Bedtime Booknerd (shawtygurl15) Hi I'm new to this whole joining a group for people who love to read...I've been wanting to for years & now finally did it. I love to read especially the classic lit. & open to any recommendations...my dream is to have one of those rooms where the walls are just covered with books with a comfortable couch in the middle...lol...

message 302: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Chambers | 44 comments Welcome Ingrid. I have often had the same wish except I see myself sitting in a comfortable rocking chair before a roaring fire on a snowy cold night. Maybe one of these days.

message 303: by Bedtime Booknerd (new)

Bedtime Booknerd (shawtygurl15) To Gerry: yep someday...so far I only have bout 10% of books in my room...looks like I still have a long way to go...oh & I also want a small table next to the couch for my hot coffee or tea or cocoa...

message 304: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Chambers | 44 comments Ingrid, I hope you don't think this is a stupid question, but since I'm a book addict, my number one problem is storage. if you only have 10% of your books in your room, where do you store the rest??

Lori Glad to have you in this group!!!

Kristine (foreveryearning) | 72 comments Hi everyone, my name is Kristine but you can call me Kris. I've been on Goodreads for a year now because I just love it so much lol I enjoy reading general fiction, historical fiction, chick lit after a particularly heavy taxing book, some mystery, and a little bit of fantasy. Basically, if it sounds good to me, I'll read it :)

I have my other books in the garage or I donate some to the library to make room for the ones that I really really want...

message 312: by Gerry (new)

Gerry Chambers | 44 comments Over the last 10 years I have seen my collection of close to 6,000 books shrink to about 1,500. I carelessly stored most of them in my basement in cardboard boxes. Two instances of leaky hot water heaters did a fair amount of damage and I took the opportunity to cull some more out and donate to the library. I now store all my books in plastic totes, so hopefully no more water damage. It was very depressing to have to get rid of water damaged books.

oh man...that is very depressing especially for book lovers...we treat our books like its our child...lol...

Gerry Chambers | 44 comments Well I have learned (I'm slow learner) a valuable lession on how to treat "old friends". But the good side of this whole morbid tale, if there is a good side, is that I did free up some room for some new books.

Have never read War & Peace, but have read "Anna Karenina" - I remember liking the book, but it was difficult to slog through the Russian names.

Maybe it is time to tackle it again.

Alanna | 655 comments Hi everyone, my name is Alanna. I now live in Joliet, Il, but have also lived in OH(Dayton, Marion,& Cincinnati), CT(Danbury), NH(Londonderry), AL(Birmingham), and VA(Virginia Beach). I have been married for 39 years and we have three grown children and three grandchildren. I love to read and joined Goodreads last summer after my daughter recommended it to me. I really love this site and it comes in handy when picking a book for our neighborhood book club. I found your group and I chose to join because the book shelf has books I've read or want to read.

Tracy | 5 comments Hi,
My name's Tracy and this group was recommended to me by my mom. Books are my passion and I love that you're having a Steinbeck Summer. East of Eden is one of my all-time faves. I'm married with 3 kids and a golden retriever. I also love to write and recently started a blog for parents of tweens. I've started reviewing YA books on there. Looking forward to meeting all of you and seeing what you're reading!

Thanks a lot Sandra. Been away from my machine for a couple of days so just catching up. How are things near Philadelphia. I want to make a trip down that way soon. Go to some ball games. Any real interesting book stores you can recommend??

Gerry Chambers | 44 comments Jennifer wrote: "Ontario is a lot nice than Michigan! Everything down here is okay, even with the car company's crashing :)" I don't know if Ontario is nicer. Michigan seems like a nice state to visit. We are having our problems up here to. Isn't great that we have our books to escape to and leave all the other issues aside for a little while.

Howdy ya'll from Memphis! I am 37 and recently completed my graduate work in music. Now that I'm out of school, I'm able to get back to my other passion - reading great books.

I have generally stuck to the classics and mainstream fiction, but have ventured into sci-fi and mysteries recently. If I had to narrow down my favorite authors, I'd have to list Mark Twain, Harper Lee, and Charles Dickens....in our era, my favorite is Jodi Picoult.

Looking forward to re-reading the Steinbeck next month!

message 348: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Hi there Keith. I agree about Jodi Picoult - apart from her endings.
