Vroo | 2 comments This seems to me to be a modern day problem. I think that the bible should be taken as a whole and not picked apart to give authority for something. Maybe you should read and consider before completly rejecting all the information you can find. 1 Timothy 3:14-15 reads

11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

God does not give women the authority to be over "Man." This does not mean that women cannot participate in the ministry such as children’s services or in a setting with other women. It just does not give a woman authority to teach men. If you take one part of the bible to apply it to your situation then you are doing yourself a disservice. Chapter 13 also continues Paul's teachings saying that this is how we should conduct ourselves in the church of the living God.

Riley (booksarecool) So you're saying that we should take it as an example of how to behave in church?

message 104: by Vroo (new)

Vroo | 2 comments I'm not saying anything. I am just passing along the word of God. The Bible is not to be taken in parts but as a whole. In order to get the full meaning you must read further.

okay, i have a huge problem with this, vroo. in my mind, the bible is not a resource for literal information. it's the same thing when people try to take information about gay marriage out of it. if you are going to take the bible literally, then why don't you sacrifice your cow properly, or whatever? if you are going to take it literally, then fine. but you have to take the WHOLE THING literally. like you said, you can't pick it apart. so, my question for you: do you sacrifice heifers and lambs? as the bible says?

message 109: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) ok i dont think ANYONE sacrifices lambs or heifers anymore. okay maybe the most remote part of the planet. but no where else. i think animal sacrifice is an awful thing. just because god is an ego maniac who enjoys watching baby animals suffer* doesnt mean we have to do the dirty work for him. if he is all powerful, why doesnt he swoop down and do it himself???

*kidding, kidding. but not about the animal sacrifice. that is truly awful.

Emma the Dork wrote: "ok i dont think ANYONE sacrifices lambs or heifers anymore. okay maybe the most remote part of the planet. but no where else. i think animal sacrifice is an awful thing. just because god is an ego ..."

emma, i was not talking about sacrificing cows, ok? it was A METAPHOR, aka SYMBOLISM, aka NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY. my point was exactly that which you said- no one sacrifices cows anymore, something the bible often mentions as on the the top of your weekly to do list. so, if you are going to be like the rest of the world and not sacrifice animals, then you shouldn't take any other part of the bible that literally. it should be only a spiritual reference, in my opinion.

message 111: by [deleted user] (new)

Because Vroo was saying that women should be able to preach, and Eliza was sayng that if your going to take the bible seriously take all of it seriously. Both which i agree with even though im an atheist.

message 130: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Landers (mnlanders) It's ridiculous that in this day and age, people still think that women shouldn't be allowed to or can't do certain things that men can't. It's disgusting, really. I figured that at least by 2009, it would be recognized that women can do anything a man can do (possibly even better, lol). Apparently, some people are still stuck in the 1800's.

message 131: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) yeah, its really obnoxious. thats why i hate most rap, even though they are really catchy, its really sexist and perverted, almost all of it.

message 132: by Liz (new)

Liz In my religion, Catholicism, women are not allowed to be ordained because of all those things John was talking about with god being a man, etc. I however, majorly disagree with the church on that front. Its ridiculous that sexism is still here. Its the twenty first century!
think about it:
1)in some churches, women cannot be priests or deacons
2)there has never been a female pope
3)in the USA, one of the most developed countries which gives women rights and is not bound to the idea that women are secondary, has never had a female president.
4)Women in the Us gained the right to vote less than a hundred years ago
Its sad...

In my religion, they aren't allowed to do it because the preisthood is the authority to act in God's name.

message 134: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Landers (mnlanders) Seth wrote: "In my religion, they aren't allowed to do it because the preisthood is the authority to act in God's name."

And I'm not really saying that it's wrong, wrong, wrong that women can't do those things, I'm just saying that it's my opinion that women can and should be allowed to do anything a man can do. I don't care if people think that a man should do the job because supposedly, the story is, God is a man. We're all PEOPLE; people that are supposedly considered equal? Psh. I think not.

If we were all equal, then we wouldn't even have discussion such as these. It's stupid that we have debates over things like this, but I guess it's just one of those flaws that we have. Many men seem to think that women can't do what they can, and they refuse and don't want to believe that we can do anything.

Okay, I'm done ranting now.

Seth wrote: "In my religion, they aren't allowed to do it because the preisthood is the authority to act in God's name."

so, Seth, you are saying women don't have the authority to act in god's name? cause i seriously disagree.

Melissa and liz, i totally agree with you.

message 136: by Liz (new)

Liz Eliza, thats how it is in my church. Its a very traditional way of thinking.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

i get that, liz. i'm not disputing it. i did, you know, just say i agreed with you....:)

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

message 142: by Liz (new)

Liz so because some people think god is male, only men who are males like god, should preach? i don't get it...

message 143: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) yeah. has anyone ever actually MET god? noooooo!!!! and in the torah, (which is the same as the bible except in hebrew) it says, "god is not he or she, but one" or something like that. i am not jewish but i have been to mat mitzvahs so yeah....

Liz Emma the Dork wrote: "yeah. has anyone ever actually MET god? noooooo!!!! and in the torah, (which is the same as the bible except in hebrew) it says, "god is not he or she, but one" or something like that. i am not jew..."

the torah is actually not the same as the bible, its just the old testament, not the new testament as jews don't believe in jesus in the same way christians do.

message 148: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) then shoot me. its not like i have read one word of the bible, thats just what i heard. and if its not the same, its pretty darn similar.

message 149: by Liz (new)

Liz its actually not that similar, the torah has half the content the bible does. i've read them both.

message 150: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments yeah the Quran is the old testament as well. But muslims believe that jesus was a prophet, and not gods son. They also believe that mohammed was the last prophet.
