Suki Michelle (sukimichelle) | 18 comments I joined GR in August to get the word out about my co-written YA Urban Fantasy, but that's not why I'm posting here. I'm really just curious. How do you decide what you absolutely must read? Is it ratings? Reviews? The synopsis? Do you only read books your friends have recommended? Eager to hear your answers.

I'm just so impressed with the intelligence level here!!

Thanks,

Suki

Stephie (princesspurple86) I read the synopsis to get an idea if I would like the book as in what its written about but my real decision to read something is from reviews and ratings. I also like to get samples of the ones I am leery about to read the first few chapters before I decide if I should or shouldn't to read it. Usually if I like one of the authors books I would like more of them since I look at the writing style but I make sure its a story I would be able to read also. If I really like it I usually tell my friends about it.

Suki Michelle (sukimichelle) | 18 comments Interesting, Stephie. I had a feeling posting a sample chapter was important, especially since it's our first book. It's scary and exciting when those ratings and reviews start coming in because we can't control the reaction! I'm learning a lot here. Thanks for responding. I hope to hear from more readers.

Izzy The synopsis is very important to me, but sometimes something as shallow as a beautiful book cover will pull me in. A gushing review is also sure to get me.

Suki Michelle (sukimichelle) | 18 comments I'm with you, Izzy. I always read the synopsis and reviews. The gushers get me too, though I don't always agree. Sometimes a book with a lot of 3's turns out to be a favorite, and I've been known to put down a "fiver", but you're right - the reviews are a strong hook. That being said, too many "ones" and I probably won't read it.

Great post! For me it's the number and quality of reviews or the covers, as well as what author it's by. If it's a favorite author, I'm willing to try novellas, spin-offs, etc.

Suki Michelle (sukimichelle) | 18 comments Meagan, if you go to Barnes & Noble (or even call them), they'll order whatever book you want and have it shipped to the store (maybe even to your house). Our book will be at their online store (10/17), but not on the shelves . . . YET. I'm hoping that doesn't stop people from getting it, especially since it's had such a positive response here at GR.

Patti - I agree - loving an author is a great motivation. I've read everything Stephen King has written, which explains the frequent nightmares.

Nica (neecadoodles) | 4 comments I read books mostly because of the non-spoiler-reviews and the ratings. I also buy a book sometimes because the cover is nice. LOL. Anybody who hands me a book, i'll read it, if the beginning gets me, I'll finish it.
