...two dense reading books coming up!! And 2 books I'm reading and the slow read of Middlemarch. What a reading year. But such good books.
So you see, I set the reading parameters for March 14-Apr 14, but they are flexible. And, I'm hoping readers of Wild Swans will post something of their impressions or about something else in that book. I can appreciate that some members might find my 'mellow moderator' approach a bit frustrating and unpredictable. If we think of what each of us will get from the book that we give our time and bring our thoughts to, the historical memoir should reward each of us and each of us also benefit other members with insights and benefit in return. Each of us is unique which is my rationale for being 'mellow'.
Sue wrote: "I appreciate mellow moderators!"I feel immense relief. Thks for your emotional/spiritual support, Sue.

thanks for your support Judy. I've been reading The Club Dumas today and really enjoying it and keeping up with Middlemarch and hit on a really fun segment. All adds to my enjoyment and, with encouragement too, makes me know all the books will be read.
I think I will start this one by 14 March or the last week of March - not sure . I need to get to "My name is Red", also I haven't finish "Agaat" , things were crazy around me lately !
Janice, you may want to correct the thread title (Swans needs to be pluralized) so it's easier for people to find if they're reading this book.
Osho wrote: "Janice, you may want to correct the thread title (Swans needs to be pluralized) so it's easier for people to find if they're reading this book."It's done!
Nile daughter wrote: "I think I will start this one by 14 March or the last week of March - not sure . Thankfully we have a longer time for My Name is Red.
Sue wrote: "We'll probably be starting this book about the same time ND. Thankfully we have a longer time for My Name is Red...."That is good to know :) and yes it is good to have longer time for "My name is Red" ...
I see Anne already started her trip to china ;)
Judy wrote: "Oh good, I get to read a book with ND finally! (big smiles)"
Yeeeees :D :D :D
I'm not exactly sure the reading order of my juggled books of international, japanese, and outside-of-Greads reading. Sometime from mid-March might work out for me for Wild Swans. I've browsed through a library edition, so I can appreciate what Anne is talking about in Jung Chang's memoir of twentieth-century China. When the book I'll be actually reading is ready, that will bring me closer to starting it. It's probably good we've had advance notice about this book for it to be gotten.
I started Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China last night. Now I understand exactly what Anne meant in her post. I'm surprised at the fuedal, disorganized state of China into the 20th century. It is a dense read but packed with information I didn't know and the author's family info.
Glad you're reading Wild Swans, too, Sue. I'll be starting around the March 14 because of commitments. Judy and Anne have begun a worthy discussion of Wild Swans at Imprinted Life, so see you there mid-week and am keeping up with all commenters' insights before then, too!
Judy, thank you for pointing to the Wild Swans' s discussion on Imprinted Life where we found the book originally scheduled and agreed to continue reading there :) You, Anne, Sue, Nile Daughter, Marieke, myself, and someone else will be reading it. I've already learned a lot from your and Anne's posts.
I've only read one chapter so far and probably will read this one slowly as it is dense, as Anne so aptly described it. I will use your link for the Imprinted life discussion. Thanks Asmah. And thanks for mentioning it Judy.
Asmah wrote: "Judy, thank you for pointing to the Wild Swans' s discussion on Imprinted Life where we found the book originally scheduled and agreed to continue reading there :) You, Anne, Sue, Nile Daughter, ..."I look forward to the discussion of this book. It is rife with topics for discussion. See you all over at Imprinted LIfe.
