Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments Just finished this earlier and really enjoyed it. I actually read the sample before it was chosen as the group read, but it wasn't long enough to convince me to buy it at the time (it has a rather long introduction that takes up most of the sample).

I will admit that it took me a little time to warm to it. The first couple of stories were ok, but I found it took me till about 40ish percent before I really got into it. By the time I got to the final story this afternoon, I was already beginning to feel sad that I was going to miss these characters.

***Spoiler Alert****

My favourite stories were the one with the woman who was over 200 years old. And the second last one about the aliens who had created the human race as a food supply. Although there was one thing I didn't get about the end of that story (which may be due to the fact I read it in two parts and might have missed something), was the earthquakes. I wasn't sure what their significance to the story was. I may have to re-read that story.

I googled the author after I finished the book and am happy to see there are other Callahan books. I am pretty sure I will download them at some point and add them to my ever growing tbr list.

Spoiler alert

I thought that the earthquakes were caused by the other alien, Mickey Finn, eliminating the bad aliens....

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Spoilers here
It took me a while to finish this but I finally did it last night. I sort of guessed that Callahan wasn't all he seemed.

I thought the earthquakes was them blowing themselves up.

I liked the 200 year old woman. It made my mind think about some very philosophical points but it didn't really end properly.

On the whole a great read. Thanks for putting it up for us Gingerlilly!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Glad you liked it. I am literally just back from my travels so I haven't had much chance to do either reading or posting since the beginning of October. I really want to dig Callahan out and do some re-reading now though.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Just finished Callahan -loved it and will read more. Thanks for the recommendation Gingerlily!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments So, I sent an email to Spider's publisher a few weeks ago...

.......

Spider's wonderful book has been chosen by one of our members here.

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/5...

I'm personally very excited about sharing Spider's work as I've been loving
his stuff for years.

The book will be posted to our group this Saturday with a 'How are you getting
on' thread. Two weeks later a spoiler friendly discussion thread will be
opened.

We are a new group, only in existence for a bit over two months, yet we've
already attracted over 500 members.  I am one of the two moderators.

Please feel free to pop along and have a look. We are a fun, friendly group,
very much like my vision of Callahan's and Jake's.

Best Regards

Patti

...........

I got a personal reply from him this morning!

I'm actually shaking!!!!

........

Thanks, Patti.  I'll try and fall by for a look.  But when I started
answering website email this afternoon I was working on messages from last
June, and just now got this far; that should hint at how overworked I am.
Keeping afloat without Jeanne to backstop me seems to require 48 hour days,
14 days a week, 730 days a year.

I hope you folks have a good time with that book.  Please bear in mind its
opening story, "The Guy With The Eyes," was my very first sale.  How long
ago?  The Beatles had just broken up....

I love the quote!

Thank you so much, Spider!!!!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh how cool! I'm not surprised you're shaking.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I just started this last night - I'm two stories in already. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. I'll say more when I've finished it.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I really looking forward to hearing your opinion, Ignite!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just back from my weekend away (fabulous time!) over which I finished the book. I had expected from what people had said that it would be a belly-laugh book which it wasn't (for me) but it had a lot of humour. Mainly I found it big on wisdom and philosophy which I hadn't been prepared for. Callahan's is the place where the unacceptable can go to be accepted - oh it SO much reminded me of this forum! The puns were nearly as excruciating as ours too.

It was an enjoyable read and something I wouldn't have found without the forum book group's recommendation - thanks to Gingerlily for that.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Glad you enjoyed it - and there are plenty more books in the series. The puns get worse....

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Having now completely woken up from my weekend away (poor old thing doesn't get out much) I felt it worth pointing out that at the price I was disappointed to find formatting errors. Many times the sentence randomly broke off and moved to the next line. There were other errors too, obviously due to the move from Tree book to E book. It looked like a case of poor scanning. oh for on, Leifh for Leith, fiat for flat and popside for popsicle for example. People moan like the blazes when Indies do this for a mere 86p. I was cross to have it in a book that cost over a fiver.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I was too, Ignite and I emailed the publisher about it. I've not heard back from them, yet. :(
