I am overwhelmed by your generosity! Since I retired and the market chose that day to start detonating, I have to live on the money I can make on my writing. The 2 books on Amazon now are by Elaine Chaika. Titles are Language the Social Mirror, 4th ed. and Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Psychotherapy. The nove isn't out yet, but I am hoping for a hit considering the reactions of my readers. Because I don't want people to think it is a Roman a Clef, it will be published by Harrie Rose, titled Therapy: A Novel. What is haunting me is how to get tags for the novel when it comes out. I can think of no other way to direct people to it. I can't afford NY Times ads or the like. It is being self-published by Booksurge. All my other books have been with traditional publishers, none of whom I would ever publish with again.

I am publishing with Booksurge for the 1st time. I've published with conventional publishers up to now, so this is a new venture and I'm apprehensive but hopeful. Your comment was helpful I also work with Allison, but she turned me over to another team. Is your book selling well with Booksurge. I have 2 books listed already on amazon and despite rave reviews, sales are poor (the publisher put a ridculously high price on it and did a terrible job on printing it, including leaving out the index.) Do you think if I ask Goodreads members to put tags on the 2007 book, Amazon would position it better? I'll send you the info if you would be willing to tag it. I'll tag yours too, so send me its title and an idea of what it's about. If I put it on my Wish List and someone gives it to me for Chrismukah, I will review it for you, too -- but only a positive review. If I don't like it, I will still tag it, but I won't review it. It's got to be a 4 or 5 star book for me to review it.

Marcia Basichis (marciab) | 2 comments We used Book Surge to do the printing of the new Minstrel's Alley book, "The Guys Who Spied for China."
I would recommend them. They were helpful, professional and the end product was quite wonderful.

I agree, Booksurge takes the hassle out of getting your books published and the associates are very competent. The system thorough and complete as you can tell from the books that get to market for you. They don't write the books for you, they don't correct them, what they do is produce, publish and promote. My contact person is Allison Brown and I recommend her as well. This is in no way to take credit away from any associate, I am sure those who work there know what they are doing and will do what is needed to get you a well produced book to market.

Sandy (sandynathan) | 22 comments This post is not exactly on tagging your book, but definitely on marketing books in the Great Recession. I just posted an article on my Blog, Your Shelf Life featuring super seller Dennis Batchelder. Dennis is the author of two top selling books and a living sales machine. He's sold 16,000 of his first book since last spring … Take a gander at the article.

Todd––I'd love to see your tagging site written up like that. I can do it in the coming year … interested ???

Elaine wrote: "I just clicked on the tags that were there. I didn't add any new ones, and fortunately didn't see the word "idiot." Actually, are you aware nobody can see inside your book?"

The "Look Inside" feature is a matter of a contract between a publisher and Amazon. As part of the contract, Amazon scans every page of a print book.

This could in theory result in the unintended creation of an e-book in the system. It's also a bit of a grey area if the publisher does not own all the rights.

At one time, there were rumored abuses of the Look Inside feature (which I am sure have been taken care of). I heard that a determined reader could search for a word such as "and" and have a very good chance of reading the entire book while "Looking Inside" it.

message 1272: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (httpgoodreadscomelaine_chaika) | 48 comments It's a real Catch-22: people are often afraid to buy if they can't look at a writing sample or two. Someone can abuse anything, I suppose. I know i am more likely to buy if I look inside and am grabbed by the writing itself. I usually look at the first page and a "surprise me" excerpt. For nonfiction, I look at the copyright date to make sure it is up-to-date on certain topics.

Well!

I see that Amazon has removed sample chapters from under Editorial Reviews. Once upon a time, authors were able to add their first chapters there.

There is always the Blog. I don't think there is anything to stop an author who doesn't have "look inside" from posting an excerpt on their Amazon blog.

Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

Rowena (rowenacherry) | 334 comments Mod
There's an easier way to remove cruel and spiteful tags such as "idiot" or "spammer" or "fake" which some of our group have encountered.

Again, I trust that Todd's followers will only use this information to support one another.

To the right of the tags other people have added is a text link "Agree With These Tags" and you can either vote up or down.

That's a far quicker way to get rid of unwanted personal attacks.

Best wishes,
Rowena Cherry

For us to tag you on Amazon, you have to provide your Amazon URL so people can go directly to it on Amazon. My book is at
http://bit.ly/LgSoci
I'd appreciate tags like "language, linguistics, sociolinguistics, sociology of language" and any others you may find appropriate if you look into the TOC on the site. I have another book on that page as well, which you can also tag with "therapy," plus "linguistics," etc. I'l tag yours as soon as I get your book's URL

Hi Alice,
As far as I am aware you can't add anything on to the list that is there, as they had a deadline to follow in getting the Christmas books up. But the site continues to show reviews from month to month, I believe. You could always check with the moderator Ruth Douliette -- If you would like to do one for Ferryman, I'd be delighted. Every little mention helps (providing it is not a terrible one :) I'd rather none that that!
BA looks good on there, doesn't it. The cover is so clear. My reward, apart from your thanks, :) was they did a little blurb about the reviewers - which advertised my web page. BTW are you on Twitter?

Peggy Williams (peggywilliams) | 5 comments Elaine, Message # 1316 As I understand it this is only the discussion page. You have to submit your book info & links in the "Submit Your Book" Section for your book to get on the official tagging list for people to find your Amazon url. To get to the correct page to click on "Submit Your Book" go to page one of this discussion section and click on Todd's link in his first message. That will take you where you need to go to submit your book for tagging. Thanks for your concern for me, but didn't want your book not to get submitted. Peggy

message 1294: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (httpgoodreadscomelaine_chaika) | 48 comments I did submit my book on the Submit Your Book section and I have not gotten many tags, but my mailbox is crammed with email messages from that site with requests to tag others' books. Unfortunately, one can't click on the books' URL's from an email. I have about 12 requests in my mailbox today alone.

Elaine,

I'm sure you know that the more similar groups you belong to for tagging purposes, the more likely it is that someone will accidentally remove their original tag... because tagging a second time undoes a pre-existing tag.

People who are not in a hurry generally notice a brown check mark in a box beside a tagged word. If the check mark is there, it means that they have already tagged the book.

If you see your tag rank going down instead of up, you will know that this is happening.
