Sorry, but need to pick your brains

Hello everyone. I was hoping one of you can help me. I read a fantasy series a while back, it was a mainstream publication, slightly unusual but very good. Unfortunately I cannot remember the author (or titles, oops). It had a bowyer/fletcher theme, and one key scene involves the main protagonist making a bow out of his nephew's rip bones. I'm sure many of you know the series, it's been driving me crazy, can you help please?
