Maria | 77 comments Hi Rick, there are various communities on Amazon and forums within each community e.g. the family saga community. When someone tags your book it becomes more prominent within that community. For example, at one stage my book A Time To Tell was at no.1 in the family saga community thanks to the tags I got from my goodreads friends. It's now no.2 but this still means it's prominent enough so that when people search products tagged 'family saga' my book will be there. You'll see next to the tag boxes there is a search box, where you can search for items tagged with a certain word.
I'll go and tag your book now :)

Yes, Cynthia there is another much more efficient way of doing it, thanks to Todd. Check out this site:

http://tagmybookonamazon.wordpress.com/t...

Once a month Todd collects all the books people offer him for tagging and puts them together, so you can tag all of one months books in one go. The beauty of it is its simplicity.
A click on the book cover takes you to its Amazon place, where you tag the boxes --
Press the back button to return to Todd's list and the next book to be done.

If you search that tagging list you will find all the other months going back to when he started it. You can tag them at your leisure.

I hope this helps

Cynthia Enuton (gooberella) | 56 comments FANTASTIC! Thanks Carole...your answer helped tremendously! I saw that list but had no idea that if I clicked on the book pic that it would take me to their page! Thats perfect!
Now have one more question just to double check.
When I tag I usually just hit the "I agree with these tags button" and enter my tags that way. Is this correct?

Do we need to relist our books to make the Feb. 2010 book list?

No, you don't have to relist your book. They can only be tagged once by the same person. If you were to go back in and try to tag the same one, it would cancel your previous vote. (by un-ticking it) As for tagging itself - rather than agree 'these tag buttons' tick the actual boxes beside the tags the person has chosen.

Hope this helps,
Carole

Cynthia Enuton (gooberella) | 56 comments ERRRR....now I'm really confused!
I did a search on amazon for dogs, childrens books. Both of those are the tags for my book. I have something like 40 to 50 tags under those 2 catagories however I do not see my book withing the search. When I clicked on some of the other books that came up from that search their tags only had about 5 no more than 10 tags under dogs and childrens book.
Shouldn't the search showed my book (40 to 50 tags under dogs, childrens book) before the other books in which only had 5 to 10 tags under dogs, childrens book?

I'll leave someone else to answer that one, as I don't know the ins and outs of it. Hopefully, we will both learn something!

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments Cynthia,

I am pretty sure the actual number of sales - meaning the popularity of a book is also playing into the search results. No one knows exactly how Amazon is generating their search results. It is a black box as much as Google's search engine is. Having said that, aside form tags and sales there might be even other factors playing into the mix. However, tags are one factor - maybe the only one - that we can actively influence.

Todd Fonseca | 489 comments Cynthia,
This topic of coming up sooner on amazon search has come up many times on the tagging blog. Amazon continues to evolve and change how they do this. It doesn't seem to just be driven by sales.
Part of it is title of the book another part is when the take the book and it becomes part of "search inside" they look (through software) at common phrases used and that then also plays a role in how a book comes up in a search (that's why you usually see phrases highlighted in the books summary that are associated with the search).
What does happen though if you click on one of the "dogs" books that come up is that at the bottom of the book's page Amazon lists other books tagged with "dogs" and then your book should show up there.
Finally, one way to get your book potentially moved up sooner in the search list is to write an email to Amazon telling them why you think your book should show up on the list. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but nothing to lose!
Todd

In addition to tagging, you can probably do "key phrases". Maybe starting a couple of discussions in your book forum about dogs would help.

And, create a listmania or two about dogs.

That should help.

As people are tagging, could they help right an injustice, please.

Tagging is supposed to be about the subject matter of a book, not an opportunity to hurl abuse at an author.

I don't know Candace Sams but she has been the victim of the most appalling flame war and personal attacks.

Could you please take a moment to visit either Amazon's "Insane" community and/or its "Crazy" Community and vote that her book Mr Stellar Fella does not belong.

Or go to her product page, click on "Agree with these tags" and disagree (vote no) for "crazy" and "insane".

crazy insane

Thank you for your help.

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments Wow, that is unbelievable. I am always surprised how mean people can be.

Has anyone else here had this problem?

Thank you, Dianne, Lori, and Guido.

As for your question, Guido, a few months ago, a couple of our group had a similar problem. I think the inappropriate words might have been "idiot" and "spammer". Anyway, if the book is not about idiots or spammers, helpful tags shouldn't give the wrong impression.

Best wishes,
Rowena

message 1424: by Guido (new)

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments Whenever something like this happens I think we should all band together and defeat it. I think in this case of Candace's book we have been pretty successful in defeating the bad tags, though it still takes a few more to really relegate them to obscurity.

But if that ever happened to me I know I would be so thankful for people to help me set it straight.

message 1431: by Alex (new)

Alex | 4 comments I think this should be of interest to anyone who writes novels. Over at Librarything there is a thread that is focusing on "Underappreciated Writers." For an entire month the writer is asked wide-ranging questions about his or her work. The goal is to broaden readership and appreciation of the work, but the questions can be demanding and revealing. By the way, anyone can pose questions to the writer. I was lucky enough to be chosen as the writer for February, and for another 10 days will be answering any and all quetions that come my way. Other writers will be chosen in the months ahead. Dropping in on the thread to ask a question or make a comment may be a good way of introducing yourself. The link to the thread is http://www.librarything.com/topic/82398

By the way if you ever want to take a look at the primary novel being discussed, The Red Album of Asbury Park Remixed, the free PDF is http://www.willcall.org/web/redalbum.pdf

I went on Amazon and tried to tag my book, but it would not take any more than 15 tags. I'm not really sure what "tagging" means, so can someone explain it to me! Duh.... LOL

I've done the Amazon author connect and almost everything else I can think of to market my book, but oh, it is soooooo much work!

message 1437: by Guido (new)

Guido Henkel (guidohenkel) | 130 comments Interestingly I am not sure this whole tagging things works all too well. A week ago one of my titles, "Demon's Night" was coming up as #52 when searching for "gothic horror" being tagged around 35 times.
Today, with well over 50 tags for "gothic horror" the title ends up around #100 for the same search, while my other titles - some of which have under 10 tags, show up around #70 in the search. This is truly bizarre.
