SOLVED. Story of a man who planned to live until broke then commit suicide. [s]

When I was in high school, a long time ago, I read story about a man who measured out his savings with the plan of living a certain number of years comfortably and then ending his life. When the time came for him to commit suicide, he didn't have the nerve and continued living in abject and desperate poverty.

I'm trying to find that story/book. I think it may be particularly relevant in today's society and economy.
