Bad epidural. Doctor had to stick me 3 times and kept muttering, "Oh, Sh**". I wonder if he was drunk. Headaches for almost 6 months.

Sans Ugh, feel free to kick me out of the buddy read. I didn't get a lunch break today (that's when I usually read) and came home with a headache that's been trying to morph into a migraine all evening. I haven't read and I won't be prepared to post questions tomorrow. Could someone take over my chapters? I'll try and catch up by next week. >_<

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Questions for Chapters 1- 5

1) Does this book remind you of any other book? The beginning with Amelia describing herself as wandering and then ending up in her grave sort of reminded me of another book, I believe it was A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb.

Nothing jumps to mind.

2) Why do you think Joshua's heart started beating again?

I think that somehow the touch from Amelia was able to bring him back or at least will him to keep trying.

3) Do you think Amelia should have told Joshua she was dead?

I think that's a delicate subject that takes a bit more explaining then a simple declaration. I'm hoping she tells him soon, but probably shouldn't have happened at the river. Maybe at the park?

4) Do you think Amelia killed herself?

Based on the opening storyline it seems that way. I'd like to believe it was something else though, something she just can't remember.

5) What did you think of Eli? Do you think she should trust him?

I think Eli is the bad guy in this story (at least the summary makes it sound that way).

6) Do you like the writing style so far?

I can't say it's my favorite, but it's not terrible. We'll see how it progresses.

7) First thoughts of the book after reading the first 5 chapters? Do you like it? Is it keeping your interest?

I'm not super enthralled in the book yet, but I'll keep reading. Also not super into romance, so not my typical book (I know, one of the few in this group that doesn't like romance). There isn't anything in particular that has caught my attention so far, so I'm still waiting for the hook moment. Although the hereafter sounded interesting with how it was described.

Favorite Quotes:

"I shook my head. I was being ridiculous. After all, I was dead. What could be scarier than me?" ~22

If you really can't find anyone I could probably post questions tomorrow, although they most likely won't be posted until later in the evening (I work a 12 hour shift tomorrow) so would prefer if someone else could, but don't want the group to be questionless :-P

2. We find out that Amelia did indeed commit suicide. Does that affect your view of her as a character?

3. I find it interesting that Amelia picked out such a flashy dress for a suicide jump. Thoughts?

4. Why do you think Amelia hasn't seen any other ghosts? Was it only because she was still "lost"?

5. Do you think that Joshua's school is the same school Amelia used to go to?

Lisarenee | 7659 comments Questions for Chapter 6-9

1. Why do you think Amelia is so afraid of Eli from the start? Doesn't she want to know more about her kind?

I think his appearance made her a little leery of him. Plus, she's fascinated with Joshua.

2. We find out that Amelia did indeed commit suicide. Does that affect your view of her as a character?

It makes you wonder what happened.

3. I find it interesting that Amelia picked out such a flashy dress for a suicide jump. Thoughts?

Makes me wonder again what happened. Could it have been a prom or a school dance and something happened?

4. Why do you think Amelia hasn't seen any other ghosts? Was it only because she was still "lost"?

Not sure. Can't wait to find out.

5. Do you think that Joshua's school is the same school Amelia used to go to?

Didn't they say she was home schooled in the scene with the telescope? I'll need to check that again.

Yeah, a bit like this book I was reading to review Touch by Jennifer Snyder

2) Why do you think Joshua's heart started beating again?

I'd like to think it was because he saw her.

3) Do you think Amelia should have told Joshua she was dead?

Not yet, too early I think.

4) Do you think Amelia killed herself?

It certainly seems so.

5) What did you think of Eli? Do you think she should trust him?

No, she shouldn't trust him but yuh-uhm-my!

6) Do you like the writing style so far?

He seems weird and not totally sane. She can't trust him.

2. We find out that Amelia did indeed commit suicide. Does that affect your view of her as a character?

Hmmm.. not really.

3. I find it interesting that Amelia picked out such a flashy dress for a suicide jump. Thoughts?

Maybe its got something to do with rape?

4. Why do you think Amelia hasn't seen any other ghosts? Was it only because she was still "lost"?

I think its because there aren't any ghosts around.

5. Do you think that Joshua's school is the same school Amelia used to go to?

Yeah, I kinda do.

1. I found the description about Josh's home to mean that he's rich, instead of the feeling that it was homey as the author wanted me to feel. What do you think?

I took it to mean homey, but sounds like he has a large yard.

2. So why do you think she looks she's glowing to Joshua? May his feelings for her play a part?

I don't know why she'd glow. That is curious. Is it a trait of all ghosts or could she be special in a way we haven't heard yet? I hadn't considered it having something to do with his or perhaps even her feelings. That is an interesting thought.

3. Josh seems to take everything in stride-she's dead: okay! she glows: creepy but okay. It bugs me. And you?

I'm okay with it so far, but now that you mention it he is a little bit too easy going.

4. Did you guys anticipate Ruth also being able to see Amelia? I had a feeling she might.

Nope, didn't see that one coming.

5. Found the description of Netherworld lacking. You guys?

Yep, but did we get the whole picture yet? Probably not. We'll have to see if we get more later.

6. The souls help Eli in "big missions". What could those be?

I wondered the same thing. Could he try to take good souls and could that have played a part in Amelia's death?

7. My favorite part:
“My parents’ names are Rebecca and Jeremiah, by the way,” he whispered as I approached him.
I laughed, jittery. “Got it. So even though they’ll be too busy screaming at you, and they can’t hear me anyway, I’ll at least be able to address them

Yours?

That was cute. I don't know yet what my favorite quote or part is yet. Usually it's not until the end that I dwell on something that has been said. Occasionally something will hit me all at once, but not often.

1) Sounds like Jillian has the gift. So why doesn't Jillian's and Joshua's father? Is it he hasn't been awakened? If so why is is that Jillian is already showing signs of seeing?

2) Do you think it's wise of Joshua and Amelia to get romantically involved? I mean how is that going to work?

3) They now know Amelia is definitely dead. I was hoping she was in a coma or something. I guess waking up in a grave was proof enough she wasn't alive any more. Did anyone else hope there was a way out of her being dead?

4) When they went into Amelia's mom's house did anyone think they'd get caught?

5) Anyone else wondering what happened to her father? Could he have died when she did?

6) What do you think Joshua will think of Amelia disappearing on him?

7) Anyone else having a hard time not reading ahead? I'm really enjoying the book. Anyone else?

1) Sounds like Jillian has the gift. So why doesn't Jillian's and Joshua's father? Is it he hasn't been awakened? If so why is is that Jillian is already showing signs of seeing?

Maybe it skips a generation? I think that's mentioned somewhere, not sure though. Jilian needs that life-altering event event to activate.

2) Do you think it's wise of Joshua and Amelia to get romantically involved? I mean how is that going to work?

I think you may be channeling Ruth :-p But they have to try or we wouldn't have a story.

3) They now know Amelia is definitely dead. I was hoping she was in a coma or something. I guess waking up in a grave was proof enough she wasn't alive any more. Did anyone else hope there was a way out of her being dead?

Nope, I like her dead. Eli comes to visit that way.

4) When they went into Amelia's mom's house did anyone think they'd get caught?

I wanted them to. Didn't happen.

5) Anyone else wondering what happened to her father? Could he have died when she did?

Yeah, I did too. But read ahead for that.

6) What do you think Joshua will think of Amelia disappearing on him?

He should get that she isn't a normal girl. Hullooo a ghost..remember Josh?

7) Anyone else having a hard time not reading ahead? I'm really enjoying the book. Anyone else?

Yeah, already finished it for the read-a-thin. It did keep my interest.

8) I must admit the Eli angle still has me wondering. I think that could make or break the book. Thoughts?

It could but as I said it wasn't utilized properly.

1. I found the description about Josh's home to mean that he's rich, instead of the feeling that it was homey as the author wanted me to feel. What do you think?

I agree. It sounded extravagant, not homey.

2. So why do you think she looks she's glowing to Joshua? May his feelings for her play a part?

I think there's a magic bond between Joshua and Amelia that causes her to see her in a different way then most. Or it may just be that he finds her so beautiful that he sees her as glowing.

3. Josh seems to take everything in stride-she's dead: okay! she glows: creepy but okay. It bugs me. And you?

It's strange yes, but after almost dying I think he's more willing to believe then the average person. Just like people with near death experiences believe they see angels or what not.

4. Did you guys anticipate Ruth also being able to see Amelia? I had a feeling she might.

I thought she'd be able to. It's interesting that Joshua is part of a line of seers so his seeing Amelia may not really be because he nearly died after all.

5. Found the description of Netherworld lacking. You guys?

Yes! The hereafter seems like it should be a big part of the story but we're in chapter 12 and have barely heard anything about it. I wants more!

6. The souls help Eli in "big missions". What could those be?

Getting other souls? Kind of reminds me of ghost ship (the movie) and the guys need to collect souls to take to hell.

1) Sounds like Jillian has the gift. So why doesn't Jillian's and Joshua's father? Is it he hasn't been awakened? If so why is is that Jillian is already showing signs of seeing?

They said that some event causes your ability to see to being working, so maybe before this event you can catch traces?

2) Do you think it's wise of Joshua and Amelia to get romantically involved? I mean how is that going to work?

I don't think it's wise seeing as how there's nothing normal about the relationship. I mean, Joshua has already been caught "talking to himself" on several occasions.

3) They now know Amelia is definitely dead. I was hoping she was in a coma or something. I guess waking up in a grave was proof enough she wasn't alive any more. Did anyone else hope there was a way out of her being dead?

I guess other options never really crossed my mind.

4) When they went into Amelia's mom's house did anyone think they'd get caught?

I thought it was strange that Joshua went inside. Amelia can get in without being caught so you'd think that he would just open the door for her and let her go. Although, I guess she wouldn't have been able to see into her room if he did it that way.

5) Anyone else wondering what happened to her father? Could he have died when she did?

Yea, I wish that had showed a date of when her dad died. Based on how the ribbons were displayed I assume they died at near the same time.

6) What do you think Joshua will think of Amelia disappearing on him?

I wonder if she physically disappears when she goes into the nightmare of her death. Is she actually reliving it? Or just a memory flash?

7) Anyone else having a hard time not reading ahead? I'm really enjoying the book. Anyone else?

I wouldn't say I'm super drawn to this book, but I have no reason to stop reading it either, so I guess I'm in the middle somewhere.

8) I must admit the Eli angle still has me wondering. I think that could make or break the book. Thoughts?

I think things are going to get a whole lot more complicated as the book continues.

1. Why doesn't Amelia tell Joshua about Eli?

I dunno, its the classic heroine not telling the male lead about the bad boy. What have countless movies and books taught us about this? Doing that is stupid!

2. You'd think Ruth and her coven would use Amelia to try to get to Eli. Why banish her right away?

They believe they have mad Eli banishing skills?

3. What other abilities do you think the ghosts can have?

I think we're being made to understand that some abilities are commonplace while others are specific to each ghost.

4. What do you think Eli expects Amelia's special ability to be?

He wants Amelia to join him, so it has to be something that can keep souls in the Netherworld.

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Questions for chapters 20 - 22

1) Do you think Eli was trying to impress Amelia by telling her he was in a rock band?

Yes. I think he wanted her to realize he was once human and a cool one at that.

2) Do you think the story gives us a better understanding of Eli? After hearing about what happened to Eli what is your impression of him?

I think Eli doesn't fully understand how to handle things. He's so used to all the souls he collects doing anything that he wants that now he can't understand free will or how it works. That's how he keeps chasing these girls away.

3) What do you think about Melissa and the story of her?

It's interesting to know that there is another choice of where to go after death. It makes sense that there would be other parts of the Hereafter seeing as how this one seems to be specific for High Road Bridge, but I wouldn't think that someone that died on high road would have the ability to join a different sector or what not.

4) So now we learn Amelia didn't commit suicide. Someone pushed her off the bridge. Are you surprised?

Not particularly. As the story progressed it seemed more and more likely that there was something strange about Amelia's death. I wouldn't be surprised if Eli somehow played a part in her dying.

5) What do you think Eli meant when he said he picked her before she died? That sounds kind of sinister.

I think he saw her and had to have her so he helped kill her. His description of attempting to collect Joshua's soul shows that he must have some influence over the living that pass through.

6) What do you think of Eli's declaration that they are fated for one another? Why do you think Eli's touch and kiss hurt her?

Eli is mistaken. Amelia is obviously fated for Joshua now since his touch brings pleasure while Eli's brings pain. Wish it was that easy to know who to be with in real life :-P

7)Do you think things would have been different if it had been Eli who awakened Amelia?

Possibly. I think the awakening process is probably the key to how someone will act in the after life. Eli was angry when he died and therefore was easy to turn to evil. Melissa was awoken too early and therefore knew there had to be more. And Amelia was woken by Joshua and therefore drawn to him and not Eli.

P.S. - Holy cow cliffhanger :-P

1) Do you think Eli was trying to impress Amelia by telling her he was in a rock band?

Maybe or maybe he was just trying to make her see him as a human being.

2) Do you think the story gives us a better understanding of Eli? After hearing about what happened to Eli what is your impression of him?

Still the same:yummy, shallow and without morals

3) What do you think about Melissa and the story of her?

Its just weird.

4) So now we learn Amelia didn't commit suicide. Someone pushed her off the bridge. Are you surprised?

Not really. I didn't think too much about how she died anyway.

5) What do you think Eli meant when he said he picked her before she died? That sounds kind of sinister.

Yep, stalker-creepy sinister.

6) What do you think of Eli's declaration that they are fated for one another? Why do you think Eli's touch and kiss hurt her?

I think Amelia's power somehow makes ghosts substantial.. Of course, he'd say that they're meant for each other but I don't buy it.

7)Do you think things would have been different if it had been Eli who awakened Amelia?

Totally. He already changed a lot of things by (view spoiler)

Talk about a section with a lot going on.

1) Could Amelia have been a seer before her death? If we saw what she did before her death then she could see him.

2) Did Amelia time travel back to the time of her own death or did she just visualize it? If she time traveled could she change her fate?

3) Amelia's death was definitely creepy. A whole bunch of kids possessed at a party. Do you think Eli orchestrated the whole party with his whispers in the right ears hoping to find his potential apprentice?

4) What do you think Amelia's powers entail? Anomander seemed to hit on it in the last set of question when she stated, "I think Amelia's power somehow makes ghosts substantial..." Do you think she it the head on the nail or do you think there's more to her powers?

5) Do you think Amelia's father is in Eli's otherworld?

6) Were you surprised that Ruth listened to Joshua and Amelia?

7) What did you think when you heard Eli picked Amelia because her eyes reminded him of Melissa's?

8) Question about Eli--Do you like, dislike, or really don't have an opinion about the way Eli looks? Do you think his appearance is a little too stereotypical of a bad guy--dressed in black looking like a rocker?

9) Do you think Amelia's declaration of love for Joshua is a little too soon?

10) Do you think like Amelia that Eli isn't evil just misguided?

11) Do you think Jillian will survive?

Talk about a section with a lot going on.

1) Could Amelia have been a seer before her death? If we saw what she did before her death then she could see him.

It might have been that Eli had selected her for death and therefore she was able to catch a glimpse of him? Or maybe Eli has the ability to reveal himself? Doubtful but options.

2) Did Amelia time travel back to the time of her own death or did she just visualize it? If she time traveled could she change her fate?

Pretty sure it was a flash like all of the others. It seems that as her memories flood back she feels as if she's in them vs just watching them.

3) Amelia's death was definitely creepy. A whole bunch of kids possessed at a party. Do you think Eli orchestrated the whole party with his whispers in the right ears hoping to find his potential apprentice?

Yes. I think he needed someone and the best way to find someone was to bring a ton of people to his place and make his choice.

4) What do you think Amelia's powers entail? Anomander seemed to hit on it in the last set of question when she stated, "I think Amelia's power somehow makes ghosts substantial..." Do you think she it the head on the nail or do you think there's more to her powers?

That makes sense. I mean she has the ability to make Eli bleed when he's never had that happen before. I'm entirely sure what it is though.

5) Do you think Amelia's father is in Eli's otherworld?

I think her father ended up where Melissa went, in another hereafter. I think Eli would have figured out Amelia's father and used him against her somehow if he had been with Eli the whole time.

6) Were you surprised that Ruth listened to Joshua and Amelia?

Not really. I figured eventually Ruth would help with the fiasco and banish Eli (which could still happen in the last few chapters). I think Ruth is more worried about the safety of her family then anything and therefore was willing to let Amelia go attempt to help.

7) What did you think when you heard Eli picked Amelia because her eyes reminded him of Melissa's?

I wonder if Amelia and Melissa are connected in another way. A past life? Family members?

8) Question about Eli--Do you like, dislike, or really don't have an opinion about the way Eli looks? Do you think his appearance is a little too stereotypical of a bad guy--dressed in black looking like a rocker?

I find his appearance comical, especially the open shirt and the gold chains. His personality in death definitely seems to go well with what I imagine his personality in life was like.

9) Do you think Amelia's declaration of love for Joshua is a little too soon?

Love always seems to come too soon in YA novels so I've come to expect it. I think that's the only word Amelia can really use to explain the phenomena of being around Joshua.

10) Do you think like Amelia that Eli isn't evil just misguided?

Possibly. He was brought into his powerful position as soon as he came out of the fog. I think Amelia probably would have been similar had she met Eli before Joshua. It's all in the information you've been given.

11) Do you think Jillian will survive?

I don't think there's a way for her to survive after cracking her head open. The only way she survives is if Amelia has some supernatural ability that can bring her back to life. But then again, didn't she do that by touching Joshua in the water?

2. Do you think Amelia's words are actually what saved Jillian? Or just coincidental?

3. Do you think Eli had anything to do with Jillian not dying?

4. Did you feel bad for Eli as he was taken away by the woman?

5. Were you surprised to here that this was an actual entrance to hell?

6. When do you think Jillian saw Eli? At the party?

7. Do you think the hereafter has changed now that High Bridge is broken? Will they find someone to take Eli's place?

8. Why is Jillian pretending Amelia doesn't exist? Wouldn't she be thankful that Amelia helped save her life?

9. Any other thoughts on how it ended?

1) Could Amelia have been a seer before her death? If we saw what she did before her death then she could see him.

Hmmm..interesting notion. Might be.

2) Did Amelia time travel back to the time of her own death or did she just visualize it? If she time traveled could she change her fate?

Just a flash, as Jex said.

3) Amelia's death was definitely creepy. A whole bunch of kids possessed at a party. Do you think Eli orchestrated the whole party with his whispers in the right ears hoping to find his potential apprentice?

Yep, totally Eli.

4) What do you think Amelia's powers entail? Anomander seemed to hit on it in the last set of question when she stated, "I think Amelia's power somehow makes ghosts substantial..." Do you think she it the head on the nail or do you think there's more to her powers?

I think she was correct about that ;-)

5) Do you think Amelia's father is in Eli's otherworld?

Jex may be right about it but I keep thinking Amelia's father must know he was leaving his wife behind. Unfinished business= haunting, right?

6) Were you surprised that Ruth listened to Joshua and Amelia?

No but I was surprised when Ruth was such a b*tch to Amelia.

7) What did you think when you heard Eli picked Amelia because her eyes reminded him of Melissa's?

That he was an ass?

8) Question about Eli--Do you like, dislike, or really don't have an opinion about the way Eli looks? Do you think his appearance is a little too stereotypical of a bad guy--dressed in black looking like a rocker?

I like him way more than I like Joshua. Stereotypical but I like it.

9) Do you think Amelia's declaration of love for Joshua is a little too soon?

What Jex said.

10) Do you think like Amelia that Eli isn't evil just misguided?

He's selfish which makes it easier prey for evil.

11) Do you think Jillian will survive?

Yep, she will. Its too soon for her to die. Its just the first book people!

Yikes! Think of the incestuous possibilities!
