So I get to be the discussion leader for this selection BUT I am going to need your help!! Talk, talk, talk.......I also tried to find some discussion questions online but have not had any luck. I also am not too far in the book as I have had to do some postings for an online class and had meetings every day after school for 4 days (whine).1. Was anyone "tricked" at the beginning of the story into believing that the 3 children belonged to Grant? The children were exposed to a "mean" father (drinking?).....
2. What are you thinking about the pain (pain is a signal that he is awake and alive)...that Grant is feeling???
3. How do you think the storyline of Luke will enfold or what will happen with Echo??
I will also use the book talk questions from the back of the book but I was trying to search for more on the internet! Happy Reading!
I'm about 100 pages in and am enjoying it so far although it's also a rather strange novel. I'm mainly digging the Native American spiritual stuff but also feel a bit lost because of all the mythical elements.
It is a bit offbeat and I brought my NOOK to school yesterday and left it there... Twice!! So I am behind you!!! I have some questions from reading that I am looking forward to having answered.
I finished it today and I quite enjoyed it. It's definitely an interesting read. Hopefully we can have more discussion after the weekend.
We can discuss the questions above, as needed. Also, I will get some more posted from the book itself.
I finished it this weekend and was not impressed. For one thing, I couldn't keep any of the female characters separate (I thought Melanie was the one in love with Grant for the longest time, also, Emily, Leila, and Clarisse were all interchangable). The other thing that really bothered me was the reunion of Grant and Echo. "Hey, I haven't seen you in 5+ years because you stormed out on me in a failed romance, but how's the job going. Oh, and, you're beautiful." That may have been the least awkward former lover reunion in history. On the plus side, I live in the Finger Lakes' region of New York (2 over from Canadaigua Lake) and she definitely nailed the setting.
Sadly, I'm not at all familiar with their folklore. All I know is the belief that god put his hand down here and the Finger Lakes are the result of that. It's a beautiful area, like the characters in the book, I'm struck by it almost daily.
I just finished the book I was reading and am getting ready to start this one! Is anyone else just starting it???
Still about halfway through. About six weeks into a new school year and already behind the eight ball! I am wondering how Grant's "healer episodes" will play out, though.
I only just got it out of the library today so way behind the discussion. Also in the middle of another book. Will read soon.
I am do busy at school but amabout 3/4 done.there does not seem to be enough character development for me!
Finished. I really enjoyed this one. It's kind of Native American magical realism. I wasn't all that thrilled about the ending, I mean, if you kill a character, they should be dead, & not just seriously injured to make everything nice at the end. But other then that, I liked it. I didn't have any problem keeping the characters straight.
