April 28, 1992: Jim Gallien drove through Fairbanks and found a hitchhiker, went by the name of Alex. Alex wanted a ride to the forest because he wanted to make a living there. He had a backpack with him which only contained a .22 caliber rifle, a bag of rice, a map from a corner store and a few other small things. Gallien really tried to dissuade Alex because he thought it was too harsh to try to make a living in the wild in the heavy snow of Alaska. "Alex pulled a camera from his backpack and asked Gallien to snap a picture of him shouldering his rifle at the trailhead. Then, smiling broadly, he dissappeared down the snow-covered track......."
