How to hit #1 on Amazon...

I agree with you on the tag choices. There are some tags that I just do not want associated with my account. For those books, I usually insert my own tag, or pick through the tags.
More often...on most books, I end up tagging all the tags that are listed under the book, not just the three tags that the author recommend. After all, it is just as easy to click on all the tags, as it is to click on three :]
I think the real problem is that a select few authors just want to get tagged and do not spend the time to tag anyone back.
However, it is still a most wonderful program, and being part of the tag-team has put my novel on the top of the Amazon search list. Wooo Whoo :]

I can comisserate with all those who diligently tag other author's books without much return. I think Becoming Alice has had on return tag for every twenty I have tagged. However, even those few tags have put me on the first page of some of my listed tags. And, what I have enjoyed especially are those who have tagged all and not just my three tags and have even added tags that haveturned out to be helpful. So, let's just swallow it and keep on tagging.

I'm half way through your book - great read so far! Very nice work.

Thanks, Todd. I'm so glad you like it.

I just finished your memoir - fascinating. The epilogue was very moving.
I'll try to get a review written this week. Thank you so much for sharing such a special part of your life with all of us.
Todd

Not true, Elizabeth. I tagged your book for you two days ago after you posted your request in the Book Review section. At the time, you had seven tags for some of your requested words.
If you go to your own book's page on Amazon, you can see numbers in parentheses which tell you how many people have tagged each word.
Now, if you go back today and find that you only have three, that means that some people may have tagged your book a second time, and thereby reversed their original tag.
Also, it is possible that you have an enemy in the education/teaching community who has been busily untagging you when asked if your book "belongs" in the education/teaching community.
I have never sabotaged anyone's ranking in any community (I hasten to point out), but it appears to be possible to sabotage a rival's tags from within a community.

Elizabeth, you have 9 votes for your top tags.
You rank fourth in the Teachers community, which means your cover shows when anyone goes to the teaching community. 229 people have tagged "Teaching".
The top rated book is by Stephanie Meyers.
You will see the voting button I mentioned earlier. Maybe you can ask a few friends to "agree" that your book belongs in Teaching.
I suggest that in addition to tagging, you create a Listmania related to your subject matter (it seldom hurts to help other authors in your own genre), thus setting yourself up as an expert.

The tags that are lacking for "Rhinos" are rhino, elephant, love story, Kenya, Rwanda, Mombasa, Mt. Kenya, vet, doctor, medicine
Hey, Dr.
If there is a check mark (usually brown) beside your tags, it means that you are logged in (which is a very important thing to do before tagging anyone's words) and that you have already tagged those words for your own book.
Try tagging one with a check mark. The check mark will disappear. Behold. You have just removed your tag. Tag it again, and the brown tick will reappear.
As an amazon author, you are allowed to create 15 tags for your own books. Do so. If you don't tag your own books, don't expect anyone else to do so.

I'll be adding the rest of the books.
I'm also likely to add an "opt in" mailing list. I used to send out a newsletter to remind folks to tag - But there are so many authors now my mail service will only allow me to send out 100 emails per hour.
Hence, sending out a newsletter takes all day! So, I'm considering a service which folks can then sign-up to receive the newsletter and I can send out 1000 emails at once (that's the free version - may need to upgrade).
Stay tuned all!

Just posted a review of "Becoming Alice" - great Memoir - check it out:

Rowena Cherry sent me this way. I belong to IWOFA and I try to be a good Amazon tagger. lol.

Let me know what stuff I need to do! I tend to be clueless. :P

The second printing (new publisher!) for my book "The Time Cavern" just came out. I'm essentially starting all over with tags!
This version of the book is much cleaner (new cover, new layout, teaser chapter for the next book at the end, etc.) and I'm trying to get buyers to this Amazon page.
I also now have no reviews (they didn't carry over from the other book).
So if you've read the book and reviewed it - I'd greatly appreciate copying your review to the new page and if you haven't review I'd love some tags.
Follow the link here to the new version - thanks all!

The Malia and Teacup books are wholesome and funny. Both books in the series have received great reviews and have just been included with the Sunshine State Young Readers book box as a potential nominee for the 2010 Florida state reading program.

Thank you.

Maybe the issue is not entirely that some authors aren't playing fair. Maybe the problem is some of the tag choices we're offered.
Right from the start, Todd said that we did not have to tag tags that made us uncomfortable. Some authors choose three equally specific tags.
I would be perfectly happy to write in a specially chosen default tag to indicate that I'd been... such as "recommended" ?
