Will (willbost) | 49 comments I really want to listen to Peter F. Hamilton's Nights Dawn Trilogy via audio (Audible preferred), but I can not find it anywhere! I want to give my money to Peter and his publisher, yet they will not take it. All my Google searches end up being torrents to download. Why must you (Peter and publisher) make me a pirate when I want to pay you legitimately?
I am praying my local library has the CDs???

Boots (rubberboots) | 499 comments I think most libraries have downloadable ebooks and audiobooks these days. You don't even have to go to the library anymore if you don't want to.

They do not have it. See my original post. I can not find it anywhere to buy.

Andrew (adrew) | 426 comments Will, who produces the P. F. Hamilton Nights Dawn audiobooks? I couldn't even find a version of say The Reality Dysfunction having been been produced. You sure one exists?

Tantor produces some of his works (eg. Void Trilogy) but not Nights Dawn Trilogy. http://www.tantor.com/AuthorDetail.as...

As much as I'd love it to be so not everything is also availabe as an audiobook. I'd be curious what you actually end up with, with said torrents.

EDIT: Goodreads seems to back this up. No audio version listed. http://www.goodreads.com/work/edition...

Tracey (stewartry) No audio versions of those books are listed on Worldcat either: http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=Pete...

The only way I can see there being an audio version is if there was an unofficial reading. Like a radio station or something? Truthfully though I think Will is out of luck.

The Library of Congress has its own audiobook service for the blind. They use 4-track cassettes that require special equipment to play, but someone has found a way to rip the tapes to MP3 because torrent sites are full of them. And yes, I can confirm that the Night's Dawn series is one of them, and it's just as overlong and boring in audio as print.

Boots (rubberboots) | 499 comments I looked it up on Overdrive, they only have the Void Trilogy and the Commonwealth Saga.

Michael (the_smoking_gnu) | 178 comments The version which is available "for free" on the internet is of extremely poor quality.
If you end up listening to this version you can still buy the paper version of the book and give money to Peter and his publisher that way.

It's the longest trilogy I've ever read, so it must have something going for it. I even think the beginning is more interesting than Pandora's Star. Plus it has a real nova at the end of the 2nd book, unlike Samuel Delany's Nova. I do remember skimming to the end of the 3rd book.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments I gave up after listening to The Reality Function for five hours and realizing I wasn't even 10% of the way done with just the first book.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Unfortunately, lack of availability doesn't override copyright law, unless you are looking at an educational use of material which might have fair use in your favor. And making a digital copy of something usually only applies if you owned it to begin with. I feel your pain. I hate not being able to get to something when I'm willing to pay for it, argh.

The Li..."

Ah. That makes sense then.

Poly (xenphilos) I have a similar problem with ebooks and DRM. Before, I used to buy Kindle books then I would pirate them because I want a DRM-free epub version. I now use a DRM stripper for Kindle books to remove the DRM and convert them into epub after I buy them because I want to own and control the ebooks forever. I'm glad that J.K. Rowling is making her books DRM free in many formats and adding a watermark since I'll never share my books online and it won't stop me from format-shifting.
