Me: OH OH OH. I got it. After Kip's infamous prank where he drained some of the lake into the Slytherin dungeon, and he was serving out his sentence in Filch's dungeon. This is near the end of the year so they're running out of things to give him, and he's filing papers or something/being Filch's personal slave. (Rumour has it he once had to give him a foot rub.)
And then Mauricia comes in, and maybe she's really scared bc she's young - would have been in 1st year I think - and Kip calms her down?
