Me: I mean, I'm pretty sure that Shakespeare is considered the beginning of Early Modern English (or at least, around that time period was Early Modern English) and so by researching Shakespeare and reading Shakespeare, we learn the beginnings of modern language.

It's important for the same reason why history is (and philosophy). it helps us understand ourselves better and it reflects how our language might develop.
