Looking for a particular book/series

I can't remember the author or title of the series but if I tell a little about it someone might know what I'm talking about. I read this story back in the early 80's. It's about a girl who had lived in with nuns and some other girls and each girl is supposed to have a "gift" her gift was the ability to talk and to understand animals? She has a shape shifter boyfriend. I think there was a tower being built and there was going to be a war? and at the end everybody lost their gift. Ugh...sorry I know this doesn't make sense but I know at the time I really liked this book. I know it's not much to go on but if it jars a memory...thanks!

I have been reading George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones. It is so amazing. Have you guys read it?

I've just started GoT. My wife is on the 4th book now. It's driving her crazy not being able to discuss it with me.

I don't really know. I really liked the series on HBO & have barely started the book. I got sick & haven't been able to read for the past few days. My eyes are too blurry & I just can't think. Instead I've been watching 'Warehouse 13' episodes (about 2 dozen in 3 days) trying to catch up. If nothing else, that tells you how sick I am.
