Violetta | 477 comments I was attempting to find the correct series for the Conan (i.e. Conan of Cimmeria) books and found this list: http://www.goodreads.com/series/51066...
which, in my opinion, is rather messy. I was hoping someone with a little more time and experience could help me out with organizing it more cleanly.

Kim | 607 comments Have fun with that :P From what I've read even for people familiar with the work it's still very messy. Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conan_ch...

Violetta | 477 comments Yeah the different authors would make it...difficult, to say the least. I figure the way to do this is to have the main Conan the Barbarian storyline by Robert E. Howard be a list, then the Robert Jordan storyline as a separate list, the Cray as separate, etc. If the same book should be co-authored by any of the same people, I suppose then it would have to exist in both lists.

The wiki might be useful

vicki_girl | 2764 comments Yeah, I saw these awhile back and just didn't have time to commit to such a project.

I did create (or maybe just edited?) one series for the reprints of the Conan the Cimmerian stories by Robert E. Howard:

If someone were to take this on, I agree that smaller separate series should be created. The current all-encompassing series should be kept, but probably needs to be re-ordered by original publication year or some other logical arrangement.

ETA:
To make matters worse, I think some separating of editions is in order. This edition probably does not belong together with this edition

Yes Vicki I agree about publication year. It would probably be the easiest way to keep the compendious list. I think this weekend I'll devote some time to creating the small individual ones =)

Violetta | 477 comments Well I've thought about it all weekend, and I want to create separate series for Conan based on publishing house, and just rearrange the master "omnilist" chronologically. Thoughts?

ETA:
I added 7 books to the master list and reorganized by publication date.

Sandra | 31477 comments Unfortunately, you can't create a series solely based on publishing house. Once a series is created, all editions become part of the series not just some or one of them.

vicki_girl | 2764 comments I think Violetta means creating sub-series similar to what i linked in my message 4 above. Most of the Conan "series" are collections created by a particular publisher and have unique editions. The sub-series would be similar what what is given on the books page on Wikipedia.

For Conan, it's not the same sets of stories getting reprinted over and over again. Each publisher collects and divides them differently. You also have other series that separate from the REH canon written by other authors.

I think Violetta is simply talking about creating these series to make things a little tidier and easier for GR users.

I do want to ask though, Violetta, by "chronologically" do you mean internal chronology? As Kim linked above there is debate among Conan scholars as to what order the stories occur in. That's why I suggested publication order. I don't have a strong feeling either way, just curious. :)

Yes that's exactly what I meant with the sub-series :)
Basically I was thinking of doing something like "Conan the Barbarian (Conan, #1 (Gnome Press))" and so on.

Oh, and chronologically did refer to pub year. I spent about an hour on that yesterday so I hope I didn't mess it up.

On another note, I realized that there was a whole host of Conan comics from Dark Horse out there too, but when I checked the comic book database and the Dark Horse website, there was no clear order for those either! ARRGGHH! Long story short, I gave up (for now).
