The scientific method, developed by Something-or-Other Bacon, during the Enlightenment era, if I remember correctly. Anyways, you'll need this a lot.

1) Form a question

2) Gather information

3) Form a hypothesis

4) Test the hypothesis

5) Collect data

6) Make observations

7) Draw a conclusion

8) Communicate results
