Me: It's just I got my chemistry and maths tests back, and I got 70's, and when that happens I just feel really stupid. ;n; I wish intelligence wasn't measured by maths and sciences in my school.

Me: That will change :) You're an incredibly smart girl and don't let yourself get weighed down. Everyone knows that highschool is about pushing yourself - willpower - motivation, not about smarts or intelligence which you will discover that roughly 90% of the people going to your school do not have, even if 40% of them are straight A students that excel at maths and sciences.

Yeah. How do you find the asymptotes for logs and expotential functions?

Me: right, so for the exponential function f(x)=a^x, (where a > 0) the asymptote is always the x-axis. When you have f(x)= (a^x) + w, then the entire graph will shift up (see the unless w is negative, in which case it would shift down) w units, including the asymptote, so the asymptote is y= w. there is no vertical asymptote for an exponential function. So if w = 3, the asymptote is y = 3. If w = -2 then y = -2. Let me find the one for the log.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
Me: do you understand the other properties of exponential functions?

Me: Yeah, I do.

OK, so I completely understood that but I lost points on my test and I don't know why. :/ I put x = -5, and the graph shows the curve leveling out at -5 and not going any farther. I thought perhaps I was missing the vertical asymptote, but they don't have any, so.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
Me: right, so logarithms are the inverses of exponential equations, so the x of the exponential equation is the y of the log and vice versa. Given the function f(x) = log a (x), in which a>0, a=/= 0, and is the base of the log, and x > 1:
The asymptote will be the y-axis. There is no horizontal asymptote. Also, the input of a logarithmic function can never be negative. More on that later. So just like how if you added or subtracted a number after the input of the exponential, the entire graph would shift, if you add or subtract something within the logarithmic function, its graph will shift along with the asymptote.
Given the function: f(x) = log a (x + w) where w is a real number. The graph would shift left w units, and "become more negative," so to speak. If w = 2, then the asymptote would become x = -2 and the entire graph would shift left 2 units. If w = -5, then the asymptote would be x = 5 and the graph would shift right 5 units. When shifting back and forth ("transforming") along the x-axis, it's important to remember that the sign that causes the shift is the opposite of what you'd expect. Positive shifts left, negative shifts right.

Me: it should follow the asymptote closely without touching to the edge of the graph. What was the question?

message 16768: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 7885 comments Mod
Me: The question was: Identify a possible parent function and asymptotes for the following graphs. I got full points on the parent functions, but I only got 2 out of three on the asymptotes.

Iviana (The Sign Painter) Mʘ‿ʘP (thesignpainter) | 8158 comments Mod
Me: the asymptote would be x = 0 for the natural log.

. (onawhim) | 1139 comments Me: Cecil and Ingrid will be fun to roleplay. I'm imagining all the things they did to each other through their childhood - worms in sandwiches, etc. Maybe Cecil could have put a Boggart in her (gigantic) closet as an elaborate heist and as a result she was traumatized for a week. Now they're on an uneasy truce?

message 16786: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 3183 comments Me: xD On violin. It's how high your fingers are on the fingerboard. On first, third and fifth position the notes on the lines fall on uneven numbers for fingers and notes in spaces fall on even numbers for fingers. With second, fourth, and sixth it's the opposite. It's a little confusing.

I just watched Brave and can't get rod of the Scottish soundtrack in my head. xD

Me: I'll just make a new one after I finish my homework.

I don't mind spiders. I just catch them and set them free, because normally they're tiny. Cockroaches scare me really badly, though, because we had an infestation of them in our house when I was little.
