If you are submitting a story to the CR anothology "Christmas Lites"

Hi Amy. Phil Cantrill is submitting a tale titled, unimaginatively, "Christmas Story".
Tentatively "School of the Ages: Goldberry vs. Santa Claus". I am still in an early draft! - Matt Posner
You'll have to buy the book! It's freaking good though.;) now no more chatter or Amy will have a cow ! ;)
TBH I think it will at least make a certain amount just if everyone who contributed buys one!...and their mums and their dads etc etc etc...

Count me half in because I have a tax return to do and a novel to finish so although I should but it may not happen. That might be a good name for my short, too... I should but it may not happen, I mean. Cheers

Corking? This is a good thing, right? Haha!

I'm pretty sure. I'm still learning British slang too;)
heheheh yes it is! Corking or stonking mean...er.. quite tremendous, but in a sense of full-on. God, that's actually really difficult to define! I have no idea where it comes from but has all the sense of movement, sense of some force (but not excessive) and sense of celebration of a champagne cork zipping across the room!
Any Brits out there think I'm talking nonsense, please do re-define!
(Please!)

In the US, "corking!" is an old expression. We replaced it with "groovy", then "gnarly", and now it's....well, I don't know what it is now because I am old :).
IN the NorthEast, they still say things are "wicked _____ " Just insert that second word, whatever it may be. Bad, hot, cold, good. It's an all-encompassing adjective.

Yeh I'd say that corking or stonking are polite ways of being able to say f&&&&ng brilliant without needing to use the sweary bit, so um... yes, quite strong.Cheers

Unlucky Dip Prequel to Few Are Chosen
sadly not free on any Amazons but still free on smashwords.
Gnarly! Phnark! Splitter, that's class. I think we said 'bear' for a while although it meant 'very'. That's the last piece of street I knew.
concur, Gnarly is excellent!! I've heard "Wicked" on its own, and some kids the other day saying "Nang, man! It's da bomb!" which from context I took to mean "Spiffing, chaps, I am quite taken with this artefact"...heheheh

Corking is good then. :-) TY for the explanations. Someday, I hope 'crunchy' makes it into someone's vernacular as meaning wicked-corking-cool. 'This book is crunchy good!' There's no love for crunchy ... hahahahahaha!
I have been looking for the etymology of "corking" but have found nothing. I understand things like "shoot your wad" and "going off half cocked" so I am sort of a geek about the origins of words and phrases. If anyone knows where "corking" came from, it would save me some sleepless time...

Now this is a corking thread! Sorry, I'm not sure I used the word correctly right there, but just wanted to give it a go.
Anyway, it might be worth a shot at trying to bring corking back to the US (the word, of course).
What was the original subject of this thread anyway?

Christmas anthology thread ,,,,
Rich, I just looked it up in the urban dictionary and it's prob best not to! I've never heard it used to mean that though(and frankly I think that definition was made up by a group of 13 year old boys trying to out-rude each other) as originally it came from slang in the 1870s or thereabouts....just can't find quite where!! Anyone subscribed to the OED? They're usually good for etymological queries.

Sorry Jen/Cambria,I was just joking when I asked what the subject of the thread was. I was getting a kick out of the conversation.
I guess I'm getting off subject again. No more from me on anything other than the anthology.
Which, btw, I guess I never listed my short story title- 'Memories of the Splendid Splinter'.
There, back on point.
Sorry Jenn - I forgot an 'n' on my previous message. Just another example of how difficult it is to edit my books/short stories. I make way too many mistakes.
