Re: 1849
Hey Todd, i tried Second Life out a couple years ago. i think the usefulness and usage by corporations is overstated. It's primarily a bunch of teenagers screwing around, being obnoxious, and creating dirty avatars. Bands have performed gigs there, but i think that level of performance is uncommon and not a growing phenomenon. Social media is where the web 3.0 growth is going to be. You'd be better suited tailoring your website so that people can "Like" your book and share it with their friends on Facebook than bothering with Second Life.

Thanks David. With my limited experience I agree. Even with "book island" where authors can do readings of their books and have "stores" I saw no one visiting there.

I think the big drawback with a virtual world is that it is real time vs. blogs and such that folks read on their own time and reply when they can. For a virtual world, if you want to have a conversation, meeting, or otherwise, everyone must be there at the same time (though I think there are videos that can be posted but hey that is what you tube is for).

So, I'm not spending time on this unless someone else has cracked this nut.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cynthia Enuton (gooberella) | 56 comments Hi Todd,

I;ve played around on second life as well. It's a real cool concept with great graphics. But the places I traveld did not have many people, and the people it did have walked around confused like I was...lol. I also noticed within the shopping district there were clothes to purchase so needless to say I didn't go shopping. Lots of advertisment and it appears that you can buy somewhat of a bill board to advertise your goods. I thought about posting my book cover but then again since I did run into alot of people, who would see my book cover? I also discovered a vampire world that had a vampire magizine people could write for, there were about a dozen of those people but they were not too friendly to a newbie asking questions. My favoriate thing was going to the horse stables, hoping on a horse and taking a ride to anywhere I wanted...a horse moves fast through the different worlds and the graphics were beautiful, but you only get 3 free rides...after the 3 freebies then you have to pay. On my last freebie I must have stayed up all nite riding my horse all over the place because I didn't want it to end! That was about a year ago, I haven't been back on since so I'm not sure if things picked up since then.
I would like to know more about it as well because it seemed like a very cool concept and I'm surprised that it hasn't become huge.

Cynthia,
Thanks for the info on SL. I can see where it would become addicting (I spent some time at the AMD booth solving clues to try to win a computer. Strange though no one else was there...

There is something intriguing about it but I'm not sure yet how to make it practical or more effective than other avenues. I think i won't totally abandon yet but will spend less than 5% of my marketing time there unless I see something starting to connect. I did meet a Second Life book publisher that "publishes" ebooks to be read in second life environment but again not too sure how practical this is unless it fuses with something like the IPAD (which i think is in process).

Todd Fonseca | 489 comments For those of you not on the facebook TMBOA group, I'm trying to increase "tagging compliance" on the TMBOA site and am thinking of requiring folks to tag a number of books before getting listed. I'd like your feedback via a poll/comment on the site. Please stop by and vote!

Robert | 34 comments On the surface, I like the idea. Even I am guilty of tagging only a few books after some 60 people tagged mine. THANK YOU ALL. To retag 60 is a chore, I understand but we can all do more. And your site makes it about as easy as it gets.
Todd you have a dilemma. If you want compliance then yes require at least 5-10 author tags however if you want more people to register at your site, forced tagging might hinder you.

Dave Cullen (davecullen) | 11 comments Very nice. I checked out the site, tagged a bunch of the authors and was stunned to see what an impact it had. Pretty impressive.

Now I wish I had added my book to history. I thought that would be out of range. I don't like thinking of it as true crime, but I figure that people interested in that are some of my likely buyers.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for ways to get my book trailer some attention. That's REALLY hard.

Dave Cullen (davecullen) | 11 comments Thanks Gooberella.

It was a brilliant filmmaker--one of the South Park guys. He asked me the same questions over and over in different ways and found ways to get the jitters out of me. (This including having me driving, and filming while I was distracted by the road. I think I was my most at ease there, but it also loosened me up for the rest.)

Then he took a full day of me blabbing and created a 3-minute story out of it. I was stunned by what he put together. Talented guy. I was lucky.

Hi Nanette - I tried finding your profile on Amazon but was not able to (I found your author page but not your profile - when you buy books on Amazon is it under a different name?)

Tagging steps:

1. Log on to your Amazon account (must have purchased at least one item from this Amazon account for tags to show up publicly).

2. Go to the book's page you plan to tag.

3. There should be boxes next to each tag listed - for the tag you agree with just check the box (an orange check should appear). Here's what the section on Amazon will state: "Check the boxes next to the tags you consider relevant or enter your own tags in the field below."

4. If you don't want to check the boxes next to the tags, you can also enter tags in the section just after the check boxes by typing them in. It says "Your Tags:" followed by an open box. Here enter tags separated by commas then hit the "add" button.

Either 3 or 4 will work. Do not do both on the same book or it will add then subtract the same tags.

I hope that helps.

Todd

Harrie Rose (harrierose) | 9 comments Allison Boozer, the marketing person for Amazon's Booksurge and Create/Space publishing, told me that to get your book favorably situated, you only have to have people click on it. You don't need to tag, but you do need 1500 or more clicks. So, please go to Amazon Books, search for Harrie Rose Therapy:A Novel and when the book appears in the list, click on it to open the page.n That is all that is needed. No tagging.

message 1778: by Harrie (new)

Harrie Rose (harrierose) | 9 comments Rowena;

According to Allison Boozer of Amazon Marketing, the best way to get your book favorable situated is to have clicks on it. Tags aren't necessary. Also, the nuumber of reviews your book gets If you go to Amazon Books and search for Harrie Rose Therapy:A Novel, when the list come up, just click on nthe book cover and let the page of the books site open up. That is enough.. You need 1500 or more clicks.

Gwen Mayo (gwenmayo) | 18 comments Hi everyone. I am new to Amazon Connect and trying to learn my way around. Any suggestions on what I should be doing with the account?

message 1780: by Harrie (new)

Harrie Rose (harrierose) | 9 comments As I said in my last comment, Allison Boozer, the Marketing head at CreateSpace, Amazon's self-publishing told me it is necessary only to click on someone's book. You don't have to tag it, although tags, and especially reviews count very much on placement The reviews don't have to be all 5 star. It's the number you get that counts.

Please go to Amazon and search for Harrie Rose. Her book is Therapy:A Novel When it shows on the list, that pops up, please click on the cover
.
If anybody can tell me how to set up a page for people to list books they want others to click on such as the existing list for Tag my Book, then I will be happy to create the page.

Harrie Rose (harrierose) | 9 comments I'll click on your book. Allison Bowzer, head of Marketing on Create/Space, Amazon's self-publishing says it's most important to have people click on your book cover. Go to Amazon Books & in the search bar, type in Harrie Rose. Then click on the book cover that comes up. The click is all that is needed. Pass the word around.

Hi Gwen - welcome to tagging! You can also learn more about Amazon connect here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custome...

Regarding Amazon connect...
Your author page looks good, one thing to consider is having your bio written in third person-
http://www.writing-world.com/basics/b...
But there are others who would disagree with me (i'm sure they'll post here!)

If you have a book trailer - add it as well.

You might want to also want to add reviews to your product description with a review using the "update product info" tab.

Good luck and welcome!

Hey Nanette - you start the tagging process by asking! Pick a few tags you would specifically like and post them here with the link and/or on the tagging blog.

The facebook thing sounds odd - give them a call and/or email and ask what the deal is. I haven't heard of that before!
