Also, shebang etiquette demands that you do not sign up if you have doubt that you will be able to complete the project on time.
This is because
a)You have taken a spot that someone else might have wanted
b) The organizers often have a specific timetable they are working on.

We understand that sometimes you have to back out due to an emergency. Let the organizer know. That's preferable to just disappearing without a trace.
