TASKS

Every task is based on one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. You don't have to read a Terry Pratchett book if you don't want to. If you do however choose to read a book written by him then you can only read this book for the task that used that particular book as inspiration. For example: the book Reaper Man can only be read for task 11 not for task 4.

Tasks:

2) The Light Fantastic

GENERAL RULES

The challenge will start on 1 November 2011 and will run until 31 October 2012.

If you want to join, please sign up in the sign up thread and you will be assigned to a team. A team can have a maximum of 4 participants. If all teams are full when you sign up a new team will be created.

At the end of the challenge we will announce a team winner where we will take in consideration the number of teammembers.

If all teams have completed the challenge the team that has done it the fastest will be announced the winner.

Every book you read for this challenge will have to have at least 150 pages of text.

TEAM RULES

As a team you will have to read all 40 tasks.

These tasks will have to be divided before you start reading.

If someone is later assigned to your team he or she will have to read the tasks for the teamchallenge that are still not assigned to any other teammember.

There are 4 interactive tasks. These are tasks 18, 25, 33 and 36. For these tasks you have to do something more than just read a book. In the teamchallenge every member has to do one interactive task. If your team has 3 members that will mean that you will have to leave one interactive task for a potential fourth member.

The dividing of the tasks and recommendations for books and everything else team related can be discussed in your own team discussion thread.

If at any time for some reason you won't continue with this challenge please let us know so we may assign another member to your team.

What happens if a team member doesn't participate?

message 9: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
We'll hunt them down and take him or her out back :)

Who isn't participating? I will first try to make contact with them to make sure they are not participating anymore. If people want to join the challenge while it is in progress they can replace people who aren't participating. For the teamchallenge winner we will take into consideration members who haven't participated so they don't mess up the scores.
I don't know if I have answered you're question but I am not sure what you want to know.

message 10: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith How long would a person have to be inactive for before we consider them as not participating?

message 11: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
It's just that Jocelyn (one of the City Watch) hasn't replied to the thread. I messaged her, but haven't had a reply. It is early days yet, so she might be busy with other things.

message 12: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
If you get the feeling someone isn't participating and has been absent for a while without telling they were going to be absent for a holiday or anything then let me know.

@ Lauren: In your case I have already contacted Jo and I have seen that she hasn't been active on Goodreads since she signed up. I will contact her on her private email adress and will let you know what happens.

@Crusader: I will check into it and will keep you posted on what we are going to do.

And just keep in mind we are sort of hardcore and are people who haven't got a life and because of that spend a lot of time on Goodreads. There are people who are part of Goodreads and our group however that do have a social life and while they are active they don't check goodreads every single hour :P

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Hey, I have a life! It's just that a lot of it gets lived online...

Thanks for contacting Jo. I know we're all a little bit, um, overeager. I just keep thinking of all the people who signed up for Harry Potter and then never returned.

message 14: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Pfft why would you not check goodreads every single hour? :P

message 15: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments People have a real social life? :D

Ok so this challenge runs from November to October next year? We have a year to do it? Or is it quicker than that?

message 16: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
My message was sent on the 6th of October. Not too worried yet, but since we are at the planning stage it would be good to get everyone on the team involved.

I echo Lauren's sentiments. I have a life, being online is just a huge part of it.

message 17: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Maybe it is just me then who doesn't has a social life :(

Nothing wrong with being overeager and it would be nice if everyone checks in at least once so we know they are still planning on doing this challenge.
I have sent both Jo and Jocelyn a message. Jo hasn't been active at all since she singed up. I checked so that is why I sent a message to her private email. I knwo she is still in the land of the living since she has been very active on twitter. That might be the next step in contacting her but lets wait a couple of days before we try that. Also I don't have a twitter account so some one else has to do that. Jocelyn hasn't been very active and might just not have read her mail. I snet her a nice message though without trying to push her but please let us know something.

Hey Claudine, yes you will have a year to finish reading. That doesn't mean you can't complete it in 3 months if you want to do that. There are some members who will finish very quickly because they read a lot of books but some of us aren't that fast since apparantly they have lifes :) and don't spend all their time reading and they will take some longer to finish.

message 18: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
BTW: if the tasks are divided I will update the first message in every teamdiscussion to include who is doing which task. If you want me to do it sooner let me know.

Oh Lu, I have been trying to decide if that is the sweetest thing I have ever heard or just really pathetic, but I can't seem to make my mind up. The scary thing is for a large part it is true for me too. Thanks guys. I have been a member of this group a little longer than that I have been really active and participating in challenges which is a year now. The Harry Potter challenge was the first I took part in and I must say it has been great. I even talk about you with my other friends and family and I cannot even begin to count the times you all had me in stitches from laughing. So thank you all!

But then I wouldn't know what to do with my time :(

message 28: by Shelagh (new)

Shelagh P. (shelaghp) Can the same book count for more than one task? Happy to read a book for each, but some books could fall under more than one task.

message 29: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
No, it has always been one book one task. Of course a book can be used for several challenges but within a challenge only once. You can shift around. Like if you have used a book for task 1 and halfway through you decide you want to use it for task 2 because you have read a book that can only be used for task 1 that is ok.

message 30: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok, we still have a few days before we start reading. I hope the dividing of the tasks is going well. If anyone has any questions please let me know.

I have tried to contact Jo and Jocelyn. I haven't heard anything back though. I suggest we wait till the challenge has started and then if they don't check in within a week to send another message. If they don't respond to that message we consider them to be withdrawn and their places will be filled if and when new contestants will show up. This will leave the witches with 2 members and they will get the first member to sign up. Or if they prefer I will volunteer to join their group so they still have 3 members.

message 31: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments My team members seem to be uninterested to participate. It's lonely in my group.

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I was just going over the rules again and wondering about the issue with inactive team members as well as the number of members in each team - a team has to complete all 40 tasks to complete the challenge, but what if you have only 1 or 2 active readers?

Also, I was just checking to see if tasks have to be assigned before the challenge starts, and I see that this is the case - why? I can't plan my reading that far ahead, and anyway it's not possible as one of my team members hasn't shown up yet.

message 33: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 163 comments Well how about relooking at teams? Do we need that many?

message 34: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
This is what I suggest:

Leave The City Watch and The Assasins Guild as they are
They are sorted and planned

Maybe reshuffle? And make 2 groups out of them

The Witches of Lancre
The Unseen University
The Wee Free Men

message 35: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
I agree with Lu. Perhaps a reshuffle of other teams is in order. If there's someone who is left over The City Watch would need a replacement for Jocelyn.

message 36: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Oh, Kahlan, I hadn't noticed that the wizards in your group were put under a spell and had all disappeared. I looked it over teamwise and I think it would be easiest if we just make one simple adjustment. And that would be to transfer Kahlan to the Witches of Lancre. The Assasins Guild and the City Watch are both sorted even though the City Watch has misplaced one of its members. The Wee Free Men is almost sorted. So it would be unfair to mess too much with these 3 groups. We have to many active members to make it 3 groups so we do need 4 and then it would be easiest to put everyone in the Witches of Lancre. If the inactive people do decide to become active they will be reassigned too.
If everyone is happy with this solution I will change the teams.

Ok next problem:) Lauren. We thought it to be an extra challenge for everyone to decide on 10 tasks and stick with them. It shouldn't be too hard, just find tasks you are most likely to read. You don't have to deicde on a book yet. But for example since Lu and I are both archaeologists it is likely we would read a book about ancient Egypt. Since Crusader reads a lot of science fiction he is most likely to read a book about an artificial or non-bniological life-form. We don't know yet which book it is going to be but it is likely that somewhere in the coming year we will read it. If it makes it to hard we can say that any member can swap 2 tasks around during the year but I am not in favour of throwing out the rule that you have to pick before we start, unless there are more people who want to do this.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok, I have changed the teams. Lu could you lock the discussion on the Unseen University? Thanks! Since I am not a moderater I cannot do it myself. I don't want to delete the discussion yet because we might need it again in the future. Also Lu could you make it so that this discussion is one of the primary ones you know with a star so it stays on the top of the list. Maybe people will want their own thread to plan and that makes it easier to find this one. Again Thank you!

Yeah Lauren I know it is hard to stick with your plans but it is only 10 books so it should be do-able. With most challenges you have to stick with at least 25 tasks. At least for you individual challenge you can choose from the other 30 and you can leave half out. So that should make it more fun. I think this is one of the few challenges where you are not obligated to read every task to complete it.

How will the book updates work? Do we just post in our respective team threads when we've completed a book?

message 48: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Yes, please update in your own team discussion saying something like:
completed task 25 for team challenge
or
completed task 12 for individual challenge
or
completed task 37 for both individual and team challenge
If you do it like this it will save me lots of time and trouble figuring out what you have finished and for what. I will then update in the points discussions and upgrade ranks.

message 49: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Since The City Watch is one member short can the rest of the tasks be free-for-all for the other group members?

That'll mean that whoever reads an appropriate book can claim that task for the group.

message 50: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith If that's the case, then the remaining tasks should be split evenly - members can read an extra 3 tasks each, with one person reading 4.

If you get a new member, then you should hand those tasks over to that person, and the tasks would no longer count as read.

Perhaps wait a little longer to see if someone else comes along? Even if you've already read something that counts, you can still add it later.
