in queasy half sleep.
On dun sheets, tousled,
shapely, Cheri sprawled, the firm’s
new secretary,
a scent of nectar
in her hair. Then I recalled
how she’d gotten there,
her after-work smile,
the hotel bar, how late we’d
staggered to my car,
the insects mobbing
a streetlight, a sax’s wail
in the August night.
