Gina (grcollia) I'm very pleased to say that Amazon removed the review the moment they got the report... super quick time! I was worried because I've had a fair bit of difficulty resolving issues over the past few months, but they sorted this out right away, thank goodness. :o)

message 702: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 460 comments That had to be hard on you Gina, especially since it was a 5 star review, sigh.

message 703: by Gina (new)

Gina (grcollia) Dee, I am telling myself that I will have so many five star reviews coming out of my ears six months from now that I won't miss this one ;o)

I've never seen anyone write the plot of a book in a review like that before... it left me a bit boggle-eyed.

message 704: by Thersa (new)

Thersa I've seen it before and it baffles me, too. It seems like the reviewer thinks their job is to tell you exactly what the book is about. I called it the Wikipedia Complex. Glad that Amazon fixed the problem though. It's a shame they couldn't keep the stars though.

Hi Vincent, Maggie et al --- I seem to have missed out this Listmania 'yes' voting. Can somebody put me in the picture, please, on how to do this? A while back, as well as the normal tagging, I taggged a whole load of authors and books in a Lismania style --- ie adding their books to the lists of others --- is this what you are currently talking about? Is is still ongoing? I don't seem to have seen it lately. (I get lost very easily on this program!)

Now, I will go in and have a look at your link to the profile page, Vincent and see if that explains anything for me.

Sandy (sandynathan) | 22 comments Greetings, everyone! Here's a news flash from my neck of the woods: My book NUMENON IS #9 IN RELIGIOUS FICTION, #1 IN MYSTICISM in two categories of Religion & Spirituality on the Kindle store.

I priced it at 99 cents! Gasped as I did it, but it worked. Here's a link:
http://tinyurl.com/Numenon-Kindle

This is fun! Would appreciate your passing the URL to anyone with a Kindle.

Bunch of new articles on http://yourshelflife.com

All the best to you,

Sandy (sandynathan) | 22 comments Hi, everyone! Just heard about a new writing contest, http://emergingwriterawards.org/ from my friend Ellen Reid. This is a contest for MANUSCRIPTS. All the details are on the website. Entries don't close until Aug. 31st. Prizes are cash: A grand prize of $2000 for a book length manuscript and $1000 for a shorter piece. They clarified the details. Authors can be published before entering this contest any way at all––but the contest is for unpublished works. Lots of categories. I'm polishing up my words!

Sandy

message 729: by Carole (new)

Carole (casutton) | 223 comments Hi Sandy,
That sounds interesting -- I have one down the pipeline I could send them. BTW the entry deadline is not clear. In the rules, at one time they mention Aug.31 and another time state June 30 -- so might want to watch that.
Thanks for the post,
Carole

Thanks for the post,

You are a wise an observant person to catch this mistake. I am sure you have seen many such offers for book contests. The prizes are small, the entry fee large, say $40 to $75 (I have seen higher) and no one knows the total entry number, but it is a money maker for the contest owner. With the advent of worldwide Internet activity, these contests can draw 100,000 or more entries. Draw a few submitted manuscripts out of each category, review, select, pay the prizes and bank a lot of money. Keep in mind, I am not talking about all, but this is a play on the original Australian scheme from back in the forties. You are my heroine, keep up the good work. thanks

Carole (casutton) | 223 comments To Sandy and Dr

Well, that's put the cat among the pigeons, hasn't it?
Do you have an opinion about this Sandy?
The June 30 deadline appears in rule 9 on the rule list, which directly contradicts the opening statement where it says August 31 --

I have entered two of my novels in competitions one in the UK another in Australia, both were completely genuine, and my novels were each short listed in their respective competitions. The title of being shortlisted in pretigious competitions is a great draw. You can put it on your book cover and booksellers love it.

Dr | 134 comments I enjoy contests, lotteries, Las Vegas and many other ways to get ahead. It would be nice if everyone that pulled a handle or pushed a button in Reno would be a winner, but in these cases, most of us know what our changes are, and that is from slim to none. As s youngster, I used to beg my mom to buy a certain cereal because of the contest label imprinted on the box and every time I spent seven cents for postage (I am very old) and borrowed another envelop from my Mon, I was given a lecture about such things. Since my writing began over forty years ago, I too entered a few contest early on. I never won, I may not be as good as some, but one thing did come from it. I began being bombarded by offers to publish my book from all over the continent and all for a fee. Then I began to think things out. Contests, Hmmmm, the prize in Cracker Jacks, name this dog food, free cruise to the Bahamas, fly free, and on and on. you know as many as I do. Are these methods good, they certainly are for the one conducting them. I say good luck, keep up the good work and enjoy what you do. I suppose if you are a reputable publisher or agent and have so many manuscripts waiting to be evaluated, the best thing to do is have a contest to get a few more.

Maybe we could get some of those who run these contests to report here on Goodreads. I certainly would be interested.

message 738: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (mccallum) | 241 comments Hey Todd,

That is a certainty, from what I have heard and read Carole's 'book 'Ferryman' is a must read! My list is growing daily! Dee's & Gina's books should be on my doorstep.

Chrisy, huge congratulations from Stuart & everyone reading (down under)

message 739: by Carole (new)

Carole (casutton) | 223 comments Chrissy,
Congratulations on your new baby. You must be thrilled, but exhausted if I know anything about it. It puzzles me how new mothers whose creative instincts have been fulfilled by giving birth, can find the inspiration to write mere words on a page. This comes from a mother of three and a gran of six! Well done Chrissy. I wish you well with your baby. May we learn if it is a boy or girl?
Carole, another one from down-under :)

message 740: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 460 comments I loved Carole's Ferryman. The only part that I didn't like...was when it was finished. I wanted to read more, more, more :]

message 741: by Carole (new)

Carole (casutton) | 223 comments Oh, Dee -- you are so lovely!
You and everyone else who has had nice things to say about Ferryman.

Now, how can we turn kind words into firm orders? Anybody know? Think about it while I go and have a Twitter. :>)

message 744: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (mccallum) | 241 comments Carole,

Whenever you tweet about your book always mention the genre: 'Thriller' Then you will show up on the thriller searches each time you post. A buy now link wouldn't be a bad idea! There are currently only 50 books in the thriller category....start tweeting!

I agree with you Jaimey.... Chrisy, how do you find the time to type?

Cheerio, Stuart

message 745: by Carole (new)

Carole (casutton) | 223 comments Stuart,
I understand about the thriller bit, that's no problem. When you suggested I put in a 'buy me' link to Amazon, I got a bit lost.
Pardon my ignorance, but can you tell me how to do that, please?

message 746: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (mccallum) | 241 comments Carole,

Copy & paste the link on your Amazon book title page, viola - you have a 'buy me link.' Turn it into a tiny URL...by the way I had no idea what a tiny URL was until I heard it from you! Now I use them every day, thank you.

message 747: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 460 comments Oh Stuart,

What a great tip. I didn't realize that there was a twitter search section for novels. Way cool!
